Their hdi is higher than the uk’s and rising. The uk’s is falling relative to other nations.
I'm not bigging up the UK. I'm merely adding context to the comparison with other countries. Ireland has higher average salaries, but a higher cost of living. The GDP measure needs a lot of unpacking given Ireland's low tax status for business. This is an interesting discussion of inequality, including Ireland https://www.nerinstitute.net/blog/even-through-narrow-lens-income-evidence-inequality-has-fallen-ireland-mixed-best

Sorry, just so we are clear, are you arguing that people in Scotland have a higher standard of living than people in Ireland?

I don't think the direction of travel, taking in the past 25 years and where things are likely to go over the next 25 (for any number of reasons) is in Scotland's favour relative to Ireland.

I'm saying the is a complex interaction with a number of factors. I think Ireland has done really well, but it's not the land of milk and honey you describe.

So they are richer and more equal than us. Thank you. It’s nice when we agree.

You really need to take this seriously. It's not a game. Ireland has done well by exploiting a low business tax regime. This distorts the GDP as profits are repatriated to home countries. The approach only works in the long term if it promotes endogenous growth. There are some signs of this. Is it enough? Time will tell. Individual wealth in Ireland is increasing. This is largely driven by property prices. How stable is this? Interesting discussion here https://www.irishtimes.com/business/2022/08/04/republics-wealth-divide-driven-increasingly-by-property/

On health care, many people have to pay. This might be a model for the future here. But we can't ignore it.

I remember all the talk about the 'arc of prosperity '. Remember how that went?

You say that as if it didn’t also happen to the UK? The only difference was that they recovered.

No debate on what would be the appropriate punishment for lying in Parliament, instead a discussion on what the Tories on the Committee could cobble together to save face all round. This Tory party is despicable.

c'mon Rishi, don't be shy Rishi Sunak Refuses to Commit to Releasing his US Tax Returns – Byline Times

Rishi Sunak is refusing to commit to releasing details from his US tax returns, as he continues to delay the release of his long-promised financial details.
Sunak held a US green card during the last financial year, meaning he could have been liable to pay significant amounts of tax in the country during that period.
However, when asked if the returns will include details of his US activity, his press secretary replied that: “I’m not going to comment on what we’re going to put in the tax returns”.

am I being overly simplistic here? Surely the fact there’s photographic evidence of him being at at least 2 separate parties/get togethers/shindigs means he cannot say he didn’t lie in Parliament? He got a fixed penalty notice for one of them

or it there going to be a magic bullet style defence of ‘yes I was there with a group of people sitting right next to one another but there absolutely wasn’t a gathering of people’?

brilliant ‘I, Boris Johnson, do solemnly declare the truth. Yes, I know this is a first’ (msn.com)

now this is a first and that I’ve told a lot of porkies in the past. But I really, really promise that what you’re getting from me this time is the truth as agreed with my advisers. Which might look like lies but are actually the highest form of truth. The truth of untruths. As two negatives equal a positive, so two lies equal the truth. Besides which, nobody thinks I’m a liarI
I , Boris Johnson, do solemnly declare that what is in my dossier – the dossier which is mine – shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. So help me God. Let’s hope there isn’t one. Or I’m a goner. Yes, I know this is a first and that I’ve told a lot of porkies in the past. But I really, really promise that what you’re getting from me this time is the truth as agreed with my advisers. Which might look like lies but are actually the highest form of truth. The truth of untruths. As two negatives equal a positive, so two lies equal the truth. Besides which, nobody thinks I’m a liar. Other than anyone who’s ever met me.. Other than anyone who’s ever met me.

It was either that or conspire with Darius Guppy to have the committee beaten up?

    He has previous.
