    11/3/1967 Scottish Cup Round 3

    Hibernian 1 v 1 Aberdeen

    Stevenson 16

Aberdeen were a dour team and set up defensively for this fixture They had to resort to plan B when Eric Stevenson crashed a left footed shot high past Bobby Clark from 18 yards on the quarter hour

“In the next round a real blood and thunder clash against Aberdeen I scored possibly the best goal of my career Receiving a one two from Pat Quinn just inside the box I hesitated briefly before crashing a thunderous first time left foot drive past Bobby Clark into his top left hand corner for my first ever goal in the Scottish Cup “

    Hibernian 4 v 2 Dundee

    Reilly 2

    Johnstone

A horror show from young Dundee goalkeeper Bill Brown handed HIBS the points

For the first he clashed with Lawrie Reilly pulling his jersey back the ball broke free and trickled over the line the Referee decided to dispense with the penalty and awarded the goal The second a hopeful cross from Gordon Smith sailed over his head and in off the back post The third he allowed a tame shot from Reilly to squirm from his grasp and over the line

Dundee pulled a goal back through Gerrie but their hopes of a revival were crushed when Bobby Johnstone added a fourth

Gerrie scored a late consolation for Dundee to make the score more respectable

Bill Brown would go on to have a distinguished career with Dundee Tottenham Hotspur and Scotland winning the Scottish League Cup, English First Division, 2 x FA Cups, 2 x Charity Shields and the ECWC

    Halligan 43

In arranging for a five o’ clock kick off HIBS Manager Alec Maley was taking a gamble with the weather He was rewarded for his optimism as the light held out Not only were the conditions perfect but a crowd of over 20000 turned out

HIBS ran amok and led by three at half time with counters from ‘Darkie’ Walker, Jimmy McColl and Johnny Halligan

In the second half Jimmy McColl added a fourth as Hibernian set about their work with renewed vigour and always looked certain winners even if they continued to miss chances at the rate they had been doing The score was not at all flattering to the Irishmen who with better finishing the final score would have been overwhelming

Hibs had defeated Renton 2-1 in the semi-final but Renton put in a protest and the SFA after completing their investigation only informed HIBS 24 hours before kick off that the result was upheld and that they would be playing in the Scottish Cup Final

Hibs kicked off with the sun in their eyes but one could tell that the strain of the three week long protest and court case had taken its toll on the players as they appeared to be suffering from over anxiety and seemed unable to go about their normal business

No complaints though the better team on the day won even although their first two goals had a huge element of fluke about them The first a soft penalty - ball to hand- the taker hit the ball straight at the goalkeeper that he unwittingly helped over the line The second the goalkeeper attempted to clear but only helped the ball into the net The third was a well taken headed goal

Lawrie played at least one more game-in the league against Rangers on the Monday before the cup final when he scored in a 3-1 victory. If he had to stop then scoring against the team who had been our greatest competitors in his career was a great way to do it.
We were a bit lucky against Third Lanark. I think we were down 2-1 and struggling when Joe sent in a hopeful(hopeless to be honest)lob.Fortunately Jocky Robertson was by a long way the smallest goalie in the league and fumbled it into the net.Cheered up by that Joe beat a couple of defenders on the bye line and laid it on a plate for Fraser.
Third Lanark knocked us out of the cup the following season.

I attended this game and I still remember vividly the huge travelling HIBS support and standing behind John Leslie in the queue waiting to get in singing ‘Hibeees here! Hibees there!’ It was also the day of the famous Grand Slam Calcutta Cup match at Murrayfield

Hibs started brightly and Brian Hamilton rattled the United crossbar from 20 yards in the ninth minute That was the closest HIBS came all afternoon as that old fox Jim McLean had recalled John Clark to shackle Houchy who never got a sniff and pushed Miodrag Krivokapic into midfield to stifle the threat from John Collins

The United tactics of playing the long ball from defence up to Mixu Paatelainen and Darren Jackson worked a treat when Jackson received a Freddy Van Der Hourn free kick in the box with his back to goal and somehow managed to scoop the ball over his shoulder into the roof of the net

There was a near riot when in the first minute of the game a Rangers cross glanced the crossbar and was cleared by the HIBS defence only for the Referee to award a goal

Things calmed down when Jimmy Dunn scored a beautiful goal to equalise five minutes later

Every HIBS player was a hero that day but Jimmy Dunn was a super-hero when with only ten minutes to go he crashed home an unstoppable winner

    Dundee 2 v 2 Hibernian

    Callachan 2

Cammy Fraser opened the scoring on 19 minutes with a 25 yard screamer on a warm sunny spring day at Dens Park

Bertie Auld commented at half-time that he would still be playing if he had the time and space afforded to Fraser

Into the second half and in 55 minutes Arthur Duncan won a loose ball in midfield and released a cross field pass to the onrushing Ralph Callachan who galloped through and drew Bobby Geddes before shooting home

Fraser rattled the HIBS post with another one of his specials before HIBS went 2-1 up in 71 minutes
Bobby Flavell crossed and Ralph Callachan headed in bravely so bravely that he was stretchered off with a suspected broken jaw

HIBS then stopped playing and gave away a preventable corner in 87 minutes from which Dundee substitute Ray Stephen headed powerfully home at the far post

1998 Alex McLeish wins his first game in charge at Easter Road at the fifth time of asking against his former club Motherwell

Ironically it was McLeish’s Motherwell’s 6-2 victory over HIBS at Fir Park that cost Jim Duffy his job

McLeish recruited former Scotland goalie Bryan Gunn and Man United starlet Grant Brebner for a doomed relegation dog fight but ultimately HIBS would bounce back up to the top flight the following season

    1973

Eddie Turnbull’s underachieving Tornadoes go crashing out of the European Cup Winners Cup 0-3 ( 4-5 on aggregate) to Croatia’s Hajduk Split at the quarter final stage

Many of the Split side would be in the Yugoslavia World Cup squad that would help knock Scotland out of the 1974 tournament

Former Scotland goalkeeper Jim Herriot had an uncharacteristic nightmare as he miscalculated two high balls to the back post that ended up in the HIBS net also compounded by a John Blackley own goal

Hibs would regret the two goals conceded at Easter Road in the first leg 4-2 win

Herriot would not play for HIBS again

So many things wrong with the Hadjuk Split game. Firstly, Jimmy O’Rourke was left on the bench. Unforgivable. Purple strip, white sleeves, unbelievable. But it was the goals we lost in the first leg at ER that really cost us.
This was a team that could and should have won so much more than a League Cup and couple of Dryburgh Cups.

Turnbull used to drop O'Rourke regularly-replacing him with a succession of huddies of which Higgins was the biggest.

Posted on a disliked hibs player thread as my most disliked

Stood 6’4” jumped 5’10” couldnae slip a pink news under his feet

Legs like tree trunks and slower than a week in the jail

Was skilful for a big guy with twinkle toes and scored a lot of useful goals for us but to me it was always O’Rourke and Gordon

    Nice enough big guy though

    22/3/1902 Scottish Cup Semi Final

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Rangers

    Divers
    McCartney

30000 packed ‘neutral’ Ibrox for this Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers

Hibs took a big support with 1500 leaving Waverley Station to be joined by many more Irishmen through in the West

Things looked ominous for HIBS as they were without injured defenders Barney Breslin, Jimmy Hogg and Hamilton Handling

Hibs started off on the offensive and took the game to Rangers

We are told that Rangers could not handle the pace and trickery of Billy McCartney so kicked and hacked him to the ground

Similarly the same could be said about Andy McGeachan but the Rangers defence could not catch him as he wove his way past the blue jerseys with great speed

Hibs scored but the goal was disallowed for offside

Hibs’ pressure paid off when Johnny Divers scored The Rangers defence again protested for offside but this time the Referee would hear none of it and awarded the goal Indeed the Ref was getting braver as he awarded HIBS a penalty that Divers scooped over the crossbar

In the second half the HIBS support started to find their voice as they could sense a great victory spurring on the green jerseys at every opportunity singing and waving their green flags

HIBS had another goal disallowed before McCartney once again took the ball on a mazy run beating man after man and slotting home a perfectly legitimate second

This insolence made McCartney a marked man and minutes later he was carried from the field of play on a stretcher his leg broken in two above the ankle

Billy McCartney had been earmarked to play for Scotland in the forthcoming international versus England

Andy McGeachan was fortunate to leave the field of play without serious injury

‘Hibernian were the far better team both in combined play and individual skills Hibernian humiliated Rangers but even worse the Scottish Champions humiliated themselves with their rough unsportsmanlike play’

Having defeated Rangers in the semifinals at Ibrox Hibernian would win the Scottish Cup in this season defeating Celtic at Parkhead

    Glory! Glory !
