Anything you like. Can be classic, soundtrack, anything you fancy but would like some context as to why.
Gortoz A Run from Blackhawk Down is CHILLING.
My grandad passed away in April, and Honour, from the miniseries The Pacific was a tune he loved.
Ludivico Einudi tracks can mostly be heard on adverts but wow, some
beautiful music to be heard there and I used to take my son for early morning buggy walks to some of his tunes.

Back in the day when I used to frequent the old Filmhouse and the Cameo I remember very much enjoying Kieslowski's Three Colours trilogy. Three Colours Red in particular had a soundtrack I used to listen to a lot. Must still have the CD somewhere!

One of my all time favourite tracks is Portion for Foxes by Rilo kiley.

Hand in Glove by The Smiths is my favourite song. I also have a lot of love for Live Forever by Oasis, Fools Gold by The Stone Roses and to be a bit out of my usual preferred genre of music, Self Esteem by The Offspring. Obviously sunshine on leith too.

One of the greatest things I've ever seen on TV is the London 2012 opening ceremony.
Underworld did some of the music for it and every now and again I like to lose myself in youtube listening to it.

I never got into classical pieces in the “conventional” fashion: it was soundtracks etc that got me into the more traditional stuff. My gateway was probably Gabriel Faure’s “Pavane” - a traditional piece but it was because it was used in the FIFA 98 World Cup coverage that i discovered it.
Some personal favourites include:
John Williams - Jurassic Park Theme
Hans Zimmer - Interstellar Theme
Howard Shore - honestly, anything from the LOTR OST
Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings
Gustav Holst - the Planets suite (I can’t pick one piece)
I like dark, melancholy pieces with lots of string elements. It's hard to stitch my own back with these shaky hands
But even harder to accept the scars you left were planned

John Williams is an incredible creator of music, I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves (which is not to say he doesn’t get a lot as it is), a modern genius

Any and every piece by Gerry Rafferty. The most brilliant Scottish singer/ songwriter in history. I don’t think he ever produced a dud.

Favourites vary from time to time for me, but for now I'm listening to Karl Jenkins' Benedictus from The Armed Man.
More perennial for me is Clint Mansell's Lux Aeterna - particularly this version - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZMuDbaXbC8
And thirdly, I'll be very disappointed in my family and friends if they don't have a piper playing The Dark Island at my funeral. I might even haunt them for the rest of their lives.

Joga by Björk is one that comes to mind, everything about it is absolutely beautiful and showcases what she’s about perfectly. A proper work of art.
I’m Jim Morrison I’m Dead by Mogwai as well, there are times I just see them as classical music with guitars. Supremely well paced and put together.
Do you think your security can keep you in purity, you will not shake us off above or below. Scottish friction, Scottish fiction

Think most music that hits you has a connection. Ludivico Einudi as you say or Adagio for strings are heard all the time but absolutely beautiful. Separate from songs with connections most of forever changes by love or Mcalmont and Butler

The Swan from Carnival of the Animals - beautiful piece of music.
Most of Rachmanninov's stuff. Probably spelt that wrong
Went to see RSNO playing Shostakovich 11 last week, the final movement of that had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up, amazing.
I could go on...
(Edit: If anyone likes a bit of Bill Bailey, his version of the swan hits the spot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJkhp7Cqe1g)Last edited by McSwanky; 13-06-2025 at 08:47 AM.
