I've seen both sided of the argument the last few days and I'd say newsweek and the guardian both have a point. I don't think anyone thinks they will line up all 15,000 that have been imprisoned for protesting and hang them. It's more the fact that the parliament is recommending they get the full punishment which is death. A shocking way to think of your subjects who have a different of opinion. From the reports we're seeing it's certainly not quelling the riots
Well anyone who has not lived under that regime, believe me they didn't think twice about killing 1500 protesters last time. The more the west highlights this the more likely it is they will back down and just imprison these protesters, but given the chance, which they have now been given, they will literally make these poor protesters line up and they will hang them all. They are talking of Talibanesque public trials! They've already sentenced a Kurdish Iranian rapper to death, they are looking to kill a 15 girl who was giving out sweeties out at a protest. The see themselves are the keepers of Islam and correct in gods eyes so killing 15000 people who insult god with their actions is a no brainer for them. My boss is over there at the moment and there is a lot of anger and resentment towards the government (more than usual), this is not going to go away. But the clerics are still in charge and they are, if reports are to be believed, even killing their own security people who refuse to kill civilians. It is a horrible situation that makes me sick to my stomach.

Wonder how this will go doesn't seem to be subsiding

Protesters have burned down the house in which Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of Iran's Islamic Islamist regime, was born in.

The house, in the city of Khomein, has been a museum for the past 30 years.

The protests are increasing in strength.

Following it on TikTok (seems to be best source for this) and I really hope it’s different this time. The signs appear good. Iran has a very very young population and they appear to be growing in determination. If they are successful in toppling that regime then the implications will be global.

Disinformation being used against the regime? Pleasant change from the norm there.

I’ve no problem with this sort of thing if it galvanises their population and keeps the issue on the news agenda throughout the world.

Anything goes if it means the population can get rid of the regime.

Morality police are disbanding, it's a start but hopefully the protests continue as they were nothing to do with the judiciary

Sign of weakness in the regime. Wonder if a collapse is imminent?

Our anti protest laws are disgusting, but we don't know how fortunate we are to live where we do. Disgusting, iran publicly executes it's second protester

I know what you mean, ie this would be the end of the regime but quite frankly I hope they don't find sanctuary and end up in jail in Iran for the rest of their lives. I would say I hope they end up at the end of a rope like so many of their own citizens have but that would blow my pacifism out the water.

Looks like the Iranian regime needs cash. Has told Syrians no more credit as well, cash only.

Looks like a number of explosions in Iran tonight in multiple locations. Keep a close eye on this.

🔥🔥🔥The explosion, just now, that wiped out the headquarters of Iran’s 🇮🇷 Islamic Revolution Guard Corps is a MASSIVE event which may be a sign that the theocratic Regime’s central authority is going to be targeted next

They won’t need asked twice. Hopefully it doesn’t have an opposite effect of strengthening the regime in face of an attack from abroad.

I think it’s going to have to be. Sadly.
Iran is very different to Russia in that it has a very young population. The chance of a full revolution is much bigger. There is no escape for young Iranians looking for freedom. They can’t head to the capitals of Europe like the Russians do. They are not white enough. So they will stay and fight. Let’s hope the are successful.

    "She has since disappeared"

It takes a lot of courage to do what she did but unfortunately she lives in a country run by a religious sect still living in the Middle Ages.

I’m more hopeful for revolution in Iran than Russia though. Very young population who are very unhappy. We should be doing all we can to help.

One of my mates dad is Iranian and moved back there a few years ago.

He was visiting my mate recently and we had a chat. He is convinced a revolution is coming. He said thanks to social media and the like young people are increasingly aware of what life was like before the Islamic revolution. There has always been an aware because of stories passed down from grandparents and parents but they are now seeing it with their own eyes. Whilst he acknowledges that was no utopia, he argues it was better than the situation right now.

I really have no idea so can't post comment on his view but he is someone who lived in Iran before, during and after the revolution so I trust his judgement to an extent.

A revolution in Iran would have disastrous knock on effects for the whole region and further afield. Syria would be a tea party in comparison.

I’ve no idea why but Iran has always fascinated me. Beruit too. Maybe because of what they used to be. I’d love to visit one day. Can’t see it happening while it’s a theocracy but hopefully that won’t be forever.
