I think some have taken his comments about his body giving up on him a little too seriously.
Agreed, Gayle was just giving a run of the mill light weight interview and saying any old thing.

Gayle and Hoilett are both doing well since reverting to 20 minute sub roles. Both good signings by Mackay and I believe both were recruited to get us through this season only. I wouldn't give them new contracts. Reasons are two fold.

Firstly age, Gayle will be 36 early next season and Hoilett will be 35 just after this season ends.
Secondly player wage budget. We can't keep everyone. If you keep both that's probably 2 less players you can recruit.

However, Hibs staff will know best re their fitness levels, injury and medical issues and if either player are offered another deal I will be good with that.

I wasn't keen on him signing. Nothing to do with him personally but I like players who are on the up or have something to prove and with some potential resale. Totally wrong on Gayle and also Hoillett. Both have made a number of significant contributions and moreover I think they add to the squad with that experience of seeing games out. Gayle's energy on Sunday was great to watch but I can't help but think if he is working so hard at a detriment to his own wellbeing. Its up to him but he has earned another year or maybe a pay as you play contract

He is clearly loving it here even if only getting 20 minutes as a sub , he gives his all and shows his quality
    Was an inspired signing

I think what hasnt been said so far is that the value they bring to the training ground and the advice they can pass on to the younger players coming through is priceless as mentioned earlier not since Grant Holt do i believe we have had a player who has played at the top level and you can see the influence filtering down. I still say Hoillet is one of the most skillfull footballers we have had at Easter road in a long time.

Love the guy, very switched on footballer and wouldn’t underestimate his big part in our revival.

These experienced players are worth their weight in gold - Mixu, Brewster, Holt - bring a stability and confidence to any team

Understated at the time but loved how he kept the ball moving and pushed it through perfectly timed to Junior Hoilett for his ‘offside’ goal at Tannadice that on review counted and his exquisite cool calm finish yesterday when a couple of yards offside lobbing the ball over Plooky into the empty net

    Guy is class

[I]"[U][U][U]My body's starting to break down a bit and it's likely that I might pack it in.

"It's just a whole heap of things - you're not able to generate the same speed and power as other people. From game to game it's hard to recover as quickly as before.

"I've always wanted to play, do what I can to help out the team, and when you feel like you're not really able to do that, then that's sort of a difficult time.

"I'd love to play forever, but with injuries and stuff like that, your body starts to pick up stuff that you probably need to think about.

"It's not just muscle injuries, other things as well that could prevent you in later life, maybe playing in the garden with your kids and stuff like that. These are things I need to take into consideration."

I think Gayle was being pretty open about the challenges of playing. These aren't just throwaway quips, he's obviously experiencing the aches and pains associated with being a professional sportsman for the best part of 20 years. Hardly, saying any old thing really is it?

Gayle shown his class and contributed well enough, but I very much doubt he (or Hoilett) will be at Hibs next season.

Hopefully he doesn’t want to retire and we offer him another deal for next season.

    Your right.
I kinda ignored it at the time.
Thought he was possibly trying to manage expectations of the supporters or perhaps getting himself teed up to chuck it. Could have been hacked off that day with being away from home. Could just have been he didn't expect to start games and was struggling for fitness and thought his body wasn't up to it anymore.
Whatever it was, he certainly seems much happier coming off the bench for 20 minutes since Bowie and Kuharevych returned from injury.

Dwight Gayle has been adored everywhere he's played for a reason. He's been a brilliant signing.

Like him a lot. One season on loan to WBA and he was on fire. Their fans still love him.

What an unbelievable signing he's been. Desperate for him to stay another year.

It's not just what he offers every time he's on the pitch, which is clear to see his quality. It's the fact that so many of our younger players have come out and said what an amazing guy he is in training helping and giving them advice.

    Really, really like the guy.

That’s exactly the way I’d put it.

We’ve had a few veteran type strikers who’ve played at a good level but for me he’s been the best. Some of his cameo appearances in particular have been sublime.

I guess it’ll depend on finances but if we get 3rd we’ll need a bigger squad and he could be very useful next season.

4 goals and 4 assists for the amount of time spent on the park is actually a really good return. His contribution to help us see the game out yesterday was brilliant, just knowing where to be and what to do.

Problem earlier on in the season was being too reliant on the likes of him and Hoilett. Dipping in and out of the team and nicking the odd goal here and there is really what you need from players like them.

Same impact as Grant Holt. Comes here with a prestigious career not really knowing about Hibs but like Grant, makes an instant impact, gets the club, and genuinely looks like he’ll look back very fondly on his short time here. And a double derby winner 💚 cracking player !

I think Gayle has been a level above what Holt was for us. Holt did us a turn but I just think Gayle has that extra bit of class.

Agree with others, if his body can handle if I’d definitely give him another year, Hoilett too. Both are great professionals and good options to have off the bench.

His experience and class off the bench has been vital. The difference between bringing him on and say McKirdy is just night and day.

Shows how important it is to have a strong squad.

Just watched the club's YT clip of SOL. Dwight was belting the song out then runs over to the East jumping and fist pumping. IMO it says a lot about SDG, the coaching staff and the club, that a man of his age, experience and pedigree is clearly moved by it all. He's a class player to boot. I hope he doesn't retire.
Could possibly be non of the above. He could be the ultimate professional giving his all for any club he plays for & embracing the fans on his journey.

Agree with all of that and its also a blocker to any youngsters getting a place on the bench. I really like them both and both are so technically good players as well as real game intelligence but I honestly think Gayle's body is giving up on him. He can do the odd 20 mins and he gives it 100%+ for as long as he is on the pitch (as does Hoilett) but another season I think is a push to far and limits the effectiveness of them. Let them leave us on a high rather than in 8-9 months if we were going through a bad patch then fans start to turn on them as 'wage thieves' or blockers to the likes of Rudi or other youngsters getting more of a chance.

For all the fact that Gayle has played less than ALF I think he will leave a longer memory and hopefully for him if he does retire from footy it will be a very memorable season for him. Same for Hoilett who I wish was 2 years younger - he would never be another Russell but he is as close to it as we have had since he left.

Case in point in taking his earlier interview a bit too literally.

So he was the one that made the comments and knows his body better than anyone and also the fact that he is being used very sparingly suggests to me that the coaches/physios at Hibs realise that too. We would all want it not to be true but I don't see him getting a contract beyond the end of this season (at least in a playing capacity) and suspect he will also retire at the end of this season. Based on his own comments and the fact that he has made 10 appearances for us (not sure how many minutes that adds up to) but that suggests more evidence that physically he is struggling (understandably having played football for so long at a high level).

I said to my mate during Sunday's game when he came on, everyone wants him to do well - he has really captured the hearts of Hibs fans because you know he is giving it 100%+ all the time and you can still see the talent but that doesn't change my opinion that that he won't go beyond this season. Lets just appreciate him (and Hoilett) for as long as we have them.

Did you actually read what he said, it wasn't a throwaway comment or an ambiguous statement, he literally said his body is breaking down.

Gayle has played 738 minutes of football for Hibs (just over the equivalent of eight games). It is what it is, he's a good player, but I very much doubt he'll be playing football anywhere next season.

I loved it when he popped the ball over Gordon even though he was well offside. It wasted another 30 seconds. You used to get booked for that now VAR checks it
