Folks that turn right (will be left in the UK) off a main road and stop at the corner to glance over their shoulder and check their wing mirror to make sure nothing is coming from behind. Ffs, you've just driven alongside that part of the road, do you think Roadrunner is going to come rattling along the pavement.
Highway code now requires drivers to give way to pedestrians crossing at junctions. Certainly need to be aware of the pedestrians in the vicinity of corners.

Obviously, but if you pay attention on your approach to the turn you shouldn't have to stop to check behind you.

The number of people who seem to be driving about at the moment with headlights on their car not working.

I can understand how you might miss a brake light or whatever (albeit my car is nearly 10 years old and has a dashboard warning if any rear lights go) but surely you must notice if one of your front lights is gone when a significant amount of driving time is in the dark at this time of year?

A new bulb can be got for less than a tenner in Halfords so i don't really get why you'd rather creep around in semi darkness (or worse those people who put on their full beam to compensate).

Car registration plates being stuck on with double sided tape rather than using some more permanent fitting. We've had this car since January where it was brand new. The reg plate has fell off four times in that year. Dealership not interested.

I've had my last two cars plates stuck on with double sided tape and they've never fallen off. Looks better than having screws through your reg plate too. Must be quality of the tape or something else? Shouldn't be falling off like that!

Locals to Council: we have a problem with people constantly going the wrong way through the one way streets.

Council: we will send someone to have a look.

Me (nicely) to Council man who parked outside my house: excuse me, but you have just come through a no entry and are facing the wrong way. We have asked for someone to come and look at the signs because this is a problem.

Council man: its me they sent.

Councils don't do irony. But if they did...

I would have taken a photo showing the car and no entry sign and sent it to council, and maybe the police.

Having driven back through the city centre after midnight last night, I have two driving pet peeves to report.

    1. People sitting at traffic lights with their foot on the brake. There's a thing called a handbrake which saves you doing that, and which stops you blinding the car sitting behind you at the lights. BMW x5 I'm looking at you here.
    2. Uber / private hire drivers driving with their focus on their satnav. Drifting from lane to lane without any mirror or signal activity. Stopping in the middle of Queen Street at 12:30am when they realise they don't know which way to turn. Getting in the wrong lane at York Place lights entering Greenside roundabout eastbound and then drifting across into my lane without (as above) any mirror or signal action.

There seems to be an over reliance on sat navs for private hire drivers and even black cab drivers these days. We got a black cab home from the in-laws recently. Balerno to South Gyle. The driver was following sat nav but he couldn't even follow it properly. Kept missing his turn-offs, slammed on the brakes part way across the junction at the Riccarton Inn when he realised that was where the sat nav was taking him, then the comical going around the wee roundabout that's between Heriot Watt and the Park & Ride multiple times as he couldn't work out from the sat nav whether he should be taking the exit that goes into the P&R or the one that heads to the larger roundabout at the other side of the P&R.

I used to fly from Edinburgh regularly. Weekly. Usually I'd take the car to the airport but sometimes I knew I'd be flying back after having partaken of the booze. I first realised that the world was ending one morning when I hired a private hire taxi to take me to the airport. Driver used satnav. And we went along roads I hadn't travelled before - or since.

On the grounds that it proves a point nicely, I'll wait until I'm out with the police and playing with their speed gun again before I tell them.

And to be fair to the guy, he accepted that he had proven our point perfectly.

Amazing the amount of people that don’t understand how their auto stop and HSA works.

I’d assume almost any X5 will have both.

If your car has an electronic handbrake that comes on once you stop it keeps the brake lights on without your foot on the pedal.

Not on my car it doesn't. I honestly can't see the point for a car to do that.

ICE cars in EV charging bays. I was at Meadowbank on Thursday, 18 EV bays and every car, apart from mine was an ICE car.

Is it not a “dodge the traffic” kind of thing? Although I agree it seems so many drivers these days just don’t have that encyclopaedia-type knowledge of routes and destinations

A while back we were getting an Uber home from town and he took us a weird way. My mate questioned it, asked the driver if he knew where he was going and he said he has to follow the route the sat nav gives him.

A good few years ago now after a game my and a few mates got a private hire from somewhere in Leith and asked to go to the Royal Mile.

The Glaswegian drivers response was "where is that?", at first we thought he was joking but he was serious and we had to basically tell him what route to take.

Therein lies your problem, don't get an Uber, get a proper taxi where the driver has sat a topographical test, if he takes you the long way, complain to the cab office. Can't complain about an Uber taking you the long way as he's just a guy in a car following a sat nav, may as well get your mate to pick you up, give him a fiver for petrol and follow his sat nav.

I got a black cab the other week and the driver asked me at near enough every stage of the journey that you could go two different routes what one he is best taking (for example whether he should have went up Drum Brae and along Queensferry Road or whether he should carry on through Corstorphine). He then didn’t know what street was mine when he got there. He obviously knew the general area but never knew the streets individually.

I personally couldn’t really care less, it’s no skin off my nose to just tell them what way to go etc but it’s not the first time I’ve had black cab journey like that and my street isn’t exactly hidden away, it’s got 100+ properties, is in the city centre and a couple of shops on it.
