Would you bet on a horse at 1/25, even if you had a fifty-fifty chance of winning?

1/25 horse beaten in a match race at Ripon today. This morning it was 1/16, meaning people were still steaming in at that price. You would have to bet a fortune to make anything. Is it the super-wealthy who put massive wagers on these races; the type who don’t bother if they lose? It makes no sense for anybody else to get involved.

    The winner was 9/1, BTW.

It makes sense when you lay it on Betfair at 1.06 😁

But yeah isn’t worth backing the fav at that price for us. But it’s the way the market turned out due to so many withdrawals before the final decs and one horse’s chances appearing to be a lot stronger than its only rival, on paper (It wasn’t close to a 50/50 chance.)

It didn’t work out that way, it happens. A few daft big money punters will have got their fingers burnt, and a few of us will have earned a few quid laying it.

Thing is, if someone is loaded, they don’t even need to be placing huge money on such a race, in order to make even a half-decent return. If you don’t need the money, why take the risk? Then again, human beings often have an insatiable appetite for more. I just don’t get why anyone, big or small punter, would back a horse at those kind of odds.

Well done, with your lay bet. I have never used the exchanges. It did cross my mind to put a few quid on the 9/1 winner, but, of course, I talked myself out of it, telling myself I might as well set fire to my stake….

Like you, I would usually just swerve the race. But had a few quid in Betfair to give it an interest… and it doesn’t take a lot at that price. (Was worth a bit more laying rather than backing the second horse).

Again, exchanges really do come in handy for those larger odds single bets.

    Thanks 👍

Go and explain to an idiot what this involves?

You're betting on the favourite to lose, folk take you at your chosen odds, and you state beforehand what your liability is so any lose is capped at a certain amount?

    Absolutely

Crazy to be backing a horse at anything like those odds. WeeRussell had the right idea.

That’s pretty much it in a nutshell. Your liability comes off your balance at outset (assuming it’s matched with others who are backing) so it’s much the same as backing, particularly in this example with only two runners.

I used to think of it as “setting your chosen odds” too as if you’re playing the bookie but in reality the odds are already there for you to lay so it really is just ‘matched betting’ .. albeit you can set your chosen odds at what you like and wait/hope someone picks them up… (so a bit like being a bookie!)

It’s pretty simple and not a lot different to backing.. just have to make sure you’re clicking the right buttons 😁… I still back far more than I lay. But sometimes heavily odds on things are worth a few quid to get beat, and in this case laying the fav was worth a good bit more than backing the outsider of two.

    Anyone put this on? 😁

Man Utd have been drawn to play 12 consecutive domestic cup ties at home - excluding the two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest earlier this year - to set a new record in British football history; the odds of drawing 12 home ties in a row are 4,096/1

Hibs to win tomorrow at 1.80 looks decent to me.
One to stick the house on perhaps.

Watkins shot on target price boost, EVS from 30/100 on Betfair Sportsbook, didn't take long.

What's the biggest bet you can put on these boosts?

Aye, it was a max of a tenner. I followed a few others on here and put a bet builder on the Hibs game so, it paid for that - Hibs win, Hibs most corners and Dundee most bookings @ 4s.

Fortunately not, considered it overnight and decided I was going to go for it but thought I'd wait for the teams to be announced.
By that time the odds had dropped to 1.61 so I didn't bother, no value in that price.
    A lucky escape.
My only bets were the above accy that obviously lost, only a tenner, and a tenner betbuilder on the Hibs game, which also lost.

    St Johnstone to beat Aberdeen

Good value on a player fouls bet tonight if that’s your thing

Ryan Strain making his Oz debut and up against Grealish. 9/2 with Paddy Power for 2 fouls. Same bet is 5/4 with Sky Bet.

Probably based on lack of data at PP but not sure that price will last
