Bobby Hutchinson headed HIBS ahead after only two minutes from Ally MacLeod’s cross. Strikes from Ian Clinging and Mike Larnach gave Motherwell the lead before Ally MacLeod equalised from the penalty spot. With time running out Motherwell were awarded a penalty kick but Mike McDonald brilliantly dived to his left to save Peter Marinello’s low effort. This seemed to galvanise HIBS and with two minutes remaining Gordon Rae accepted Ralph Callachan’s square pass and dispatched a rising drive into the top right hand corner to secure all three points for HIBS

    Cormack
    Zoco og

Jock Stein gave the fans a taste of what they might expect under his tenure when he invited European Champions Cup runners up Real Madrid to Easter Road for a Challenge Match

30000 HIBS fans turned up to witness a masterclass performance as HIBS put on a superb display with our very own Willie Hamilton and Pat Quinn dominating a Real midfield that included the legendary Ferenc Puskas

Before the game Jock Stein showed his players on a blackboard the tactics he wanted them to employ but things turned out even better than he had anticipated when 18 year old Peter Cormack scored with a drive after 13 minutes and Pat Quinn had a free kick deflected into his own net by a defender in the second half

Hibs found themselves taken unawares by the quality and all round good play of a second division Morton team that put them under pressure and played superbly for 90 minutes scoring after only three minutes through Alan McGraw thanks to an uncharacteristic error from veteran goalkeeper Ronnie Simpson

Thereafter it was a rearguard action where the defence and in particular Ronnie Simpson performed admirably

Neil Martin equalised in the first half and later broke his wrist but was able to see out the 90 minutes

Hibs were outfought on the day but would live to fight another day a young Pat Stanton missing a glorious chance to steal the tie at the death

I grew up near Mervyn and his brother Davy. Used to see their uncle John about their house a lot.
Davy went on to play for East Fife and he was a Rangers fan.
Mervyn I believe was gutted to get a free from Hibs (so were a lot of Hibs fans)

Here's a funny thing. Before the Malmo nightmare at ER I was waiting outside the FF stand and there was Mervyn, Davy and their families all decked out in the Hibs colours!
    It was nice to see.

9/10/1985 Scottish League Cup Semi Final

    Rangers 1 v 0 Hibernian ( Agg 1-2)

8500 HIBS supporters made their way along the M8 to see if their team could hold onto the 2-0 lead HIBS had established in the first leg at Easter Road

Thanks to delays on the motorway many fans would miss the opening goal scored by Davy Cooper after half an hour an excellently executed free kick from the edge of the box that flew into Alan Rough’s top right postage stamp corner.

Hibernian stalwart Gordon Rae was booked in the build up to the free kick when he pulled down Ally McCoist outside the box a booking that meant he would miss the final against Sir Alex Ferguson’s all conquering Aberdeen

Hibs managed to hold on due to some excellent defending and goalkeeping and were always dangerous on the counterattack and could easily have scored an away goal as the Rangers defence could not handle the strength and pace of a young Gordon Durie all that was required at times was a wee bit composure in front of goal

9/10/1968 Scottish League Cup Semi Final

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Dundee

    Stein
    McGraw

A rip roaring old fashioned Cup tie at a packed Tynecastle

George McLean gave Dundee the lead after only six minutes to silence the large HIBS support. Colin Stein equalised almost immediately with what was to be his last goal for the club

The game went from end to end with if truth be told Dundee looking the more likely

Into the second half and Bob Shankly decided to beef up our attack by taking off midfielder Pat Quinn and replacing him with pocket battleship Jimmy O’Rourke. Disaster struck however minutes later when Alan McGraw had to be stretchered off with a serious leg injury leaving HIBS down to ten men with 15 minutes remaining

With five minutes to go and extra time looming Alan McGraw reappeared to huge cheers from the HIBS fans with a huge strapping on his injured left knee. Barely able to run McGraw had been introduced as nuisance value hoping to tie up a defender

With seconds to go HIBS won a corner out on our left Jimmy O’Rourke swung in an inswinging cross that was somehow twice cleared off the line by desperate Dundee defenders but McGraw who looked incapable of movement managed to lunge forward and force the ball over the line past the stranded Dundee goalkeeper Ally Donaldson with his injured knee

With virtually no time left for Dundee to respond pandemonium broke out both on and off the park as HIBS realised they were actually going to a cup final for the first time in 18 years

Hibs: Wilson Shevlane Davis Cousin Stanton McGraw Scott Quinn Stein Cormack and Stevenson

    Sub:O’Rourke

    Att 19572

Footnote: Eric Stevenson tells the story that HIBS were on £50 a man to qualify for the final and after the game he was walking along Princes Street with Willie Wilson heading towards the East End in order to catch a bus or a train back to Wallyford and Bonnyrigg anyway they walked into a bar full of hibbies and in true western style Willie suddenly announced “ The drinks are on me!”

HIBS went to Ibrox in confident mood sitting proudly at the top of the table after having already defeated both Celtic and Hearts

Manager Willie MacFarlane got the players to swap jerseys prior to kick off with instructions to confuse the Rangers defenders even further during the game by interchanging positions.

Eric Stevenson grabbed the number 9 jersey and kicked off as centre forward.

Rangers debutante fullback Brian Herron couldn’t handle the pace and ball wizardry of Peter Marinello as he ran through the middle of the Rangers defence in the centre forward position - ripping them a new one and scoring two first half goals. Willie Johnston replying for Rangers.
