Their support tonight carried him over the line. There's a lot of love there.

That’s why the poster said ‘initially’.

There’s no question Murray was less popular early doors than his compatriots.

Now he benefits from a wave of empathy/sympathy because of his injuries and the whole battling back narrative.

Henman fitted into the Wimbledon environment like a glove, Murray’s had to learn a different path.

Again, I'm not sure there would be much difference if Scotland had beaten Germany yesterday and were the only Home Nations team left. In those (admittedly unlikely) circumstances would we take such exception to an English commentator saying things like a Ukrainian injury could be good news for Scotland, or indeed referencing Scotland's great win over Germany earlier that day? I suspect a Scottish commentary team would be making just the same sort of observations.
We are not talking about a one off we are talking year after year after year.

Can remember in one of his earlier years not long after the Sun done him over a fan shouting out to the other player to win it for England even though the player was French Murray fought back and won it in 5 the hero he is.

I have lived here for thirty years too, pretty much got over the England thing on here years ago as I began to realise that some of the points raised are pretty valid. Each to their own but the tone of some of your responses is bound to provoke a similar response just as it would if you said it face to face. I love the banter on here regarding England and Scotland and pretty much never get myself wound up about it anymore though I admit I used to. I respect that I am posting on a Scottish football forum and if I post GIRUY Scotland which I rarely do these days then I fully understand and accept the response it will receive..

    Now......who can still boogie

They love him and he clearly loves them. He’s been through pretty grim stuff to get to play there again and you can see he’s in his element.

I’m not over thinking it, I was taking pleasure in tonight. I tend to do that with sport, I relax and enjoy it.

The love and respect was earned by becoming one of the greatest (if not the greatest) British sports stars of all time (and brilliant role model to boot), not because of his injuries.

Goes back to the early stages of his career when Murray joked he'd support any except England, took him a few years to get them back on his side.

You could argue though that with Scotland having been absent from major tournaments for so long we don't really know whether our pundits would be any less partisan.

Personally I just thought that after 55 years of major tournament failure against the Germans (arguably England's greatest football rivals bearing in mind how rarely they play Scotland) and 18 months where good news stories have been rare the English pundits/media were entitled to go a bit OTT.

Definitely bowing out of this debate now ;-)

Just saying what most true football fans would say.

“Bristolhibby, I presume you will be wanting Hearts to win the Cup Final this year?”

    Seriously, that’s the same question.

Andy answered it as all on here would answer it.

An older more polished AM would have said with a wry smile, “of course I want England to do well”, have a wee wink and leave it at that.

The (English)football podcast I listen to led with ‘if you need a break from all of the England euphoria, or at least some perspective, here’s a look back on Euro 2008 in our Euro stories series…’

I get the feeling that there’s plenty of English people who also agree with most Scots’ assertion that the English sports media go overboard, and probably uniquely so.

I've only seen it twice back but I think he was very unfortunate to see red too actually

Obviously the freeze frame is horrible but you could do that with alot of tackles

Yes it was sore and I was feeling a wee bit delicate. No football for a while now so I will reflect (after reading back my earlier posts) and try to be a better person and not talk too much p*sh.

freakin appalling the abuse this wee lassie got on social media, Xenophobic runts

Euro 2021: Disgust after crying young German fan attacked online during England vs Germany | The Independent

obviously the worst has been left out

Their excitement was criticised as was their lack of grace in winning, as supporters at Wembley booed the German national anthem, sang inappropriate songs and cheered and laughed at a clip of a young German girl crying as her team looked set to lose the game.

I noticed cheering at the time but hoped it was because Muller was going off. I had a horrible feeling it wasn't though.

Agree he's won the majority over, I think the emotion he showed from his Wimbledon win plus playing up to his reputation for being dour and making a joke of it helped. I was meaning earlier in his career.

It was the emotion he displayed after losing the 2012 Wimbledon final to Federer that swung it. Helped, shortly after, by winning Olympic gold for the UK.

Yeah actually, I forgot about that final (was it really 2012? God I'm old). Regardless he's definitely a fan favourite now and deservedly so.

A Wales football supporter has raised hundreds of pounds for a little German fan cruelly mocked online after England’s victory over Germany at Wembley.
The little girl was the subject of shameful abuse after she was pictured crying on television and on the big screen at the stadium.

I find this a really depressing story, for a number of reasons....

    1. Why do the TV companies continue to think showing children crying is a good idea? That's been happening for a good while now, and it serves no positive purpose at all. I'm not saying that they should be *banned* from showing stuff like that, but surely human decency dictates that there's no need.
    2. The fans that cheered, or got involved in the online comments need a good boot up the *rse.
    3. I'm not really sure how giving the child £1000 is going to make a difference. What's she going to do with that, buy a big **** off teddy bear? Or, more likely, an iPhone? It's not as if she's likely to be massively hard up given her family managed to take her to Wembley.

The whole thing is a nice wee illustration on how ****ed up our society is. Nobody seems to be pulling people in points 1 and 2 up for being utter tools, and the way to 'fix' it is to throw money at a wee girl?

    I despair.
