No problems there in my new job. I'm rarely more than 20 minutes between deliveries and the workshops I deliver to have decent facilities. The only exception is one night a week away from home and that's spent in a hotel.

If your asked to re-apply for your job as a new company has taken over does this mean any ‘unsuccessful’ applicants in effect lose there job? Any staff with long service wouldn’t get redundancy packages?

I knew a couple of guys who didn't want to work for the new company so they failed in their applications and got redundancy payments.

Thanks there’s a rumour around my workplace about this happening end of year I’ve got it in my head it’s prime chance for them to rid themselves of the bigger redundancy cheques for further down the line but I don’t know enough about the process never had to do it before

i think there’s a few factors, a big one being, what kind of redundancy package are they planning/expected to offer? Statutory redundancy has a cap I think, which means there’s a point at which they should know their redundancy payouts can’t grow any bigger. If they offered an enhanced redundancy package, that will increase, potentially significantly. Length of service is a factor, so is the age of the person(s) being made redundant.

In regards to your first question, being asked to reapply for your job would constitute being put into a collective consultation, which has very specific guidelines on timeframes, and information that must be provided. Anyone who is unsuccessful would be eligible for a redundancy payout, which starts at a minimum of statutory redundancy. In a collective consultation, they may not ask people to reapply, they may produce or ask the group affected to produce a plan for reducing the numbers to the level they want, or ask for volunteers for voluntary redundancy (again showing what the redundancy package can look like).

We’ve already had a ‘round’ of volunteers during the first lockdown, now there has been a takeover and work has only returned to 61% of pre covid levels, personally I’ve really only been hanging around the last year or 2 in the hope of a redundancy package as I have a long service my worry was this is a perfect opportunity for the new company to just say ‘I’m sorry you no longer have a job’ without paying out.

my dad was made redundant last year, after 35 years service, but with the cap on statutory redundancy, his package was pretty poor in reflection of his time there.

That is an interesting question. In reality an employer can make an employee redundant by making his or her position redundant.

This happened to me 11 years ago. I was called into a meeting with no idea what was going on until I was told that the new director of sales did not see a future for me going forward.

No explanation of due process, why me etc. I was offered what looked like obligatory final pay plus a bit extra plus 3 months of company car.

They paid for me to see a solicitor and to sign a ' compromise settlement ' ie a confidentiality contract. The solicitor was a gem and we settled on their FOURTH offer ie

one full years pay plus car for 6 months.

Maybe redundancy law has changed, I am not sure but my point is to stretch the pay off as far as possible because the employer will do anything to stop a tribunal into

unfair redundancy.

I found out later that the manager who delivered the news to me was him/herself not in a secure position via missing out on a promotion so they made my position redundant

for six months then he/she took up my job under a new title.

Zwei Dumme, eine Gedanke

After starting a new job last autumn, today I finished up, and start a new job with another company on Tuesday.

the place I’ve just left, whilst some of the people are great and I’ve genuinely enjoyed their company, the organisation itself is really quite frighteningly archaic. It was like working in the early 90s, little embracing of technology and even less appetite for adopting it. Any change is forced upon them. Coupled with very little structure, I decided I needed to Change before the frustration really set in and began to drag me down. I described the last 8 months as like watching a bunch of wee boys playing football, with all of them stampeding after the ball, that’s what my workload looked and felt like no planning or preparation or structure
each dept, each day, the plan felt like ‘let’s just get to lunchtime and see where we are’, followed by ‘ok, let’s get to the end of the day and see where we are tomorrow, repeat daily.

that all said, as mentioned, I met some great people, many of whom I will keep in touch with, got to learn about a new industry and got another opportunity to see if my skills are transferable (they are). And now I’m looking forward to working in a company where I think I can make a positive impact, my new boss seems great and invested in her people.

if anyone is in a job they feel unhappy in, please, don’t just exist in it and plod on. Ask yourself if you can make positive changes to what you do (I tried and it was made clear it wouldn’t happen, they weren’t interested in modernising or seeing what was happening in the outside world), or seek something that will give you more fulfilment 😊
