Let’s be honest, at peak times you are never going to hit 40mph on roads like Queensferry road or Glasgow road or most of the main roads going in and out of Edinburgh, apart from night time they are normally at snails pace, came along Queensferry road about 3 the other day and it was heaving, what I did notice is all the signs have been removed about this new campaign and wonder if it was due to B7 vandalising them all.

Agreed, about the peak time speed non-issue.

Maybe we could try....variable speed limits. That said, there's loads of roads in Edinburgh that used to be 40mph and now seem pretty ridic. Telford Rd, Bits of Ferry Road, all the big roads leading out the city. The West Approach Road was national speed limit (maybe).

90% of drivers don't look at the signs that tells them when they can use bus lanes, they'll never take in variable speeds.

The zones were brought in for older diesel cars/vans/taxis, all taxis are Euro 6 and the majority of people just upgraded to Euro 6, so traffic us still a nightmare in Edinburgh, add in the council's thing with temporary lights.

Within 10 years it will be electric only if cars are allowed at all.

Tbf about 99.9% of drivers in Edinburgh seem to think that is the case anyway so shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience to them.

I'll miss the dirty looks I get for knowing how to use bus lanes properly though

I suppose the issue in Edinburgh is that the public transport isn't really in place yet. Far too much pissing about with the trams, consulting everyone and their dog for years on end. You are never going to please everyone so either get a proper network built or drop it altogether and move on. Also no real urban rail network worth the name. If that doesn't keep pace with the drive to a car free centre then it's doomed to fail, people want convenience and you need to reach a point where not using public transport or walking is cutting off your nose to spite your face. Personally I never use the car to go into town now; I have Brunstane Station almost on my doorstep and can be in town in 7 minutes from there. The thought of trying to drive through any city centre seems faintly ridiculous to me now but I accept I'm still in a minority there.

that would mirror most of my thoughts. I drive everywhere but also realise that we should be moving away from that model now. The issue is that not driving is much more expensive or far mor time consuming. If the cars were gone then all that changes as buses would be quicker and cycling so much safer. I used to love cycling to work but a house move meant the route changed and it just felt too dangerous particularly in the darker months. I'd love to see electric bikes being embraced. They can be a bit of a menace when mixed with cars and not policed in pedestrian areas but they could easily solve the time issue and if lots of folk used them the public transport would be easier to sort. At the moment it feels like it is all penalising drivers but not really giving them proper alternatives. If only we had used the Tram money for far more worthwhile infrastructure and even cheaper buses than now. That could have changed everything but we went for a system that has really made the city ugly and isn't much faster than buses anyway
