When they vote later today they will not be voting for what's best for the country or even the tory party, they will be voting for what they think is best for themselves. Longer term I think a Johnson win tonight might be no bad outcome.

The next calamity is only a couple of weeks away at most. Whilst he seems able to shake off a lot of things individually, the cumulative effect is starting to prove troublesome for him. His incompetence, lying and flip flopping is increasingly an electoral liability for the Tories.

If they replace him with someone who is evil but competent that could still see an election victory against a powder puff opposition. Another couple of **** ups, make the job even more toxic and get some utter buffoon (and there's no shortage of them lining up) in there a few months before an election.

Seemingly May had her majority publically declared by lunchtime. I still think he'll squeak through this but it's another big wound. Then he's got the by-elections to lose later this month. Then the Commons inquiry into partygate.

I get the strategic "keep him around to make sure they lose the GE" position but I'd rather have him gone just so I don't have to see his smug, entitled pus ever again (unless it's torn faced and broken, which it will be permanently once the enormity of his failure sinks in.)

Also, he's one day short of Gordon Brown's stint in office, so if he gets the boot tonight, he'd be the shortest serving PM since Anthony "Suez" Eden.

He has a choice, resign or call a GE and let the people decide. James Callaghan lost a Motion of no confidence in '79 and he asked the Queen to dissolve parliament and trigger a GE and we all know how that went! Different rules now but same principle.
