I think Scotland's decline is terminal and inevitable.

There is no good reason to stay in Scotland over moving to the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland's competitive advantage will be pressed home over the next few decades as well.

Scotland's richest 5% or so will all do fine and will continue to look after themselves but the outlook for "your average Scot" is incredibly bleak, so much so that I feel pretty guilty about never having left and unleashing my kids into an environment where little real opportunity exists.

I think that is a very downbeat assessment of the country. I think we have issues, but we are not alone in that. I have travelled a lot over the last year (making up for cancelled Covid trips). I have seen issues everywhere. Rents in Lisbon have gone up 39% in a year. Family in Dublin who are in tertiary education tell me they can never aspire to buy a house in their home city. Bizarre conjunctions of labour shortages and high youth unemployment in some European countries. Some of is Brexit, but I was startled to see similar issues in EU countries. I asked about why there were labour shortages in the EU countries I visited. A lot was to do with covid. Rather than be locked down in Amsterdam, for example, people just went home and didn't return.I'm sure that will right itself, but it will take time. Is there a lot wrong with the UK just now? Yes. Are other countries a land of milk and honey? Maybe not. And finally I would counsel on there being no opportunity here. I see lots of young people moving from education to good jobs. It not always easy. I think teachers being unable to get a permanant contract is scandalous. But it's really important that we don't simply demoralise young people either.
