Gutted to hear the new of Denis passing. He was my football hero. Was taken by my dad to Wembley to see the England v Scotland game in 1967, saw him score, and idolised him ever since.
Denis wass desperate to get home after his year at Torino. The story went that he headed home to Aberdeen and refused to answer the phone to Torino who wanted him back. Sir Matt finally landed him for a record fee of £115,000 which realised a £5,000 profit for the Italian club. However, Juventus approached Torino and offered £160,000 for his services. Denis would have none of it and headed to Manchester United.
Denis once said that the tight catenaccio defences he faced in Italy prepared him well for the relative freedom he got from marking in England.
Denis could score goals from any height, any angle and had wonderful aerial ability. He was combative, dynamic and utterly deadly around the box - an instinctive finisher.
We will never see his like again.
Requiescat in pace, the great Denis Law.Last edited by stu in nottingham; 18-01-2025 at 03:30 PM.
