Good video that, was more vocal than I’ve given him credit for

I will say one thing though there ls a bit where paok are kicking off for 2nd half Joe is demanding a press straight away due to the wind presumably to force them to go long they kick off and nobody presses, it’s not a huge big deal but there has been at least 2 managers recently who have spoke about pressing hard to win the ball back and I am yet to see a hibs team do it, do we think SDG with his hard work is a must attitude try and get an actual pressing system going or is it just purely sound bites for 1 guy to chase down a couple of lost causes ala prime Gareth Evans

If we are going to do proper organised pressing then it will take a while to implement. As you say, it's not about individuals chasing lost causes and it's not just 'everybody press all the time'. Pressing in groups and pressing the right opponents at the right time won't happen overnight.

One thing that video clearly shows is what a class footballer he is.

I did chuckle at that 😅 nah it shows why he’s Captain. Even at the end giving advice from the bench.

Although just a snapshop you can see how he takes Captains role seriously - and also how it helps having a CM doing the job. Still has plenty to ofer as a player good football and plenty decent tackles in that short bit. Also good to see leadership / chat from O'Hora too - think the new CH's are going to be firm favourites

Yeah I agree it’s not an overnight thing it’s just the start of a new reign we’ve been told about pressing high and winning the all back after x amount of time losing it etc etc it just feels like here we go again we’re mentioning pressing and there is no real team structure to see that indicates we are pressing grates on me a bit as I think that’s how we see ourselves getting turned over by teams we should be beating we allow them too much time and they press us to death when they don’t have it forcing mistakes

I agree it's easy for a new manager to say we're going to do this or that – after the last few I'm very much in the camp of wait and see what's actually delivered, not getting excited about anything based on interviews.

Is it Newell that's being spoke off ? Still a passenger for me due to gross inconsistencies. Spare the bite backs please.

I'm a long term Newell critic but I enjoyed that. A good insight into how much encouragement and organisation he gives as well as his own effort.

Certainly gives numpties like me a small glimpse into the inner workings of a footballer.

If you had watched the recent game or the highlights from recent games then you would say that there is clear team structure and that we are pressing teams and winning the ball back pretty effectively. Scepticism is merited, but we also need a bit faith that Gray and his team are going to bring about change.

I’ve only watched the PAOK game I definitely see Improvement in defensive structure to the team without doubt, I cant say I noticed any structured pressing or any great desperation to win the ball back as soon as we lost it more like a squad getting into a defensive shape as quickly as possible which is fine if that’s what we are doing, my comments are based on the comment from Newell instructing to press PAOK and no one pressed and relating that to comments we have had preseason with other managers and we haven’t seen a pressing team on the pitch.

When opponents are a few levels better than you, pressing has disadvantages, but I still felt we put them under pressure whilst they were on the ball. Perhaps, You're right though, we also tried to maintain a defensive shape and conceded a lot of territory and possession. Young Molotnikov's main impact was from pressing defenders, assisted by Jair and Youan when they all came on.

I did notice those 3 when they came on your right but the guys behind them should be active as well as I said it’s no biggy we’ll see what happens over a period of time he’s had 3/4weeks

Very disappointed with the piper at the start. Tune was barely recognisable and out of tune. Kensell out!

Night and day from the Porto one haha. Thought O’Hora was class as well, very vocal.

Part of me is always a bit sceptical with these players mic’d up though. Are they always this vocal? Or is that maybe the point in the exercise, that they should be, so doing this will make them do it more often.

    Enjoyed it though!

Like the bit where he tells miller not to try guess where the ball is going in the position.

Think we’ve been guilty of that alot where players guess, doesn’t go where they want and the opposition has a tap in.

I stick up for Joe a lot and think he should be captain. Really good video and much better than Ryan “don’t tut at me” Porteous

I think it’s essential to have a captain that’s vocal and capable of motivating the team. Joe will help drive us on to better things hopefully!

Spot on. The other players wouldn't have it if someone was acting up to show off.

Joe's a very good player, a worthy captain and an asset to the team. He's got perfect but then we don't have any players who are.

Good content again this season, I did laugh at the update on WhatsApp with Boyler saying to SDG he will cook him dinner if SDG hits the crossbar, which he did.

Great wee video, really enjoyed watching that. I always think it's worth getting kids to watch and listen to what good players actually do and say during the game so that they can see it's about so much more than what you can do with a ball.

    A few takeaways from me
    - Joe's a good captain. He's got a good will to win and talks so many of the players through the game. He clearly has the trust of SDG and is going to be crucial in terms of dictating how we play through the season
    - the two new centre backs look good and both seem vocal and appear to be good leaders too. O'Hora specifically looks like he understands and wants to get involved but I like the look of both of them
    - do we have too many players who aren'y vocal enough, or could we just not hear them? Boyle always strikes me as someone who'd be talking to everyone around them and telling them what he wants, but that didn't come across.

Would love to watch a player mic'd up on a league game! Can you imagine an option to watch the derby with the captain of each team mic'd? Would be a giggle!

Great video and gave me an insight into the role of captain.

Also made me wonder why previous managers assigned captain duties to a GK. Looks like the captain needs to be in the mix amongst the players and not stuck in the box.

A very interesting watch, and a surprising amount of on field instructions and tactical advice which I would expect you re from the manager on the touch line rather than from a captain.

Having never played the game properly it’s fascinating to listen in to discussions on the pitch and quite enlightening for those of us with no real knowledge of how it all works.

For Newell to be passing on as much info there must be quite clear and thorough tactical plans discussed in advance from David Gray for Joe Newell to be organising on the pitch.

To hear the bench mic’d up for a game would be interesting also to get some insight into what goes on.
