Back in Edinburgh those who had not travelled to the final received updates on the score by telegraph to establishments such as Paddy McGrails shop 266 Canongate and Higgins Football Arms Hill Place

The news of the victory spread like wildfire through Little Ireland St Mary’s Street Halls became a hive of activity as the CYMS made last minute preparations for the reception of their victorious football team

The pubs and the streets were mobbed with deliriously happy Irish and the paper boys at the Tron and Register House did a roaring trade

Word was received that the team would arrive at Waverley at 10.00pm The station was completely taken over by the cheering throng who carried the Hibernian party shoulder high to a special horse drawn break which was draped with two large banners one proclaiming ‘Welcome Hibernian Winners of the Scottish Cup 1886-87’ and the other ‘God Save Ireland-Hurrah for the Green Jerseys’

Two flute bands the CYMS and the Leith Harp played patriotic Irish tunes and led the break along with the whole mass of supporters out of the station Edinburgh’s non Irish citizens watched in amazement at the antics of the procession as it made its way onto Waverley Bridge along Princes Street and over the North Bridge to the Tron where another immense crowd with the Young Ireland flute band were waiting to welcome them into Little Ireland

With bands playing fans singing and flags flying the parade made its way down the High Street and into St Mary’s Street which glowed eerily from the green limelights that had been placed in every window of every tenement in the Street

A special reception was held in St Mary’s Street Halls where over 1000 members were waiting for the Guests of Honour

Rangers equalised when Tommy Younger punched the ball into his own net following a cross from McCulloch under pressure from Willie Woodburn

A section of one of them caved at a Hibs game. Late 80's maybe early 90's. They tried to blame the Hibs fans at the time. Couldn't have been their fault, nothing is.

I remember a game ,maybe same one, where the brickwork from the wall surrounding the exit steps/path collapsed.
It had,i think, been pouring with rain all day and it was raining heavy during the game.
Possibly water undermined the founds of the wall. But it was not vandalism.
A wee fright at the time, but no panic, iirc.

Hibs were out the cup and Moscow Dynamo were on a winter break so why not ?

Dynamo were a decent side and got to the semi-final of the ECWC in this season

What I remember of the game is that the Dynamo defenders could not handle the power and pace of the force that was Gordon Juke Box Durie who fired in two first-half goals on a cold Friday night

    15/2/1896 Scottish Cup Round 3

    Rangers 2 v 3 Hibernian

    Smith
    Breslin
    Groves

This game was a real old-fashioned Cup tie with a lot of good football particularly from Hibernian with Rangers indulging in brutal play

Hibs took the lead to the great joy of their large travelling support when Willie Smith scored Rangers were rattled and they became even wilder when a Barney Breslin free-kick found it’s way into the Ibrox net to renewed manifestations of delight from the HIBS support

Rangers were stung into action and their brutal play was being ignored by the Referee Rangers pulled a goal back and the Referee gave them their obligatory penalty but the spot kick was blasted over the bar

The Referee continued to protect Rangers into the second half and they got their equaliser Hibernian’s play however had been superior and they were determined not to let this match slip from their grasp

It is now that ‘Darling’ Willie Groves grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck going on one of his old mazy runs the Rangers defence hacked and kicked at him and ‘almost killed him’ but with his last ounce of strength he put Hibernian back into the lead with a glorious goal that he managed to steer over the goal-line

The action was not over however and you guessed it the weak Referee - Mr McArthur of Stirling- awarded Rangers another soft penalty but this time HIBS’ goalkeeper Pat McCall pulled off a brilliant save to finally knock the stuffing out of Rangers

After the match the Rangers goalkeeper Bell got changed walked down the Copeland Road and was never seen or heard of again

Re the Jimmy O hat trick in cup against St J in 1974 I'm pretty sure Joe Harper wasn't ineligible, he was dropped. No surprise really after his sluggish, overweight debut the week before. The Gordon/O'Rourke partnership was restored and Jimmy did the business!

    Try to be objective here.

The dugs in the street knew then that Jimmy was good enough to remain in the team.
But Ned had other ideas. As you know Brian,it broke Jimmy's heart the day he left The Holy Ground.

I notice a few history posts from Billy refer to former player,Gordon Durie and his nickname.

When Jimmy was assistant to Pat Stanton, along with George Stewart,Jimmy had nicknames for a few of the youngsters.
Durie was one of that fine crop.
It goes back to older family members in the Grassmarket who had a habit of often using rhyming slang when chatting.
    Jimmy used it sometimes.
So Gordon Durie got called "Juke Box" ,after the TV music quiz show of the sixties, Juke Box Jury..and it appears to have stuck to this day.

I remember those days well Michael. I used to meet Jimmy and the boys in Pearces after the game. I even ended up on the bench briefly for 1 game!! We had the 2 full backs Brown and Farmer at that time. Jimmy deliberately listed them in wrong order so announcer had to say Farmer Brown! Some fun times!

Merouane Zemmama equalised on 49 minutes with a free-kick following a Diamond foul on Colin Nish kissing the ball before dispatching it past Jamie Langfield from 25 yards

HIBS now had their tails up and Dean Shiels scored from a tight angle after being put clean through on goal by Steven Fletcher his first attempt having been saved by Langfield

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Ayr United

    Lambie
    Macleod

    Dearie me!

I can still feel the sense of massive disappointment when the PA announced before kick off that #11 would be Willie Murray

15000 like minded souls had gathered (and it seemed like more) for a Sunday afternoon Scottish Cup tie in the days before wall to wall live streaming and Sky Sports

This was of course the weekend of his infamous drinking session with the French Rugby team and George Best would be put up for sale in the morning

The match itself was a good old fashioned competitive Cup tie with Ayr United putting up a good show played in the best spirit of the game with Duncan Lambie and Ally MacLeod scoring either side of half-time

Ayr had some decent players Steve Nicol, Robert Connor and Jim McSherry indeed Robert Connor is still convinced to this day that a first half strike that cannoned off the underside of the crossbar bounced miles over the line

    17/2/1951 Scottish League Division One

Kings Park were a senior team from Stirling who unfortunately did not survive the war Their Forthbank Stadium was damaged by a 2000lb Hermann bomb dropped from a Luftwaffe plane in 1941

From the ashes of Kings Park would rise Stirling Albion Football Club in 1945

We left ER gutted that night after the arabs equalised in stoppage time. I think it was Ally Brazil who tried a pass back and gave away a needless corner when all that was required was a hoof out the park.

We went up for the replay and were hammered 3-0.

Funny how the mind plays tricks on you, I knew it was 3-0, I had it in my head it was at Tannadice, I also thought the game was over pretty early. I probably still had a hangover from that first replay, we really should have won it that night.

What was the tie we lost on pens to them?

Remember McLean seemingly just telling the ref they would be taken down at the Dunbar end.

    18/2/2017 Scottish League Championship

    Raith Rovers 1 v 1 Hibernian

    Cummings 60

New Raith Rovers Manager John Hughes got a standing ovation as he took his seat in the Starks Park dug out

Ex Hearts midfielder Ryan Stevenson gave Raith the lead after 54 minutes when he rifled in a half volley from 22 yards into the top corner of the net. Jason Cummings equalised six minutes later with a wonderful free-kick from just outside the box

HIBS extended their lead at the top of the table to seven points with an admittedly insipid performance that brought this response from Manager Neil Lennon:

”We were an absolute disgrace- a disgrace We had the right colour of jersey on ( yellow) today You can’t turn up and play for 30 minutes We were abject We are going for a title here and trying to extend our lead but we totally disrespected the opponent I am not happy with that at all and that is creeping in far too often “

    Scott 42

30000 fans turned up at Easter Road many expecting an upset and to witness Hibernian take on little Berwick Rangers who had knocked out big Rangers at home in the previous round

Many were to leave disappointed as Jim Scott scored the only goal of the game just before half-time
Berwick Rangers’ goalkeeper and Captain Jock Wallace saved a Jim Scott penalty in the latter stages of the match

Berwick had fought bravely but in truth were never in the match and kicked everything that moved HIBS were the better side and had the bulk of the play but Berwick thought they had scored when Thomson Allan clawed away a ball that appeared to have crossed the line half way through the first half

Jim Scott scored with a speculative shot from 20 yards that Wallace appeared to have covered but miscalculated the flight of the ball went down like a carthorse and the ball flew into the empty net

Eric Stevenson relates in his biography that Jock Wallace had told his marker Gordon Haig “ If Stevie goes for a piss at half-time you go with him”

Berwick Rangers left the field of play to a standing ovation in recognition of a gallant cup run in which they had showed determination and true grit but had also played some good football and did not look out of place against higher League opposition
