    Manslaughter?

Sorry for the clickbait title, but I couldn't think of a short one which explained the subject.

How can the hockey guy be charged with manslaughter? It was a freak accident, no?

As if the guy isn't devastated enough, FFS.

Yeah...unless there's something we don't know, that's an awful thing to put the guy through

Just replied on the other thread, looking at the videos is making me wonder... especially as I've now read he's an "enforcer" and supposed to put himself about a bit so to speak.
(He doesn't half make himself scarce straight after contact)

I take it back. That was deliberate.

I wish there was another clip of that without the racist replies to the tweet.

That's the hockey equivalent of stamping on someone's head. I think manslaughter is a fair call.

The aftermath beyond the impact is horrible to see, I wouldn't recommend viewing. Somebody sent it me in a group shortly after the event and all it was at that point, was an 'incident' shortly afterwards. Poor Adam Johnson was sadly pronounced dead at the hospital later. There is certainly a kicking motion which was dangerous play.

There has been and still remains a lot of grieving in Nottingham. The city is one that traditionally loves it's hockey and the hockey fraternity generally is a very close one, both players and fans. Thousands have queued up at the Ice Arena in Nottingham to pay their respects to Adam.

Players from both sides have been somewhat protective towards Sheffield's Matt Petgrave assaulted Adam Johnson, fans mainly just confused and not knowing what to think or believe. The incident doesn't really have a close precedent to my knowledge.

Nottingham Panthers games since have been cancelled, as one might imagine. A plan was made to have a round-robin memorial tournament between Sheffield, Nottingham and Manchester to ease players back into action. The first game between Sheffield and Manchester took place at the weekend and was headed by a standing ovation, maybe unbelieavably, for the perpetrator, Petgrave. Nottingham would be due to play next weekend.

There has always been an intense rivaly between Nottingham and Sheffield over the years, sometimes spilling over into bitterness. I often watch the Panthers in action. I'm not sure I want to be present at the next one of these fixtures. I really can't foresee what the nature of this rivalry will be in the future.

Deliberate kick with a sharp ice skating blade, definite manslaughter.

I played Ice Hockey till I was 19 and there is nothing on that footage that show it as deliberate. It does not take much to throw a skater of balance at the speed they move at and it could easily have been a natural reaction to that. The foot that makes contact appear to get stuck in the ice just before leaving it and in trying to correct that his leg has been thrown up.

I posted on the other thread a similar take from an old school friend of mine who played hockey at that level.

I don't know enough about the game one way or another but as I also said on the other thread it's now up to the police to investigate and then, if there is felt to be grounds to charge, the courts to provide a fair trial.

The racism that seems at the heart of a lot of people's viewpoint and general searching for conspiracy is a sad indictment of where we are as a society.

I don't know anything about ice hockey so I'm certainly not going to contradict you.

Without that knowledge, it does look like he deliberately raises his foot to kick Johnson, although I'm sure he doesn't intend to end his life.

I hope you're right and, if you are, I hope the court agrees.

Kicking at all is a no no in Hockey and can lead to a life ban. Karate kicking like that is 100% unheard of. I just don’t believe a player would try that.
You want to have a go at someone in hockey, you drop the gloves and get on with it.

A player launching himself feet-first at a spectator in a fitba ground was also unheard of, yet it happened.

Surely if his skate got stuck in the ice his momentum would have forced his upper body in his direction of travel rather than the opposite direction. If he then had to raise his foot to regain balance it would only work if it went in the opposite direction to that what we see in the video. I don't believe for a second that he intended to kill the guy and the kick was just a moment of madness.

The Nottingham Panthers made a very tasteful tribute to Adam Johnson on Saturday evening.

What a very emotional and lovely tribute that was.

About time. I was watching an NHL play off game the other night and saw a skate come very close to taking a players eye out. Sport can be dangerous.

"We have concluded that there is not a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offence and so there will not be a prosecution," Michael Quinn, deputy chief crown prosecutor, said.

That must be legal for, it was clearly an accident.
