    Hibs social media

Now that there appears to be an ongoing exodus from X/Twitter, myself included, do Hibs have any plans on starting an account on Bluesky? The handle is registered there but there's no content - unsure whether this is the club or not. Hearts, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and St Mirren all have active accounts over there.

What’s going to be the difference between the two platforms?

I'm on bluesky now too, far more civilised just now but have noticed the cult of trumpet magats are trolling in but as said earlier, can easily block.

Far easier to get rid of them and there are a number of users actively cultivating automated block lists too.

Pretty sure the club handle on Bluesky is owned by the club. They’ll be weighing up the net benefit of becoming active on there, then preparing any necessary assets/updating content management systems to include the new account if they go ahead with it.

I joined yesterday. Twitter has been absolutely destroyed by that pathetic Nazi gimp, quite a shame.

I genuinely thought they were on bluesky. There was an unofficial account and an official account that was posting the exact same content that was on Twitter. I was following them in sure 👀👀 as we're the like of Hibs observer and the boy from the EEN. I can't see the account now??

I think you're right. I wouldn't expect us to ditch Twitter any time soon as a club as it's probably our best asset from a social media point of view. But it's similarity to Twitter means that it's likely to be easy to integrate into any planning.

I think businesses for a while have been diversifying their social following better since Musk took over Twitter with a host of new ways to get your eyes onto their content. Hibs introduced the WhatsApp channel and obviously our own app this year alone. I think if you were on Twitter just for Hibs then those two things alone would allow you to ditch it quite easily as anything you need to know can be given to you just as quickly.

There is still loads of great content on Twitter. I use it, albeit far more sporadically nowadays.

The issue isn't that individual users are all Nazis (albeit a decent number are) but rather the algorithms are now worked in such a way that some extreme right wing content is pushed to the forefront. We aren't talking a bit small c conservative, my 'for you' tab is full of opinions and content that is downright dangerous. Misinformation, dehumanising language, racism, misogyny, homophobia and a whole lot more.

The richest man in the world didn't buy Twitter to 'preserve free specch' or create a worldwide 'village square'. He bought it because he realises the benefits of new media and wants to control the narrative by pushing his agenda. We are all pawns in his dangerous game.

I was listening to a journalist the other night on 5 Live while they were debating the merits of Blue Sky vs Twitter. She said she’d ditched Twitter earlier this year for the reasons you mention. The algorithms were bombarding her with rubbish that was totally irrelevant and inappropriate to her. Musk has destroyed it.

Well that’s one view to take I suppose.

I think X is much better now that the algorithm isn’t pushing all the Woke leftist nonsense that we suffered for years.

I’ve yet to see any posts mentioning Nazis on it. Maybe that’s more to do with what you’re using it for?

Social media being what it is, it will be only time before bluesky becomes as Twitter currently is.

Must admit I’d never even heard of bluesky. Had a quick look, is it just a left wing safe space/echo chamber like X used to be? Seems to be almost identical in format, content and even colour scheme to X when it was Twitter.

Bin it. I did. It was easy to do.

Vote with your feet - or thumbs in this case - and get yourself off it. Far better for your mental health not having bile fired at you from all directions.

It's Twitter except not an open harassment forum for marginalised people. If that's what you think an echo chamber is then sure, it is one.

    Pretty much.

It's a platform for people who don't want to engage with others who don't share the same views as them.

The Guardian epitomise this. Flouncing off X, but not without leaving a self-righteous essay about why they're leaving.

I note that they were also offering staff counselling after Trump's election win!! Not exactly in keeping with the old hard-bitten journalist image...

I've never used Bluesky so can't comment on that but you have basically just described X.

Regardless of the topic it's just groups of people reaffirming their belief that they hold the only valid viewpoint. If Bluesky has tipped too far in the other direction then that's a shame as any echo chamber is undesirable but X is bordering on unreadable now. I've always enjoyed reading opinions I don't agree with and arguing against them. It's ceases to be enjoyable when there is no desire to actively engage in debate with an open mind though, no desire to be open to changing one's mind and when facts cease to matter as opinion is seen as an adequate replacement and that is what X has become.

I saw someone break down a video the other day that was just out and out gaslighting. It was from an Irish talk show and showed an alleged confrontation between a black woman and a white woman with the former allegedly gleefully mocking the latter because she had been 'given' a house whilst the other hadn't. Someone broke down the false narrative and showed the original video in it's entirety and proved the shared clip had been edited and the order of the conversation changed to paint a false narrative. The 2 women were hugely sympathetic to each others plight and were largely on the same page about the issues they faced, the former had also very much not been given a house. Despite this people and lots and lots of bots piled in to race bait and rant about immigration (the black lady was born in Ireland incidentally) and would not accept they had been misled. It's a bit like the Americans with chronic or terminal illnesses now panicking because they didn't realise 'Obamacare' and the Affordable Care Act were the same thing and are now terrified they are going to be priced out of their treatment. So wrapped up in a narrative, so blinded by misinformation and so determined to get rid of bad, commie Obamacare that they failed to do a bit of basic fact checking that would have taken all of 15 seconds.
