    Jacob Fearnley

    Hearts or Hibs?

JACOB FEARNLEY: I'm not really anything right now. I was Hibs. When I was younger, I used to go to the shop every weekend, just buy like some kind of memorabilia. When I went to the States, I kind of lost it a little bit.

So is this another one that’s going to be “British” when he wins and “Scottish” when he loses ?! 😅

Like when the Edinburgh Evening News continually bring up Louise Linton being from Dalkeith when she was actually brought up in Meville bloody Castle!!!!

Good player and still improving. Probably not quite going to get to Draper's level but it's heartening to see some genuine British tennis talent coming through post-Murray.

He's a good player but he's nowhere near Murrays level . I think we're going to wait a long time for the next Andy

I meant he is now the best Scottish tennis player
Fully realise he's not at Murray's level.

Having been a professional tennis coach I would say technically is as good if not better than Murray. Needs to build himself up a bit and develop his mental toughness and will to win. Sky's the limit for this Hibee.

Technically better than Murray? No chance. He’s 23 now too and miles off where Murray was at that age.

We are not talking about rankings but his shot technique. He has bigger shots off the ground and a good volleyer. His serve is better than Murray's - first serve is faster and second serve has more bite than Murray's.

Also he was playing US college tennis until 2024 and only been on the Professional tour for a year. His rise up the rankings has meteoric.

Bigger shots off the ground genuinely find that hard to believe clearly a very decent player though.

Pretty sure his mum is from Penicuik and went to Penicuik High School, which was certainly not salubrious.

It doesn't really matter where he went to school, in a physically demanding and solo sport like tennis he should get the support from all.

Personally I'd support any Brit playing tennis (just my tuppence-worth)....

He played college because that was the route his level dictated. I think Murray was approaching if not in the world top ten before he was 20? He was regularly playing and competing with the big 3 as they all progressed through the ranks.

Murray’s shot making was incredible. At his height his first serve was up there and his second was usually pretty consistent. He had in game intelligence that is part of being a technical player. No point having one or two shots that might be technically good but you can’t put it all together. As you’ll know serve speed isn’t everything. Murray was brilliant at knowing where and when to position.

As we know Murray’s physical and mental strength were better than most. Not many shots were not chased down.

If this guy is going to get close he has an awful lot to do in a short space of time. Rising through the rankings is one thing. The way the points work sustaining it is quite another.

Would be nice if he could but I think saying he is equal or better than Murray in any aspect of his game is very wide of the mark at this time. When he’s making these shots regularly against 3 or 4 of the best players ever to play tennis then maybe we can compare.

Went to see Andy Murray at playhouse last night, he said at 14 he was ranked 2nd in Europe. He’d also won the US junior open at age 17/18

He decided on the college route because of studies and wanted to mature slowly. Getting into the top 50 within a year of going on the pro tour is pretty incredible.

Murray was a counter puncher. Get the ball back and defend. Wait for your opportunity.Jacob is all out attack and takes the game to his opponents because he has a bigger arsenal than Murray.

Yes was playing a huge server today. You have to hold in these situations because you will on get one or two bites of the cherry and against a big server. The shortened take up favoured by many pros now can lead to less rythem and fluency on serving. Maybe should favour a fuller take back of the racket, so serve is more natural, lose some power but gain some more consistency.

Me too. Very excited to see what Jack Draper can achieve. All the younger Brits cite Murray as their inspiration though.
