Does anyone who knows more about this than me (which wouldn't be hard!) think this is a political choice, to deal with the US's right wing Catholic Church faction? Or the current state of things in the US in general?
It's difficult to pigeon hole Popes politically, and I'm more guilty of trying than most.

As an example one of the big contenders, Cardinal Sarah, was seen as a leading light for the conservatives. Certainly in terms of social issues he is. Yet being from the global south and developing world he is a big advocate for action on climate change which would be seen as 'liberal' in the developed world where it impact us less in the short term.

In terms of doctrine on social issues he's going to be conservative by secular standards, all Popes are. Francis was liberal by church standards but his views would sit well to the right on secular society. I think he'll be more of the same in terms of calls for social justice, charity, dialogue, listening to the people and being a bit more bottom up rather than a cleric centric top down. He all but endorsed his predecessor in that regard. His choice of name suggests there will be elements of the progressive about him if it was influenced by the last Pope to use it.

It's unprecedented really. A US Pope was off limits throughout history, or at least since the emergence of them as a superpower. I don't think secular politics are totally irrelevant here but I think it's an endorsement of Francisism in one regard while maybe being a bit more conciliatory to those on the 'other side' (wearing the full garb when appearing on the balcony is one display of ostentatiousness that Francis outright refused to do).

It's a wait and see moment really. People will mock it all, as is their right to do, but it is almost inarguably one of the most important soft diplomacy positions in the world in global affairs and also one which guides the views of many millions of people. I do wonder if the current direction of US politics, and the influence that has on world affairs, was at the back of some Cardinals minds when they cast their vote. A potentially important counterweight.

I'm more hopeful he will be now than I was only a few minutes ago. He spoke well and it seems his views have shifted in recent times. His endorsement of Francis and his path makes me tentatively optimistic.

I'm not a catholic but I've really quite enjoyed the theatre around the selection of the new pope and have watched a lot of coverage of it.

It's always good to see big crowds, smiling faces, positivity and optimism, even if the nuts and bolts of what it all actually relates to is largely lost on me.

    Do they? Good to know.

Maybe one for PB, but do you think that had something to do with his (relatively quick) election?

I think its down to his social media activity, which although scant, has been critical of Vance and Trump over immigration in particular. The MAGA crew are calling him ‘another Marxist’. Words on twitter are really meaningless these days.

In a moderately amusing aside (by the standards of terrible jokes only a handful of Catholics might find funny anyway) the intercessions at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer during Mass mention both the Pope and the local Bishop (or for the last couple of weeks omit the Pope because there hasn't been one).

The Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh is Leo Cushley so the prayer will now be recited as:

'Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo our Pope and Leo our Bishop and all the clergy'

There will be a few Priests practicing their lines between now and Sunday to avoid any slip ups I'd imagine.

    Love it.

Maybe we've cracked it. All it takes is one **** in the White House, and (most of) the entire world is united.

God moves in mysterious ways, so she does.

The new Pope didn't post once in 2024. In 2025, he posted 5 times:

    - Criticized JD Vance's take on Jesus
    - Posted article critiquing Vance's statements on deportation policies
    - Retweeted the Pope's health twice
    - Retweeted criticism of Trump & Bukele's laughter at Abrego Garcia
