He was better, as were the whole team tbf. I'm getting bored as a Villa fan of seeing pundits talk about how it's a top 8 squad man for man, which I agree with, then going out and playing like a bottom 6 team. They've gone and signed proven champions league players, and somehow Gerrard is turning them into championship players. He's a few losses away from being Villas worst ever coach, statistically.

I agree. Man for man, that team is very, very good. Bailey, Ings, Mcginn, Luiz, Digne, Coutinho, Martinez, Buendia are all players that could and should be playing at the least in the conference league/europa league, but it looks like Gerrard just can't get a tune out of them.

Buendia has been Villas best player for about 6 months but he can't get a start. Gerrard was asked about it and snapped back something about "I pick the team, you dont".

I can't remember the stat but he's lost over 50% of his games, only managers to worse his record is Remi Garde and Tim Sherwood.

Villa don't play McGinn in his best position so they're not going to get the best out of him.

He's been playing as a #8 for a while now, his best role. He's got plenty freedom to get forward he just looks shot of any confidence. It's not where he's playing, it's a case of a good player in a rut and the manager refusing to take him out if the firing line for a few weeks.

I don't think John needs replaced or anything, I just think it's obvious to all Villa fans he's struggling and could do with a few weeks out of the firing line, for his own sake.

The players you mentioned all good enough for Europe but it’s looking like villa are still a couple players short,I think mcginn could do with another player in there with him to bounce off,too much expectation and the rest of that midfield looks pretty attacking in style.
Maybe another centre mid to share the duties.

Signed Kamara as a #6 and he's been one of the only bright lights this season. The midfield is a very decent one, Ramsay, Luiz and Mcginn are all very good #8s. It's a confidence thing for John, and tactical from Gerrard
