14/9/2013 Scottish League Premiership Match Day 6

    St Johnstone 1 v 2 Hibernian

    Heffernan
    Collins

Stevie May put Saints ahead with a drive from outside the box. Paul Heffernan equalised with his first goal for HIBS when the ball was whizzing around the Saints box like a pinball machine

James Collins grabbed the winner on the hour

14/9/1977 Anglo Scottish Cup Quarter Final 1st Leg

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Blackburn Rovers

    McKay

Hibs dominated this tie and we should have had more to show for our efforts than goals from Jim McKay and Ally MacLeod. A late strike by Noel Brotherston gave Blackburn hope going into the second leg

    14/9/1955 European Champions Cup

    Rot Weiss Essen 0 v 4 Hibernian

    Turnbull 2
    Reilly
    Ormond

Two goal Eddie Turnbull was the hero in HIBS’ victory over German Champions Rot-Weiss Essen.

Turnbull scored two goals and had a hand in a third.

The game was played in heavy rain which turned the pitch into a quagmire but the conditions didn’t worry HIBS. They were always on top and only poor finishing stopped them from piling on the goals Rot-Weiss were rarely seen in attack

Hibs opened the scoring on the 35th minute when Turnbull beat Fritz Herkenrath -the German international goalkeeper -with a low shot. Just before this Herkenrath had knuckled a hard shot from Willie Ormond over the bar

Rot-Weiss had a chance to equalise but outside right Roehrig shot wide. Ten minutes later Turnbull scored with a fine solo effort when he beat several defenders to notch his and Hibs’ second

Turnbull had a hand in HIBS’ third 11 minutes after the interval when he laid the ball on a plate for Lawrie Reilly to score from close range

Willie Ormond added a fourth in the 82nd minute

Gordon Smith added a fifth on the final whistle but this was disallowed the Referee saying he had already blown for full time

Eddie Turnbull became the first British player to score in European competition

That Saints game in 2013 - I came away from that thinking Heffernan and Collins looked like they were going to be a decent partnership.
    Shows what I know 🙁

I'm fairly sure they rarely played together, for whatever reason. Good win that was, their first home loss in a long time iirc.

Heffernan was excellent that day. But despite his goal, I thought Collins was poor. A sign of things to come (minus the goals).

I think that was the season when I finally realised that we were going down the pan. Murray, Muir and Scott (and Fyfe probably on the bench) instead of the likes of Edwards, Cropley, Gordon & O'Rourke. The Tornadoes would have taken 5 off that lot no probs. Our last home game that season attracted a crowd of only 3,457.

    Hibernian 6 v 0 Malmo

    Blair
    McBride 3
    Duncan 2

Malmo were starting to establish a European pedigree as recently as 1968 having beaten AC Milan 2- 1 and were flying in their own domestic league

Hibs of course had a European pedigree of their own and seemed too eager to please their fans only scoring the two goals in a sluggish first half- the first from Jim Blair - his first goal for HIBS -when a Jim Black shot cannoned off Joe McBride in a crowded penalty area and he was handily placed to smash the ball home The second two minutes later when a deflected Arthur Duncan shot fell to Joe McBride on the goal line and he doesn’t miss those

The second half was only minutes old when McBride was upended in the box - play on -Cropley went close with an effort and Duncan knocked one just wide

Hibs then scored three goals in 5 minutes the first a Joe McBride header from a Duncan cross to make him HIBS’ all time record scorer in Europe. McBride completed his hat-trick when in typical style he wheeled on the edge of the box and sent a thundering shot past the bewildered goalkeeper Four minutes later Duncan rose to a McBride cross and headed the ball away from the Swedish keeper. Duncan added a sixth 15 minutes from the end when he smashed home a right foot shot

Hibs blew Malmo away with a display of devastating exciting attacking football and it is worth noting that up until this point Joe McBride had scored 59 goals in 85 appearances - no wonder he was such a hero to the HIBS fans who had forgotten all about Colin Stein

17/9/2006 Scottish League SPL Match Day 7

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Rangers

    Killen 2

Chris Killen gave HIBS the lead when his fine header from a Michael Stewart free kick looped over Alan McGregor and landed in the net. Killen then had McGregor stretching at another headed attempt and Rob Jones could only stab the rebound wide of the post

The match was getting heated and Rangers were under severe pressure. Karl Svensson booted one off the line and Steven Smith, Barry Ferguson and Phil Bardsley were all added to the Referee’s wee black book

Rangers pulled one back in 64 minutes when Sebo scored his first Rangers goal with a powerful header from a Chris Burke cross but Killen punished Rangers again when unmarked his bullet header flew past McGregor from a Steven Whittaker cross

To cap his afternoon Killen, who had been booked for removing his top at the goal celebration received a second Booking from John Underhill after getting involved in a scuffle with Rodrigeuz

Bardsley was also dismissed near the end for a second Booking for dissent at a corner

    17/9/1975 UEFA Cup Round 1 Leg 1

    Hibernian 1 v 0 Liverpool

    Harper

Hibs totally dominated this match played in monsoon conditions

Hibs took the lead on 19 minutes when Iain Munro collected a short throw from Jim McArthur. The HIBS midfield man looked for a way to send the speedy Arthur Duncan flying down the left flank. He struck his pass perfectly although HIBS did get a break when the ball skidded off the sodden turf under the foot of Phil Neal. Dangerman Duncan was on to it in a flash he hit the ball hard and low across goal and there was Joe Harper racing in at the far post to give English international goalkeeper Ray Clemence no chance.

That was the end of the scoring although Liverpool had a goal chalked off in the 57th minute

Liverpool stepped up the ante in the second half though HIBS were always dangerous on the counterattack indeed John Brownlie should have increased HIBS’ lead from the penalty spot when Arthur Duncan was hauled down in the Liverpool box by Lawler and Neal during one such attack but Clemence made a brilliant save diving to his right

    Dunfermline 5 v 6 Hibernian

    McGraw 2
    Scott 2
    Cormack
    Stevenson

HIBS had defeated Hearts 3-1 at Easter Road and confidently ventured across the Forth to face Dunfermline. HIBS raced into an early lead and indeed were leading 4-0 with only 20 minutes to go thanks to goals from Cormack Scott Stevenson and McGraw.

The home side managed to pull one back and there still seemed to be no cause for alarm when Delaney pulled back a second. Alarm bells started to ring when Dunfermline scored a third but McGraw underlined our superiority when he scored a fifth. Robertson scored a fourth for Dunfermline and that man Sir Alex Ferguson equalised to send the Dunfermline fans into raptures of delight

Dunfermline appeared to have scored again but John McNamee cleared the ball from under the crossbar- many thought the ball had crossed the line-the ball was swept up the wing to McGraw with the Referee about to blow for full time- McGraw was fouled but took a quickly taken free kick to Jim Scott in the box- his first shot was saved by the goalkeeper but his follow up attempt just trickled over the line to the delight of all the Hibees massed behind the Dunfermline goal

    On this day in history

What a good player Killen was for us in his short time with us ...another who slipped away across the M8 without getting too much game time. Will have made good money in his career, but not played as many games as he would have liked .

Someone question on another thread on Stephen McGinn, whether 350 first team games was much to shout about for a 31 year old ..It looks like Killen ended his career with less than 160 first team games played . Shame.

Ps. Always felt a bit aggrieved that he convalesced a big injury with us, then when fit popped off to Celtic ..that’s football I guess ...

The Tornadoes were starting to take shape but found themselves two goals down at half-time thanks to goals from Ian Mitchell and Pat Gardner

Time for one of Eddie Turnbull’s famous half-time pep talks and HIBS came out of the traps flying scoring four goals past Hamish McAlpine in a devastating 18 minute spell

Hibs added a fifth goal late on leaving the United players and their supporters shell shocked at the full time whistle

20/9/1967 Inter Cities Fairs Cup Round 1 Leg 1

    Hibernian 3 v 0 Porto

    Cormack 2
    Stevenson

Another great European night under the lights and HIBS pulled off a major coup by giving a debut to new signing ex Rangers and 1966 Everton FA Cup winner Alex Scott brother of HIBS hero Jim Scott

The Portuguese could not handle his pace and he continually ripped them apart down the right wing. We also had the ball wizardy and trickery of Eric Stevenson over on the left wing

Alex Scott only lasted 60 minutes but what an impact he made giving our forward line a new dimension

HIBS started at 100 miles per hour the Portuguese having to clear the ball off their goal line on no less than three occasions

Scott and Stevenson were repeatedly cutting through either flank and hitting the byline with ease

Hibs took the lead on 25 minutes with Valdemar once again fouling Stevenson and going into the Referees book for his trouble. Pat Quinn took a quick free kick looked up and placed it perfectly for Peter Cormack to head it high into the net with one of his trademark spring like leaps to set Easter Road alight

Ten minutes from the interval the fans were roaring again Alex Scott sent Cormack through on goal one on one with the goalkeeper with a defence splitting pass - Cormack coolly rolled the ball into the empty net beyond the advancing Portuguese keeper

Hibs completed the scoring two minutes after the interval when Quinn took one of his free kick specials out near the corner flag Colin Stein met it with a glancing header teeing it up nicely for the inrushing Stevenson who slammed it home

After 60 minutes Alex Scott left the field of play to be replaced by Colin Grant to a standing ovation

Bobby Parker scored a late penalty for Hearts when remarkably Tommy Younger had the ball firmly in his grasp with both hands Hearts forward Durkin tried to shoulder charge Younger over the goal line so Younger shoved him back and Referee Jack Mowatt awarded a penalty kick
