The SNP will never allow drinking at the football.
They've still point blank refused to reinstate in on the trains despite numerous requests from Scotrail.

The alcohol ban is ignored by Scotrail staff. Was drinking on the train last week to Aberdeen. None of the staff care.

Good revenue for the club. Personally, I'd swerve the chance to queue up for lager in plastic and wait till after the game for a decent pint.

I see in England MPs are urging a rethink to allow fans to drink in the stands now. When will the Scottish authorities drag us out of the dark ages and allow booze in football stadiums? Would make a massive difference to the match day experience and be massive for revenue across Scotland’s football clubs. Has to happen.
I posted when this thread came out that Government and Police Scotland were open to considering removing the ban, and that there might be a good chance of it happening. I have to say I think the opposite now in terms of it happening.

SFA and SPFL commissioned a "Football and Alcohol Scoping Study" research report from Stirling Uni - the way that report (published in March) was written has virtually killed it dead. Despite the findings being mixed in terms of for and against, the conclusions and headlines were heavily biased against the idea of Alcohol being introduced. Its almost like it was written by someone from Alcohol Focus Scotland. If the footballing authorities were serious about bringing alcohol back to stadia then that report was a huge own goal, as the headlines generated will make it very difficult for change.

    https://www.stir.ac.uk/media/stirlin...fing-paper.pdf

Reports like that can often be swayed one way or another. The two authors of the research are from the social marketing and health institute at the University and a fair number of participants in the study were NHS professionals or football safety officers. Whilst there was club hospitality and CEO involvement, it doesn't appear their views were strong enough to make a positive case for change here, certainly not in the minds of the health institute researchers.

    It's not the staff's fault.

If they ignore people drinking and there's bother they will be in trouble themselves.

About time. Now allow us to have a drink in the concourse if we choose.

They're just scrapping the current ban, which was unworkable and should have been consigned to the bin after Covid. Assume they'll just ban drinking on certain trains ad-hoc, as they'd done for years, previously.

Precisely 66 fans (not one more! ) will be allowed to drink a maximum of five pints (!).

The question is: are five pints enough to get you through an Ayr Utd match?

Imagine needing 5 pints to go to a football game
If I could ever manage that many, and I doubt I could, I’d fall asleep

I guess it's not a question of 'needing' 5 pints but that trial hardly encourages moderate drinking. People will have paid their money and see having 5 pints as a question of getting their moneysworth as it is effectively paid for in the ticket price.

I'm not opposed to drinking at football but also don't feel the need. I'd be spending more time in the loos than watching the game if I had anything like 5 pints.

The crazy thing is the way I read the statement by Ayr is that the ticket price of £35 includes the 5 pints so there’s an incentive to down the Moretti to get your money’s worth! Absolutely bizarre. Nobody would drink in the concourse like that if it was normalised.

Is this not just a very slight variation on what hospitality is now? Pay extra for a ticket and you can booze in the stadium, pay the standard rate and you can't?

I done the Terrace Experience last year and was able to drink before the game and at HT, had direct access to my seat from the lounge and couldn't view the pitch while drinking. I'm not really sure how this differs.

It is illegal and it's their job, shame on the SNP but not a slight in any way at all on the train staff, good on them actually for doing their jobs. Not their fault their job involves enforcing a stupid rule

You cant drink on a plane unless they serve you, and you cant get off
You can’t drink on a bus either. I like a drink like anyone else, but surely when you are on public transport you can abide by the rules

Exactly how I read it. Hard to believe they've had 45 years to think about it and this is what they've come up with.

Big fan of beer free apart from hospitality, would never have held this opinion 5-10 years ago. One big put off for me is beer in plastic cups…..it’s just no the same. Also took in an EPL game and the concourses and toilets were awash with stale beer, made me appreciate a clean non alcoholic football experience. I have no issues taking in the game without a pint. Happily bevy before and after and enjoy the game free from it. Used to think it was such a silly rule, but I’m sure those who need that fix have a hip flask or two 😉

But you can drink on trains in Scotland, apart from Scotrail.

I have drunk wine and beer on LNER and TPExpress trains in Scotland.

Talk about making a dug's dinner of something. If that's the "test event" I can't imagine the idea going much further, not that it bothers me either way as drinking in the concrete bowels of a stadium isn't for me.

Imagine a similar setup at any SPL game, let alone a big one 😅😅

Not sure why we have to make it so complicated.

Set up a bar selling pints in a plastic tumbler and see how we get on.
