    Thread now reopened.

Spending a Thursday morning from 7am reading through 7 pages and removing countless posts wasn't how I planned to start my day.

The point has been made before that members of the admin team aren't unfeeling robots, we all have our own thoughts on the situation in Gaza and Ukraine. However this part of the forum is a football board and much of the discussion had little to nothing to do with Hibs or football. To be really blunt we aren't here to police that and the many reported posts that go with it.

Apologies to anyone caught up in this who has had posts deleted because of something they quoted or that was borederline but we have bene fairly ruthless.

Please take the warnings on board and keep this thread to football. Thanks.

Looks like the teams involved are pretty much sorted on the wiki page except the Swiss entrants! Young Boys or Lugano, seems to depend on today’s Swiss cup final that doesn’t involve either of these clubs? Too complicated for me to work out!!

That’s what we want surely? No way we want to be playing Young Boys at this stage.

I was loathe to mention that Basel II beat them in the league. It sounds scarily similar to the "Celtic second string" argument! Still. Come on Basel!

Our luck is turning. Supporting hibs has become more stressful when we're NOT playing!

Hibs observer are saying that although they don’t regionalise the draw, they sort of informally do by splitting the draw into two sections and generally try to keep countries close to each other together. I can’t be others looking for the article but they suggested teams from Northern Europe would always get out in the same section as British teams. I’d guess from that there’s a higher chance we will get midgetland, Utrecht or Anderlecht than some of the other further afield sides?

Edit:- I think you’re missing a team from the seeded section? Should that be shakhtar donetsk?

I did read that but not entirely sure how correct it is. We’ve played the likes of Asteras, Maribor, Rijeka etc. from South-East Europe over the last few years and I’m not sure how they would fit into regionalising.

These are the groups from the EL QR2 draw last year (copied from https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleagu...g-round-draw/:

    Groupings

    Group 1

    Seeded:
    AFC Ajax (NED)
    Molde FK (NOR)
    SK Rapid Wien (AUT)
    Trabzonspor A.Ş. (TUR)
    Cercle Brugge KSV (BEL)

    Unseeded:
MFK Ružomberok (SVK) - FC Tobol (KAZ)
    Kilmarnock FC (SCO)
    Silkeborg IF (DEN)
    FK Vojvodina (SRB)
KF Llapi 1932 (KOS) - Wisła Kraków (POL)

    Group 2

    Seeded:
    SC Braga (POR)
FC Sheriff Tiraspol (MDA) - PFC Zire (AZE)
    HNK Rijeka (CRO)
PFC Botev Plovdiv (BUL) - NK Maribor (SVN)

    Unseeded:
    Panathinaikos FC (GRE)
    Maccabi Petah Tikva FC (ISR)
IF Elfsborg (SWE) - Pafos FC (CYP)
Paksi FC (HUN) - FC Corvinul Hunedoara (ROU)
It doesn't mention regions but does say:

The UEFA administration may form groups for the draw in accordance with the principles set by the Club Competitions Committee. Clubs from the same association cannot be drawn against each other.

A draw is conducted to determine the ties of each match and which team plays the first leg match at home.

In accordance with the relevant decisions of the UEFA Executive Committee, teams from the following associations may not be drawn against each other:

    Armenia – Azerbaijan
    Gibraltar – Spain
    Kosovo – Bosnia and Herzegovina
    Kosovo – Serbia
    Kosovo – Russia*
    Ukraine – Russia*
    Ukraine – Belarus
    Clear as mud.

I guess there's a bit of politics going on. The Serbs are kept away from Croats and Slovenes, Turks from Greek Cypriots etc.

Looks like the regionalisation is applied to the unseeded teams only.

Every year the European draws come round, I go looking for the “principles set by the club competitions committee”. I’ve never been able to find them.

Edit: I’ve actually found them this time, this is the version for the season just ended: https://editorial.uefa.com/resources...r_ko_phase.pdf

Still doesn’t make it clear how they decide on the groupings

I don't think we can draw Utrecht as they are unseeded too.

So one of Braga, midtjylland, Anderlecht or Lugano.

I know midtjylland have done well in Europe recently but would they be likely to lose players most summers on the back of doing well? I know we’d be big underdogs but would we have any sort of a chance against them?

I’d say it’d be very difficult. At glance, they seem about on par with Lugano but with the benefit for us that Midtjylland would be seeded in QR3 unlike Lugano so it’s probably the preferable of the two since we would become seeded for QR3 by beating them. Probably the joint 4th hardest draw after Shakhtar, Braga and Anderlecht.

We would be playing them right at the start of their League which historically seems to benefit Scandinavian teams in the early stages of Europe, though they do start a lot later than the Swedish and Norwegian leagues so it’s less of a factor.

We drop to the conference league playoff round, which is an all or nothing tie to enter the conference league groups or go home.
