Except he pushed him in his back at his right shoulder, causing him to fall, that's a foul.
I think you are missing my point slightly. You think it's a foul. Some others may disagree. I'm not really saying anyone is right or wrong there.

The ref saw it at close quarters and didn't give a foul. That decision is not a "clear and obvious" error on his part.

You could say that about every decision and every offside.

Isn't every goal checked for possible problems with VAR?

Which is weird. Actively looking for a reason to disallow it, rather than clear and obvious errors.

Ambiguity over what's clear and obvious is what will facilitate even more decisions going Rangers and Celtic's way.

That is guaranteed, as is both of them whining that VAR is cheating them.

Only in Englands approach to VAR which is a total outlier.

The UEFA refs chief talks of a “minimum interference, maximum benefit” approach. That’s what worked well at the Euros and pretty much what you get in Spain and Germany. Only major events that the ref hasn’t seen should be flagged to him by the VAR basically - if it’s something open to interpretation. Offsides are factual.

If the ref has a good view of tackles and basic passages of play, there is no need to ask him to review incidents again. It’s only in England that they do so and that’s why everyone hates VAR

We'll adopt the German method in Scotland.

They're system only asks one question and one question only; "how will this decision benefit Bayern Munich"?

If it does they make the decision. If it doesn't or harms them, no call.

Here We'll do the same except Bayern will be replaced with the old firm.

I'm looking forward to Celtc v Real Madrid tonight. Celtc playing some great football, but tonight they face the ultimate test. It should be a good game; Madrid's class should tell, but Celtc have had some famous nights at Parkhead against world class teams.

A strange position for a socialist like myself to be in, but I hope Franco’s team give them a good pumping.

I quite agree. There is always pleasure to be had when the Old Firm take a European pumping. It reminds them of their place within the bigger picture, when they can't bully Scottish clubs a fraction of their size.

Have you ever read "fear and loathing in la liga" by Sid Lowe?

It explores the Franco / Real Madrid link and comes to the conclusion that Franco supported Real because they were successful, not the other way round.

There were also Republicans and Francoists amongst both Real Madrid and Barcelona supporters. In a civil war that split families and friendships, football clubs were also divided.

There is an interesting story behind how Alfredo di Stefano ended up at Real instead of Barça

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc...l/28204560.amp

Many in Catalunya blame the Barça president more than they blame Franco for that one

I like his contributions on the totally football podcast and I imagine he’s very well informed. They are perceived as representing his regime though, regardless of how accurate it might be.

That's true and Franco was a Real Madrid fan, but there were supporters of the club who fought against the Nationalists, which you would expect in conflict which cut across traditional loyalties. The Civil War still scars Spain today, of course, with older generations still reluctant to discuss it.

By all accounts, Franco wasn't much of a football fan at all. He adopted Madrid because they brought a rare bit of international prestige for Spain in the 50s.

The president of Madrid pre-civil war fought in the Republican defence of the city and ended up exiled in France.

Under 19s playing Real Madrid first team doesn't sound like a fair match 😉

Think Celtic’s centre backs both got booked against Rangers. If they had difficulty in a cakewalk they might be in for a very hard evening.

Chelsea have really dropped their levels this season, Zagreb are all over them, could easily be 3 up.

Celtic or Real Madrid to win? I suppose it boils down to the co-efficient supporters or the ‘hope they get humped’ club. Personally’ I hope they get hammered as anything that undermines their confidence can only be good for our domestic game.

I think I’d like Celtic to get a result. Would be some advert for Scottish football

I don’t think it would ....... it would only further consolidate their superiority and dominance of Scottish football, which does nothing for 10 teams ( I’ll keep Rangers out of the equation ) in the Scottish Premiership.

Hope Celtic get horsed 9 or 10-0. **** them.
