    Bars, the new Leith

There seems to be a load of new bars opened up in Leith in the last few years. Hoping to sample a few this weekend rather than stick to the familiar haunts, my brother travelling up too. Any recommendations?

The Newbarns Taproom on Jane Street. Their pilsner is absolute nectar.

I generally prefer the older haunts but that one is well worth the visit even just for a couple imo.

Nauticus on Duke Street is great but a bit more cocktail/upmarker.

Malones can be quite decent and does a good pint of T and a good Guinness.

The Three Marys on Henderson Street is decent for cocktails.

Lost in Leith on Commercial Street and the Campervan Taproom on Jane Street are Campervan Brewery's places and are decent.

Had a great weekend, well bar the football, how many times have I said that.

Nobles for breakfast, then drink wise Malones, Robbies, Nauticus, The Barologist, Teuchters.

Anyone tried the new Penny Black (old Black Bull) yet? Thinking of heading there Saturday lunchtime for a bit before the game

If there isn't an eclectic mix of ravers, students, casuals, alcoholics, posties and thieves among the clientele then it's not worthy of the Penny Black name.

Was in there last night for one before getting the train home. It's exactly the same as it was, minus the excellent jukebox. Had Tenants, which I don't think was there before but could be wrong.

Shame the juke box is gone. The kind of punter who drinks there will have changed too then.

Aw is that the old Penny Black at the back of the Cafe Royal ?

Was a welcome Oasis in a desert of closed pubs open all hours back in the day

I’m sure I heard the jukebox was saved and was taken elsewhere.

Did the previous owners have a few pubs? I’m sure it was taken to one of their other ones, wish I could remember which one though…

Many a lost morning spent in the old Penny Black in the 80's/90's.

I would be described as more than one of the eclectic mix you describe that frequented the place, I'm not going to say which ones though.

Me too, albeit it would be late 90s / early 00s for me.

Filled that tricky spot between casinos closing and most of the pubs reopening when looking to drink 24 hours a day.

Clientele was definitely one of a kind.

Only good memories although I wince about the effect that sort of drinking would have on me now.

I’m drinking this Friday and already dreading it.

Cooper’s Rest reopening.Used to drink in there post-match when I lived next door in 68 Lorne Street. Could get to the bar from my top floor flat in 20 seconds. It’ll be a ‘no colours’ type bar sadly.

Bit of a stretch to say the Coopers Rest is reopening if that’s who’s opening it
