Alexander Ovechkin breaks Wayne Gretzky's NHL career goals record by scoring his 895th. Alexander Ovechkin described breaking Wayne Gretzky's record as the all-time top goalscorer in the NHL as “an unbelievable moment” on Sunday.

Would be my least favourite American sport, did watch some games years ago when it was on C5 and some thought the record would never be broken.

For a 38 year old to come back from a leg break this season and achieve it is something else. He'd have passed it years ago if he hadn't had two lock outs and a covid shortened season tbf.

Next season is his last with the caps, so it'll probably end up around 930 or so.

It's a crazy record on its own and unbelievable that Ovechkin has broken it, but it's even more mental to think he has played nearly 1,500 games in his career (the same as Gretzky) but is still over 1,200 points (goals plus assists) short of Gretzky's points record. I'm sure people though that Gretzky's goals record would never be beaten, but surely that is a record which will stand for as long as the NHL exists?

When he broke his leg, I assumed it wouldn't be happening this season - pretty impressive that he did it. Caps are our local team, and the anticipation's been a bit of a lift for the town, amidst the general sense of doom. The season's been impressive all round. (As opposed to their nba flatmates, the Wizards. Currently second bottom of the league. )
