It wasn't actually the BBC that wrote that bit as it came direct from the research, but let's not let that get in the way of a bit of outrage!

Who's outraged?

The ridiculous statement was due to be read on the BBC and the presenter declined to do so. Who cares where it came from, it was about to be broadcast on BBC national news.

Obviously this on-the-fly edit of the teleprompter has created a lot of social media discussion as well as a lot of click-bait articles.
Two things I've seen written by others over the last two days, generally, girls under 18 aren't classed as women.
Off course they are, but when stories or news is reported they are never classed as women.
Secondly, trans-males can be pregnant. That might conflict with some people.
Regardless, when J K Rowling wades in you know there's gonna be a pile on somewhere.
At least the presenter involved has made light of it and welcomed all her new followers!

Trans men are biological women though. Only a woman can be pregnant. That the whole 'people who menstruate', 'birthing parent' etc guff ever got adopted as terminology was absurd.

I would refer to them as pregnant person if they wanted, but I wouldn't change the language of public output for a minuscule percentage of pregnancies. I'd bet trans men wouldn't be arsed if a booklet said pregnant women, only a few right on ever offended would care

Bearing in mind that men don't have a cervix and account for around 50% of the 'people across the UK' does this mean a third of women or a sixth of women? In their desperation to avoid offending trans activists the Guardian excels at tying itself in knots.

Well JK Rowling, who sometimes identifies a man, has brought far more attention to the article because of the absurdity. So it's done some good, although there's always going to those with more interest in the absurdity than the content.

From what I've read he had an unhappy personal life as Robert Millar but as far as I'm aware he didn't subsequently take part in competitive women's cycling as a biological man. That would have been controversial.
