Scottish alcohol abuse charity seems all in favour of it.
I’m all for sin taxes to be honest. I only posted the link in relation to everyone claiming the DRS would kill businesses.
I wish all taxes were sin taxes.

Just as an aside. I no longer have words to convey how much I ****ing despise the tories.

As much as I want Scottish independence, I also really hope that the rest of the UK get rid of this lot and never let them come back.
As a York resident, I feel exactly the same.

    And no joke.

There'll be more "on message, impartial" journalists there than there are deportees from the 100 million or so she said were headed for Britain.

A Dim Lizzie style photo opportunity which hopefully ends badly for her.

Who are the 100 million displaced people Suella Braverman said could qualify for UK protection? - Full Fact

i was sure she had said Billions

“There are 100 million people around the world who could qualify for protection under our current laws. Let us be clear - they are coming here.”

She later repeated this claim in the Daily Mail on 8 March, adding that there are “likely billions more eager to come here if possible”.

This time next week it will be trillions, may even stick it on the side of a bus to simultaneously deflect and whip the faithful into a frenzy?

All about the photo opportunities and she's unlikely to be any good at that either.

Just a reminder of what a decade and a bit of Tory rule and their economic prudence actually means for your personal finances:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-64970708

We are living through a period of wage stagnation and thus quality of life stagnation that is historically unprecedented.

I’ve been saying it for years. We are a lot poorer than similar European countries. If it carries on we will start to see young Scots moving to Dublin for the career prospects. Our poor demographics will get worse.

I think Scotland's decline is terminal and inevitable.

There is no good reason to stay in Scotland over moving to the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland's competitive advantage will be pressed home over the next few decades as well.

Scotland's richest 5% or so will all do fine and will continue to look after themselves but the outlook for "your average Scot" is incredibly bleak, so much so that I feel pretty guilty about never having left and unleashing my kids into an environment where little real opportunity exists.

Loyalty to family is the only reason to stay.

I think that is a very downbeat assessment of the country. I think we have issues, but we are not alone in that. I have travelled a lot over the last year (making up for cancelled Covid trips). I have seen issues everywhere. Rents in Lisbon have gone up 39% in a year. Family in Dublin who are in tertiary education tell me they can never aspire to buy a house in their home city. Bizarre conjunctions of labour shortages and high youth unemployment in some European countries. Some of is Brexit, but I was startled to see similar issues in EU countries. I asked about why there were labour shortages in the EU countries I visited. A lot was to do with covid. Rather than be locked down in Amsterdam, for example, people just went home and didn't return.I'm sure that will right itself, but it will take time. Is there a lot wrong with the UK just now? Yes. Are other countries a land of milk and honey? Maybe not. And finally I would counsel on there being no opportunity here. I see lots of young people moving from education to good jobs. It not always easy. I think teachers being unable to get a permanant contract is scandalous. But it's really important that we don't simply demoralise young people either.

Yes because young people are finding buying a house so easy here.
And Dublin isn’t Ireland. The whole of Ireland is more prosperous nowadays.

We've discussed this before. Ireland's GDP is distorted by foreign based companies that repatriate profits. Dublin has a quarter of Ireland's population. Dismissal of issues raised by people who live there is akin to telling them to get on their bike Tebbit style.

We are discussing an article that shows the average UK earnings well below our near neighbours. There is no getting away from that. We are poorer and the situation is getting worse. It’s not me saying it.
