Personally I think he’s a really good player who has had a dip in for
due to being played left mid and fitness catching up on him.

If he played as part of a central 2, box to box and with a full pre season in him he’d be fantastic Imo.
It’s strange that JR continues to play midfielders out on the left to be honest. Has done it with magennis and done it with Irvine a few times. They’re both quite clearly CM’s.

I actually reckon we’ll see a big change over the summer. I think those who’ve been linked with moves away will go (Boyle, Nisbet, Porteous & Doig) and I’m not sure if irvine will sign a new contract.

Don’t necessarily see the above as being a big problem because I trust JR to replace them. Maybe only Boyle I’d have reservations about because most of our good play goes through him.

Could be an exciting summer hopefully

It’d be outrageous if we let Aberdeen get Irvine. Absolutely outrageous.

Significantly more embarrassing than the Ojo, McCrorie debacles, given we already have him.

Hopefully we see some positive moves this week. Signing Griffiths and tying Irvine down long term would certainly help lift the mood amongst fans, which is depressingly low.

Has Irvine done much for us?

I'd rather sign players that will definitely improve us. Not sign them to stop Aberdeen getting them.

Same goes for Griffiths. What one would be getting and how much is it costing?

Irvine has been pretty average. Some glimmers of ability now and then but at other times completely anonymous.

Really don't think there is a huge amount between Irvine, Hallberg, Mallan, Magennis and Newell. Tidy enough players each with their pluses but very little drive between them.

I agree about Irvine going to Aberdeen, would be awful for that club for someone like Irvine, who we clearly want and have given an opportunity to get back into football, leave us for our biggest competition for 3rd.

I know some people don’t rate him but there’s no coincidence Imo our form and performances of those around him has vastly improved since he joined

It would probably be a bit ****ty but your post is a bit OTT imo

If we’d lost someone like doidge or nisbet to them then fair enough but I’m not sure Irvine has the quality to warrant such an outburst. He’s a decent player but there’s better out there that we could probably afford.

  8. #1237
I be very surprised if Irvine chooses Aberdeen over us. I think he will sign a new deal with us in the next week or two.

  9. #1238
Irvine has made a difference since joining and looks one of our most effective midfielder, if not the most effective.

All with no pre-season and a long time with little to no competitive football. I feel like that gets overlooked.

I think he's a stick on to have a great season next year with a pre-season behind him so would be a shocker to lose him to the Dons.

I think Irvine will stay, and I’m glad. A very good player for the SPL.

We have massive issues in getting the balance right in the middle of the park, but Irvine can definitely be a key part of a strong midfield.

With it being confirmed now that Hamilton and Killie are relegated is there anyone you’d like to see us go for from there?

I know some have mentioned Kiltie a few times but over personally never seen it.

Killie - Their best players to me have always been Lafferty, Burke, Dicker and Power - who are all too old and past the point of us signing them now I imagine.

Hamilton - Odoffin got a lot of praise but I imagine he’s too similar to Gogic. Jamie Hamilton gets a lot of praise but looks 10x as rash as Porteous. Scott McMann was linked with us, is he good enough? Lewis Smith and Reegan Mimnaugh are 2 other I’ve heard are good prospects

Can't agree with that, at least not overall. Irvine in his first few games did seem to make a difference, and given he had had so little football, there was great anticipation about how he would improve with more game time. Sadly, he has regressed. And I don't buy all this "lack of pre-season" reason which continues to be given for him and Magennis. A few months back the reason given was that they weren't match fit. So which is it?
Irvine also has missed three or four gilt-edged opportunities to score over the last few weeks. I will not lose sleep if he isn't here next season. In fact, he's welcome to head to the Sheepsters if we can have Ferguson in a swap/fee type deal. He is the sort of feisty midfielder we need. Goga aside, we have a plethora of pussy-footing footballers. We need some, but we also desperately need a feisty buzz-bomb or two. Come back Stephane Omeonga.

Irvine isn't our player from the end of the month, so we can hardly use him as leverage in any deals.

Irvine hasn't shown enough for us to be falling over ourselves offering him a deal IMO.

If he goes to Aberdeen because they offer him a better deal fine, for me there should be a ceiling on him that we don't break through.

Kiltie is a good player, wasted at Kilmarnock. Scott Martin will have offers from top level teams - it's no coincidence that his injury coincided with Hamilton’s relegation.

It's not that strange seeing that our first signing has been a left winger. He's obviously aware that it's a weakness for us.

Over rated but still 20 times better than Irvine or Newell to be fair

Because he played some Hibs songs on a piano or smirked at Scott brown that one time?

Him and Mulumbu were absolutely getting tore into each other in one game, was great to watch. Not convinced he's the required standard every week though.

Na that’s nonsense. He’s really not that good a player. One of those who seems to get better the longer he’s been away.

I agree. I want to keep him but I wouldn't be offering him anything crazy. We also need to seriously address the imbalance in our squad. We have a glut of CMs and very few options out wide or up top. That needs to be addressed this summer.

Ethan Laidlaw going on trial at Liverpool.

Been surprised we never gave him a shot considering the teams that are having a look at him

He most likely would have been given a run against Celtc if it hadn't been for the Covid restrictions.

Tend to agree with this, although I would say that Magennis has thus far shown very little from which to base make any meaningful comparison with any of the others.

Irvine has generally underwhelmed me. I suspect he hasn't been used as effectively as he might have been, but I'm not seeing the kind of player his pedigree suggests should be there. No chance I would be pushing out the boat for him to sign up.

I think he and we play better when he plays with Hallberg.

Possibly because both like to play forward passes and try to keep the tempo, as good as Newall is at retaining possession he can slow it to a snails pace. I really hope Magennis kicks on and claims a CM position
