    Hun's, sell the family silver!

An authentic piece of silverware that marked Rangers' ninth consecutive title victory in the 1990s has sold at auction for £20,600 to an unknown buyer.

The Bell's Whisky League Championship Trophy from the 1996-1997 season went under the hammer on Thursday at Glasgow-based McTear's, with bidding starting at £9,000.

The Ibrox-side lifted the trophy at Tannadice on 7 May 1997, after a header from Danish forward Brian Laudrup in the 10th minute sealed a 1-0 victory over Dundee United.

The result secured Walter Smith's team a ninth Scottish Premier League title in a row, equalling the feat achieved by Celtic from 1965 to 1974.

The trophy was presented to Rangers captain Richard Gough on the pitch after the match, while images from the night show star players like Ally McCoist and Paul Gascoigne celebrating with the trophy on the pitch.

Wonder who was selling it and how they got their hands on it. Won’t have been the club selling that

Yes sounds a very odd thing to go to auction.

So was this a separate trophy given to them as well as the actual league trophy (which is now given to the winners of the championship)? Is that normal or was it a special one to mark the 9 in a row achievement?

Not sure, but I always thought the way trophies worked were there was 1 official trophy and each winner got a replica for that year. So I would think this is the official replica... I'm surprised it wasn't within Rangers possession- in fact, unless they sold it previously I would imagine they'd have a legal claim to it (maybe not now they're sevco right enough...) equally, Id expect that the winning bidder would be Rangers or some sort of associated historical trust.
    Mon the Hibs.

It's not a replica, it's the thing they're holding down low here:

Probably dismissed as a bit of sponsor's tat.

You'd think for such a low cost that Sevco themselves would have bought it. What a strange organization they are.

Yes, guessing it was given away to a fan or a charity auction with the club not really seeing it as being of value.

I remember Hibs got presented with two trophies in 1991, the Skol Cup and the League Cup.

....or they lost ownership when they went out the box/died/were liquidated.

Nothing belonged to Rangers any more as there was no Rangers and The Rangers hadn't come into being.

Rangers owned shares in Arsenal through some kind of old historical twist. They lost those too.

The League Championship Trophy was the prize. The thing that was sold was a bit of junk.

Disagree, it was presented at the same time and as such is a piece of their history. Bizarre to me that Sevco didnt buy it at the auction.

Someone else mentioned the trophy that Skol provided along with the League Cup. The League Cup is iconic and is the true prize - maroon teams excepted. The Skol trophy was also a bit of meaningless junk. It really is stretching things a bit to call it “family silver”. In my opinion at least.
