That's all that matters really. I love that the women's game so far hasn't allowed the relentless cynicism that can quickly reduce the men's game to a depressingly joyless experience take root. The Capital Cup is a nice wee addition to things, hopefully it becomes a long standing tradition for women's Derby games.

As an aside I take it you are against the 'modern day hokey marketing' in rugby that sees the Calcutta Cup awarded every time England and Scotland meet each other in the six nations.
I was an average player and then a season ticket holder for many years at a Borders rugby club but have not been to a rugby game or watched one on TV since the SRU killed off the club game in the Scottish Borders in favour of forming 2 district teams, one in Edinburgh and one in Glasgow.
Imagine that being done to Scottish football.

As for the Calcutta Cup, that has been competed for since the 1870's so no modern day contrivance. What is a blatant contrivance are the South Africans, New Zealanders and Aussies in the Scotland team. That's to say nothing of the masses of English guys and public schoolboys.

P.S. Just had a quick look at the pen pictures of the 5 uncapped players selected for Scotland's Autumn Nations Series against Fiji, South Africa, Portugal and Australia. Looks like a New Zealander, an Aussie, 2 public school boys and a Scottish guy.
The New Zealander qualifies on residency grounds, 5 years?

    1-1 ft. Bit frustrating.

Some heated exchanges over the late red for Thistle.
The sweary exchange at the end in the crowd was funny, that one Thistle fan wouldn't shut up all game.

I agree about the club game being killed. IIRC there were originally 4 pro teams formed, including the Border Reivers and Caledonia Reds but they scrapped the latter two to save money.

Does being a public schoolboy make you less Scottish? I can't agree. Some of the all-time greats went to public schools eg the Hastings brothers, John Jeffrey, David Sole, Andy Irvine etc.

Only in the mind of someone with a chip on their shoulder. A pathetic suggestion in my book.

No but it makes you less representative of the Scottish people.
Back in the days of the players you mention there was a far more representative mix of classes in the Scottish team and it was easy to refute the claims that it was a game predominately played by the middle classes. In the most recent Scotland squad of 47 players only 2 were from the previous Scottish rugby power house of the Borders and very few of the squad were born in Scotland.

The FP's and their administrators at the SRU finally found a way to shut down the oiks they struggled to beat on the pitch. I know it wasn't about that, it was about the new professional era and money but it totally killed the club game in Scotland.

I couldn't agree more about the amateur days being far more representative of the rugby playing population of Scotland and, like you, I've maintained a far more cursory interest in the game ever since. However, Edinburgh in particular is top heavy with public schools so I think those players who came from that background were as representative of the Scottish rugby population as any. The FP clubs, though, are a thing of the past are they not? My brother played for Stew Mel 2nds for a bit and we never went to the school. When I lived in Shandon I'd occasionally go to Meggetland or Myreside just to catch a game but I had no affinity to Boroughmuir or Watsonians. They were both cracking teams at the time though.

Anyway, probably a discussion for the other sports thread!

Very few born in Scotland? What was the split of those born here and those not?

I know we’ve had a decent chunk born overseas in the last few decades, just felt that pheffernan’s post about there being few out of 47 in the autumn squad felt a bit off, that’s why I asked hat the split was

All of the home nations have recruited from overseas in that timeframe, despite what some England fans seem to think (no one on here tbf)

    Great effort.

Scottish Cup derby tomorrow for the women's team. Could do with a pick-me-up after a bad set of results for the men today.

You'll struggle to get the cup scores from the BBC today though. Poor show.

Not sure I would trust them with scores given the quality of their journalists arithmetic "In terms of shots on target (including goals), Hearts have only had one more - 114 compared to Hibs' 112. "

    Indeed.

It's live right now on the Scottish Cup YouTube channel, not that you'd know that unless you hunted it out.

    0-0 after first 20 mins.

    1-0 Hearts. Soft goal.

Nothing between the sides today and we were undone by a route one punt that I felt Hunter should’ve done better with. Chance at the end for Adams going through was a big one and her touch every bit as poor as Kuharevich yesterday! Great save from Clachers at the penalty. Always feel with this Hearts side we need to score first as they are set up to defend leads imo

    Answering your question;
13 of the 23 man Scotland match day squad were born in Scotland, so a 56% Scottish squad beat Australia. The Scottish captain was ...... Australian.
Another 2 players and the Scottish players in the Scotland match day squad would have been in the minority.
This is not unique to the Scotland international team. Ireland are doping their RU team in the same way. Good on Wales for largely resisting buying new Welshmen.

France, England and South Africa and to a lesser extent Australia, should be wiping the floor with the other countries that play rugby seriously none of whom have a population over 5.5 million. I get it that doping their team helps the smaller nations compete.

Apologies for talking mens rugby on the excellent Hibs womans football thread.

You said very few of the 47 in the squad were born in Scotland, which is the breakdown I was querying. For the match day squad you’ve listed, I wouldn’t describe 56% as ‘very few’ (albeit I take your point about there being a significant proportion of non-Scottish born players)

I agree about other nations doing this as well, wales who have done so in the past, although if you read any of the bbc comment sections regarding rugby, you’d think Scotland haven’t had a Scottish born player in about 10 years
