What have the Conservatives conserved in this country? In my lifetime all they have done is; sell the nations' infrastrcture off, fractured working class communities and institutions, rendered the middle classes shopa/dopaholics, auctioned the capital city off for roubles, applied trade tariffs to our own businesses, atrophied wages 'cos its fine for bankers to be greedy, radically increase toffs' wealth in proportion to everyone else, renaged on internal investment in favour of the offshore candy mountain, made popularity a more important qualification for office than competency, are in the process of dismantling any kind of reputation for professional decorum our parliament had.

    What are they preserving?

Sad to see him go. I liked the solicitor general. Much better than the attorney…

Fair dooz. I will say though that even when he is sober he's rarely sober.

He is pretty incoherent at best of times…. Not seen him for a while but he used to take breaks in Bamburgh and get pissed most nights

Looks like Johnson is going to hang on, but a dead man walking. The men in suits will hopefully be making moves behind the scenes.

Don’t know who it is as I missed the start of it but some poor minion set out to bat for Bozo on LBC getting torn limb from limb by the usually limp Tom Sawbrick. Really difficult day or two ahead for a lot of ministers.

Edit: it’s Zahawi and he’s falling apart like a cheap suit.

I've always thought Zahawi is one of the poorest performers on TV, to the point where you almost start to feel sorry for him. But even the Guardian has him down as a 'solid performer' and don't bracket him with the much mocked Dorries or the much loathed Patel. Almost as if he's an acceptable candidate

He’s about to turn on the spending and tax cutting taps big time. The pound will collapse even further and the inflation we have just now will seem mild in comparison.

I genuinely think he’ll be worse than Trump in terms of clinging on. I could see the military having to step in to remove him as I just can’t seem him going even if he loses an election.

Arguably the most significant resignation yet, unusually I don't think he ever told a lie.

Yes, some will be after high spending. Martin Kettle got this bit spot on

Johnson’s Conservatism is highly unusual, a rag-bag of high spending, government intervention and English nationalism. It has little connection with the low tax, small state, globally liberal Toryism that preceded it and which the party cast aside when it rushed to embrace Johnson as the answer to its problems. If and when Johnson goes, his form of Toryism may go too. But what will come next?

...thats the interesting bit. We might be seeing the break up of the party as we know it, similar to the recalibration that happened in France when the traditional two centre-right centre-left parties imploded and Macron walked into the void.

Running total now up to 15. Surely they change rules tonight and force him out.

They are meeting tonight to discuss that, I read. Could be a vote next week

I think if they manage to change the rules tonight then he either resigns or tries for a GE. He knows he can’t win vote next week.
Will be fascinating to see if he goes for a GE. Resigning just doesn’t seem in his character.

He could then run with the rhetoric that it was those pesky backstabbing colleagues of his that lost him the election.

I don't think he'd want to, if a lot of them lost their seats he can choose to stick with the story that it was their disloyalty that cost him an election and he can look the hero. If it's his own people he doesn't have that.

    It's what he does.

Javid making a statement in the Commons later. For those of old enough to remember Geoffrey Howe’s speech and how it finished off Thatcher, I wonder if it will be the same impact
