I don't like getting hammered by some obscure teams in Europe either. It's just an annual or bi-annual reminder that hibs no longer belong in that company and the awful decline of Scottish football over the past few decades.

Europe is however, unfortunately, where the money is, and for clubs like ours, in a lop sided league with a pishy wee tv deal that's not worth buttons, progressing in Europe on a regular basis is one of the few options available to us for raising the kind of cash that will hopefully lead to the domestic success we all crave
I think you maybe could do with a visit to the doctor.

Ah, Hearts. Conquerors of Europe, dominators of Scottish football, seen by all as the prime example of how a football club should be owned and led, invested millions wisely, have the bigliest and most atmospheric stadium, 400,000 plus supporters, advised by a AI supercomputer, purveyor of chips, managed by a young up and coming manager, who also dominated Scottish football, we can only dream of being like them. Oh! Wait……they’re s**t.

What a wonderful day on the inter...

If Scottish football is in "awful decline" why do we have one of the most attended leagues in the world per capita?

Can you tell me the last side that was "obscure" that "hammered" us in European football? What a very strange thing to say.

And what a strange post to get annoyed about.

Per capita attendances are excellent. You really trying to pretend scottish football hasn't declined since the 70s and 80s when clubs like Hibs, then later Aberdeen and Dundee United were going deep into European competitions?

Unfortunately, yes it has however that's not down to Scottish football itself, Sky and bands of billionaires came along and decided to pump hundreds of millions/billions into the English, Italian, Spanish & German game while we got left behind.

Look at the investment happening down south abroad, its not Scottish footballs fault that these billionaires are choosing to invest where they know millions are being spent by sky/bt?

I'm still waiting on you confirming the weirdest part of your take, which "Obscure" teams have "hammered" us in Europe?

Focus on the word obscure if that helps. We've taken hammerings in Europe as have others. The reason Saturday is such a gut punch is because we all know it's going to be difficult to get into the groups. By no means impossible, but difficult. History in the last couple of decades tell us that. We've looked at the potential teams in the qualifiers with us and we've thought to ourselves, christ, it's gonna be tough. I'm not sure any of those same names would have put the fear of God into Scottish teams 40 years ago.

We're in agreement then that our domestic game has declined. I also agree with you on the reasons. That's my last word on it, as I was initially empathising with another poster on his weariness with Europe and this was otherwise an uplifting thread about our season tickets

I was certainly pretty hammered at the Luzern away game. Maybe that's what he's meaning?

Oh piss off mate. Loser mentality? We all aspire to the club improving and getting back to that level. I even alluded to it in my post.

There's no denying though that scottish clubs (not just hibs) performances in Europe, with the odd exception, are appalling year in year out.
    Nope, we overperform big time.

Scotland is ranked 14th in Europe, which is very good, considering we have the 29th largest population. Big countries ranked below us include Poland, Kazakhstan, Romania, Sweden, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Serbia and Denmark.

    Not very shabby at all.

it's only 2 weeks since we played Rangers, when their captain at Easter Road had also captained them recently to a penalty shoot out in a European final

it's only a few months back that we were beating half-decent Swiss opposition to get to the Conference League play off where we were undone by bad luck in the draw - there were only 2 teams to avoid, Bilbao and Villa, and we got one of them

Personally I think we have a more than decent chance in July/Aug this year - but the key is to be better prepared than the opponent (whoever it ends up being) for the games in July, as we will do best if we win the first tie & take the seeding of Anderlecht or whoever, into the subsequent round

    Maribor? Malmo?

''aggregate score of 9–0 was a record defeat for a Scottish club in European competition''

That will be the obscure Malmo who were in the European Cup Final in 1979?

Wouldn't call either of those teams obscure

I can remember being at Easter Road in 1970 when we beat Malmo 6-0

Other countries have certainly improved a lot quicker and better since then than Scottish Clubs.

    Barcelona?

Edit: That doesn't count. It was a friendly.

Over a decade ago. Since then we have played well and eliminated seeded teams.

2016 - Eliminated by Brondby on penalties while in the Championship, won in Denmark.

2021 - Eliminated Asteras. Knocked out by Molde after we lost McGinn and Halaand a generational talent for them returned. Nothing between the sides at ER.

2023 - Eliminated Luzern. Knocked out by Aston Villa who a year later would reach the latter stages of the Champions League.

Our team now is better than any of those previous teams.

We should have beaten Brondy over 2 legs had it not been for Otso Virtanen.

Asters and Molde was 2018, not 2021. And I’d argue our team was superior that year to now.

McGinn, Bogdan, SDG, McGregor, Porteous, Ambrose, Bartley and Boyle were all in that squad.

And Cummings scored a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside.

Of course you’re right, 2021 was Rijeka where we were well matched until the sending off.

The performances of this current team have been better than the performances of our team in 2018/19.

I like of get what you mean.

I’ve been saying half-jokingly for a while now that Scottish Football is a quest to finish third, get pumped a few times in Europe then derail your season because you don’t have the squad depth and finish in the bottom six, ready for a restart to try and get third again 😂

I know they have. I wasn't really referring to the Rangers and Celtics of this world. They dont really operate in the same world as the rest of us in Scotland.

More us, hearts, Aberdeen, Dundee United etc

I'm sure if it was close to 14k we would be shouting about it, they should still be good and with a couple of "Diamonds" as MM put it we should kick on again

I think the previous record was 13.5k, so we’re over that now going by the notes from the supporters panel meeting.

I think they said it was record sales at this stage of the closed season, not overall.

I believe, from someone at the meting, that its the 13500 record that has been broken but as i wasn't there it's just what i've heard rather than hard facts. Either way its positive sales so far.

Not sure why we've not made more of these sales, drumming up a bit more excitement around sales sometimes drives sales further.
