Hibs were in deep relegation trouble Tynecastle had not been a very happy stamping ground for HIBS in recent years and when half time brought with it a 2-0 deficit that trend seemed set to continue In a stirring second half however during which HIBS lost Willie Toner with a dislocated shoulder the ten men from Easter Road came storming back and eventually drew 3-3 thanks to goals from Scott (2) and Fraser. Late in the game with the scores tied the Hearts keeper Gordon Marshall pulled off a wonder save to deny Fraser his second and Hibs’ fourth but at least a vital point was saved and HIBS lived to fight another day and things got even better when the news filtered through that Celtic had defeated Clyde

We got dropped off at Toryglen and our driver told us he would be at Cathkin Park, Third Lanarks ground area. My dad had played there so knew where it was. Stayed until the end and found our bus. There must have been 10 people who got lost or lifted but our bus was full as others could not find their buses. Did not get home till 9.00 as it took hours to get out of Glasgow
We were so confident that we were going to do it that day after the semi final display destroying a Rangers side that went onto win the Cup Winners Cup.

Hibernian defeated Raith Rovers at Easter Road to overcome a 0-1 first leg deficit and set up a semi-final clash with Falkirk

Hibs got off to a blistering start after just 7 minutes when a blocked Anthony Stokes shot fell kindly to McGinn and his strike took a big deflection to loop over the stranded Cuthbert and into the net. It was to get even better for the Hibees just four minutes later as McGregor lost his marker Craig Barr at a Henderson corner to power home a header and put HIBS ahead in the tie

Hibs continued to press but Raith Rovers came more into the game second half. The HIBS defence held firm however and David Gray was unlucky with 6 minutes to go when he got onto the end of a McGinn free kick with a diving header only to see his attempt come crashing back off the post

Hibs only needed a draw to ensure survival and send The Pars down

HIBS got off to the perfect start when Tom Soares’ deep free-kick was head flicked on by McPake and Doherty nipped in to beat Smith with a header thanks to the aid of a post. Doherty was the provider for the hosts’ second getting the break of the ball and chipping across for Doyle to head home. It got worse for Jim Jeffries’ side when Austin McCann was penalised for grappling with Hanlon and birthday boy Garry OConnor stroked the spot kick into the net

Dunfermline tried to respond and HIBS goalkeeper Mark Brown pulled off two good saves from McMillan

Into the second half and the frantic pace continued as Dunfermline tried to get back into the game Eoin Doyle missed an open goal as Isaiah Osbourne laid the ball on a plate for him totally missing the ball in front of goal

A free-kick from distance gave Martin Hardie the chance to test Brown and the veteran’s shot rebounded off the post back off the keeper and out for a corner

Doyle had a header cleared off the line before Paul Hanlon sealed the deal thanks to another excellent assist from Osbourne when his thumping drive hit the underside of the bar and appeared to bounce down this side of the line but the assistant referee awarded the goal

The final whistle was followed by a lap of honour and SOL

What can be better than going to the back yard of your greatest rival with seven first team players missing and next to no hope and coming away with a victory? The fact Mixu Paatelainen’s patchwork posse holed Hearts’ European hopes below the waterline made it all the sweeter for the band of HIBS supporters who had journeyed across Edinburgh

Czaba Laszlo’s men are now just a point ahead of Dundee United with three games left and the automatic Europa League place that looked theirs a few days ago is now in serious jeopardy To make matters worse they will almost certainly be hit in the pocket after a few of their fans couldn’t take Derek Riordan’s winning goal and jumped on the pitch to try to get at the HIBS striker. All in all it was a night to forget for the home team they were booed off the park by their own support but the noise was almost drowned out by the joyous outpouring from the HIBS end as Steve Conroy blew the final whistle

They celebrated Riordan’s 77th penalty like it was a title clincher

Riordan wasn’t the only hero for HIBS Ian Murray was magnificent as hearts laid a late seige on their goal and in the middle Lewis Stevenson and Ross Chisholm outplayed the much vaunted Bruno Aguiar and Michael Stewart and the last line of defence the much maligned Yves Ma-Kalambay was terrific

There was a place on the bench for young Jordan Cropley son of Easter Road legend Alex but they could have been doing with the guile and know how of his father in his heyday as this team was dreadfully short of experience

Hearts had yet to beat HIBS in the three league meetings this season and Laszlo stoked the prematch fire by insisting that Hearts were better than HIBS at every sport and it was up to his players to prove it and they were given a raucous welcome by their fans who clearly believed the depleted Easter Road team were there for the taking

Their favourites started like they believed it too ripping into the HIBS boys testing their resolve right from the off The first 10 minutes was one way traffic yet HIBS survived the onslaught with Steven Thicot making a couple of vital headed clearances On 11 minutes Lee Wallace thundered into the HIBS box setting up Callum Elliot who should have scored but Makalamby easily saved his tame effort Hearts had a strong wind behind them but there was a lack of subtlety to their play and they almost paid the price when Alan OBrien broke clear sliding the ball along the 18 yard line to Riordan who stepped inside and curled a shot through Zaliukas’ legs and towards the bottom left hand corner of Kello’s goal the keeper plunged low to turn it aside but it was a sign that HIBS could be potent on the counter

Riordan was becoming increasingly influential for HIBS and almost scored direct from a corner forcing the flapping Kello to tip it over for another corner. Laszlo had seen enough and after only half an hour he brought on Nade for the ineffective Jonsson

It was all Hearts at the start of the second half but the makeshift HIBS midfield of Stevenson Rankin and Caldwell held firm and continued to look very composed under pressure On 55 minutes OBrien shot wide from the edge of the box and Hearts responded with their best move of the match which left Christian Nade with an open goal from six yards out however David Van Zanten appeared from nowhere to boot the ball to safety. Laszlo’s men came even closer in the 63rd minute when Nade’s powerful head flick found Driver 14 yards out who unleashed a powerful drive only to see Makalambay once again get down to turn it around his right hand post

The Hearts fans were getting restless and so too was Michael Stewart who had been completely hustled out of the match by Lewis Stevenson even complaining to the Referee about a lack of protection but the youngster had done nothing wrong he was playing a blinder HIBS did not worry about that and with 13 minutes to go they were 1-0 up and Hearts were down to 10 men A punt up the park by Makalambay a dart behind Christos Karapidis by Riordan into the box getting ahead of the Greek hauled down in the box penalty to HIBS and a red card to the last man

Riordan calmly sent Kello the wrong way from 12 yards and as some of the HIBS support spilled on to the track to celebrate a couple of hearts fans came out of the Wheatfield Stand and made for Riordan

Amadou Konte’s 90th minute goal rescued a point for third placed HIBS after a Stephen Craigan double had given Motherwell a two goal lead

The Well skipper opened the scoring when he netted from a Brian Kerr corner Craigan grabbed his second just after the break in similar fashion when he rose once again to meet a Kerr corner heading beyond Brown from 14 yards

Craigan then went from hero to zero when he pulled Dean Shiels down in the box but Garry O’ Connor let him off the hook as Marshall dived to his left to brilliantly tip his effort over the bar

Tony Mowbray’s side were back in the game nine minutes from the end when Gary Caldwell curled in a superb 25 yard free-kick. HIBS frantically searched for the leveller but could have lost a third when Jim Hamilton’s fine volley arrowed just past the post

But the equaliser came at the death when substitute Sproule escaped down the right and his cross was swept home at the second attempt by fellow replacement Konte as he lay stretched out on the Fir Park turf

A near capacity crowd saw Alex McLeish and his team officially presented with the First Division trophy after they had beaten runners-up Falkirk

Hibs started off on the front foot but were caught on the hop when they conceded a soft penalty to Falkirk on the break Up stepped old adversary ex-Hearts player Scott Crabbe who was disappointed when HIBS goalkeeper Ollie Gottskalksson dived to his right to tip his effort round the post

Russell Latapy and Franck Sauzee combined to give HIBS the lead when Latapy rolled a free-kick to the big Frenchman who unleashed a trademark 40 yard screamer right into the top postage stamp. Mon Dieu! Paul Hartley doubled HIBS lead in the second half finishing off a fine move. Crabbe did eventually get his goal but his consolation goal for the Bairns didn’t spoil the party The Referee blew the final whistle and there was a good natured pitch invasion Most moving was the joy on the faces of John Hughes and Pat McGinlay who a year earlier had been in tears as HIBS were relegated

Tuesday 8th May was VE Day Victory in Europe Day - the surrender of Germany ended the war in Europe although conflict in the Far East still continued. Bobby Combe had been reported missing by the Army and it was not known if the young man was dead or alive For a couple of months now Bobby had in fact been a prisoner of war in the notorious German Sandbostel camp near Bremen He had recently been rescued and the first thing he did within 24 hours of arriving home was to present himself at the Holy Ground. Willie McCartney immediately included him in the team as captain for the Rosebery Charity Cup Final against Hearts at Easter Road on Wednesday 9th May

Hibernian sealed a European qualification spot thanks to a Colin Nish double against a Dundee United side that had one eye on the Scottish Cup Final Hibernian made one change to the team that lost six goals in midweek to Motherwell in the match that shell-shocked Britain with Sol Bamba returning to the defence in place of Paul Hanlon

Anthony Stokes had the first opportunity of the match following a mistake by Gary Kenneth but shot straight at Pernis Strike partner Colin Nish went one better soon after deflecting the ball under the United goalkeeper following a one-two between Liam Miller and David Wotherspoon

United were taking time to settle into the game but Kenneth almost gave the home support something to cheer when his header from Danny Swanson’s corner was headed off the line by David Wotherspoon Derek Riordan almost doubled HIBS advantage with a shot that deceived Pernis before Stokes once again shot straight at the goalkeeper when put through by Nish

The home side went so close to snatching a leveller just before the break when Damian Casalinuovo got on the end of David Robertson’s freekick but his header flashed just wide

Out of nowhere John Rankin blasted in a snapshot that cannoned off the base of the post with Pernis beaten HIBS kept pushing for the second unaware of Motherwell’s result at Ibrox and Riordan almost got it with a thunderous shot that stung the hands of the outstretched Pernis

With the game seemingly petering out but still 18 minutes to go Colin Nish stooped to head home his second goal of the match after beating Kenneth to the ball from Steven Thicot’s cross

At the full time whistle news filtered through that Motherwell could only manage a draw at Ibrox and HIBS were back in Europe

After a cagey start both teams had chances to score before Falkirk took the lead. Luke Leahy’s free kick crashed back off the defensive wall falling kindly for Tom Taiwo and the exhibees shot was flicked home by Lee Miller

John McGinn went close at the start of the second half firing over the bar from close range and Anthony Stokes should have done better when put through by Cummings Eventually Hibernian’s perseverance paid off in the 57 th minute when a deep cross from the right was headed back across goal by Stokes and Henderson volleyed home from close range Eight minutes later Hibernian took the lead when Henderson’s corner was bulleted into the net by the head of Darren McGregor

Controversially HIBS should have had a penalty when the grounded David McCracken used an arm to take the ball away from John McGinn inside the penalty area however the match officials missed the infringement That would prove to be a highly significant moment as minutes later a long ball into the HIBS box was struck by Falkirk substitute McHugh on the turn and goalkeeper Logan allowed the ball to squirm under his body and over the line

Kilmarnock assured themselves of top flight football next season by beating Hibernian consigning their opponents to a relegation play-off against Hamilton Academicals

Kris Boyd got the crucial goal for the visitors in a match dominated for long spells by the home side

This was Hibs’ 13 th match without a victory dating back to mid February and there can be little doubt their form over that period is that of relegation fodder

They sat seventh and six points clear of then 11th placed Kilmarnock when Terry Butcher took over in November and apart from a short spell in which the new Manager seemed to have turned things around they have arguably looked an even more dispirited and shambolic outfit than under Pat Fenlon

Toothless upfront their dominance of this match particularly in the early stages was undermined by an incapability in front of goal coupled by some doughty defending by Kilmarnock when necessary

With a touch of good fortune HIBS could have been ahead on two or three occasions with Jordon Forster’s top corner bound drive flicked past the post by the head of Vitalis Maksimenko. From the corner Scott Robertson who had already forced Craig Samson into a decent save glanced a header goalwards only for Barry Nicholson to head off the line

Both sides had plausible penalty claims turned away by referee CRAIG THOMSON one for a shove on Michael Nelson and the other a trip on Boyd before Killie got their noses in front Kris Boyd sweeping in a low Ross Barbour cross just inside Ben Williams ‘ right hand post

Kilmarnock had spells of good possession in the second half but again their goal was the one under greater threat Hibernian captain Liam Craig coming closest with a ferocious drive from 20 yards that hit the underside of the bar and away to safety There were also a couple of almighty stramashes in the box that Kilmarnock somehow survived without conceding but in truth Hibernian’s season long problems in front of goal were their downfall once again

HIBS finished bottom of the league thank god it was only make believe war time football with nothing at stake The main thing was that HIBS had survived the crippling events of the war and the massive contribution the club and supporters had made in the war effort. We had the late Dan McMichael to thank for steering the club through the war years and it was now up to the new Manager Davy Gordon and the Directors to get the club back on a proper footing as many of the now demobbed Hibernian supporters now swelling the Holy Ground did not know if there would be a Hibernian Football Club when they returned from the trenches

This match represented the last chance of domestic success in the 1979/80 season for the traditionally dominant Old Firm as Aberdeen had won the Scottish League Championship and Dundee United had won the League Cup. Rangers went into the match as bookmakers favourites as Celtic were missing Tom McAdam and Roddie MacDonald from their line up

Roy Aitken and Mike Conroy were drafted in as makeshift central defenders but they were effective in nullifying the Rangers attack for the first 90 minutes Celtic scored the winning goal in extra time when George McCluskey deflected a wayward shot by Danny McGrain into the Rangers goal past Peter McCloy

At the full time whistle the Celtic players went to celebrate with their supporters some of the Celtic supporters climbed the perimeter fences and went to celebrate with their players on the pitch - an investigation by the SFA found that this initial invasion was a spontaneous if misguided expression of joy. Some of the Rangers fans had stayed behind despite their teams defeat. One of the Celtic fans grabbed a ball and kicked it into the goal at the Rangers end in response to this some Rangers fans invaded the pitch to charge at the Celtic fans who in turn confronted their rivals. Bricks bottles and cans were soon being thrown along with fans using iron bars and wooden staves from terracing frames as weapons The police had insufficient manpower inside the stadium to quell the disorder Match commentator Archie MacPherson described the riot as like a scene from Apocalypse Now or the Battle of Passchendaele

Both clubs were fined £20000, 200 arrests were made Celtic blamed Strathclyde Police for their handling of the riot The vast majority of Police Officers were outside the ground The police blamed Celtic fans for the disorder a position Rangers agreed with. Celtic cited the underlying hostility between the two sets of fans caused by sectarianism in Glasgow Celtic also stating that their team consisted of both Catholics and Protestants

George Younger ( The Secretary of State for Scotland) blamed alcohol and the actions of the Celtic players for the riot

An act of Parliament was passed that banned the sale of alcoholic beverages within Scottish Sports grounds

A disputed Eamonn Brophy penalty was enough to settle a typically tight meeting between Hibernian and Kilmarnock at Rugby Park. Paul Heckingbottom made two changes to his starting line-up with Hibernian Academy graduate Fraser Murray handed his first start of the season Daryl Horgan and Ryan Gauld made way for the pair

Ofir Marciano was called into action early on to deal with a firm strike from Alex Bruce which he gathered at the second attempt At the other end Marc McNulty and Stephane Omeonga combined well before laying the ball into the path of Kamberi but Greg Taylor was alert to cut out the danger

With 20 minutes on the clock Omeonga was involved again cutting in from the left to curl a shot that was easily dealt with by Daniel Bachmann The hosts edged closer with Brophy blazing over and Taylor’s attempted cross bouncing back off Marciano’s bar Marciano displayed his incredible reflexes again on the half hour mark to tip Alan Power’s header round the post drawing applause from the home and away supporters

Killie however were not to be denied and took the lead from the spot when Alex Bruce was adjudged to have been dragged down in the box by David Gray by Referee Andrew Dallas when it looked the other way about Eamonn Brophy made no mistake from the spot The Under-21 Scotland striker blew the chance to double their lead when put through one on one but dragged his effort wide

Heckingbottom rolled the dice with a triple substitution after 65 minutes with Horgan Shaw and Agyepong replacing Kamberi McNulty and Omeonga. Shaw threatened after indecision between Bruce and Bachmann but the goalkeeper eventually took charge of the situation

With a couple of minutes left on the clock it looked like Agyepong had snatched a late leveller after he jinked his way in from the left before unleashing a ferocious strike Bachmann however was in fine form and somehow tipped over to secure all three points for his team

Throughout the first half the tackling was just short of dangerous and Michael Weir and David Cooper were the best players in their respective sides and both did well to avoid injury

With Gordon Rae commanding in the middle of the HIBS defence HIBS coped with Rangers attacks admirably Iain Munro and Alan Sneddon provided drive from the full back positions Paul Kane worked intelligently in support of Weir and Callachan and the pace and control of Joe McBride brought a pace and tireless response from the strikers Gordon Durie and Willie Irvine whose sheer strength and stamina never ceases to amaze

Rangers plight was summed up in the 38th minute when Craig Paterson plagued by injury and only just returned from another lay-off was wrong footed by a cross from the line by Durie and used a hand to deflect the ball. Kane stroked the penalty sweetly past Nicky Walker

The second half produced some crowd trouble when rival fans managed to invade the segregated section of the main terracing

Cooper and McMinn tried to inspire a late Rangers fight back but Rae and Rough managed to keep them at bay

One of the last games played in front of the old East Terracing

Rangers were a poor side and HIBS won easily with a Paul Kane penalty and Ralph Callachan and Michael Weir pulling the strings in midfield in front of a poor attendance of only 7149

On a sad note news filtered through of the Bradford City Stadium Fire in which 56 fans lost their lives and 265 were injured

St Mirren provided the final home opposition of the season and in a stirring programme note Manager Walter Galbraith pleaded for “a rousing support from the Terracing this afternoon..you can play your part in helping the team” That encouragement was duly forthcoming and the players responded by winning the game 2-1 Baker and Baxter grabbing the goals

With two away games left HIBS needed three points to make sure of safety and that was the worst case scenario based on Clyde winning their one remaining fixture versus Rangers at Shawfield. The game in hand for HIBS involved a potentially tricky visit to Palmerston Park to face Queen of the South A tight pitch and a noisy support would cause problems but a large HIBS support made the journey and the noise they would make would cancel out the home support An early goal settled the nerves and at the end of the game Baker 2 Scott and Eric Stevenson would give the Hibees an emphatic 4-0 win

So we come to the last game of the season with HIBS visiting already relegated Raith Rovers and Clyde entertaining Rangers A huge HIBS support made it over the Forth and they were well rewarded with HIBS recording another emphatic 4-0 win with Baxter 2 Fraser and Baker the marksmen

It was celebrations all around Starks Park as HIBS had avoided relegation and to add to the relief word filtered through that Clyde had failed to beat Rangers

When the celebrations had died down it was sobering to realise that in 34 League games HIBS had won just 8 drawn 9 and lost 17 with 47 goals scored and 67 conceded for a total of just 25 points just two away from the relegation place

Walter Galbraith would have to do better if he wanted to keep his job and that new and better recruits were required

Gerry Baker finished top scorer with 22 goals in all competitions while Joe McClelland made the most appearances with 44 just one ahead of Ronnie Simpson

In celebration of the forthcoming coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11 the top eight British sides of the time would play a knockout competition. Arsenal Manchester United Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur would represent England whilst Rangers Celtic Hibernian and Aberdeen would represent Scotland with all the matches being played in Glasgow

Hibs drew a crowd of 45000 for their first round clash versus Spurs at Ibrox.

As early as the ninth minute HIBS were ahead when Ormond took a short corner to Reilly whose delivery into the box picked out Gordon Smith who made it 1-0. On the brink of half-time Bailey crossed for Walters to head past Younger and that proved to be the last goal of the game despite there being an additional 30 minutes played to find a winner

It is worth pointing out that a new lighter ball was used and both sides struggled to adapt

The replay was 24 hours later at the same venue in front of a much-reduced attendance Defences were on top until the 28th minute when McClellan fired home to put Spurs 1-0 up

The second half witnessed HIBS taking command of the game and so it was no surprise when Govan’s free-kick was smacked into the net by the predatory Reilly Then a superb drive by Smith was tipped over the bar by Reynolds and you got the feeling a winner should come from the Edinburgh men and it did on the ninetieth minute when Johnstone’s inch perfect cross was met by the head of Lawrie Reilly and the ball flew past Reynolds into the net to put HIBS into the semi-final against Newcastle United

Ross Caldwell curled in a wonderful 90th minute strike to give Hibernian their first derby win at Tynecastle in four years

Darren Barr poked Hearts in front on the stroke of half time as keeper Ben Williams messed up from a corner but a stunning free-kick from Leigh Griffiths ( who made up for his wrongly disallowed free-kick at Easter Road) levelled matters early in the second half. Ross Caldwell’s cool finish from 14 yards on the 90th minute lifted HIBS back above Hearts into ninth place in the SPL table

This match was eagerly anticipated but on the day was a huge disappointment with both teams cancelling each other out HIBS held their own and looked the more likely in the last 20 minutes coming close on a couple of occasions but the match is probably best remembered for the penalty that never was as Rangers goalkeeper Peter McCloy unceremoniously barged into young Colin Campbell when he was clean through on goal It took a brave man to give a penalty against the old firm in Glasgow in the dying minutes and referee McGinlay waved away the HIBS protests

The attendance was affected by live TV coverage with only 53615 attending

Also worth mentioning the amount of violence and abuse the HIBS support was subjected to throughout the seventies from the Hun horde was unacceptable once again many of our supporters buses would return from Glasgow minus their windows

The match went to a replay on the Wednesday night which once again finished 0-0 after extra time the best chance of the match falling to young Gordon Rae in extra time who seemed to hesitate and the chance was lost

The match went to a second replay which was delayed for 12 days because of the Scotland v England international

The third match started well for HIBS who were the better team and took the lead through Tony Higgins only for Rangers to peg them back Rangers then went ahead just after half time only for HIBS to equalise with an Ally MacLeod penalty with 12 minutes to go

Into extra-time and Jim McArthur saved a Rangers penalty taken by future HIBS boss Alex Miller only for HIBS to go up the park and hit the post. In cruel fashion however the HIBS Scottish Cup Final curse struck once again when long time club servant Arthur Duncan in trying to prevent a curling Davy Cooper cross to the back post reaching a waiting Rangers player he could only succeed in heading the ball into his own goal

Jamie MacLaren netted a dramatic late equaliser to claim his hat-trick as Hibernian and Rangers shared ten goals in the Easter Road sunshine with the Easter Road side registering their highest ever points total in the top flight in the process

Hibs had to win this match by five goals and raced into an unassailable three goal lead thanks to a Kamberi penalty when MacLaren was pulled down in the box a Scott Allan tap in from a Slivka cut back from a Lewis Stevenson cross and a brilliantly executed MacLaren header from another Stevenson cross

Hibernian almost added the fourth goal they so badly needed but Alnwick pulled off a fantastic save from Whittaker’s strike from John McGinn’s corner The goalkeeper quickly released the ball as Rangers stormed forward on the counter-attack and when Holt rolled the ball into the path of Tavernier he quickly dispatched it behind Rocky

Hibs were undone again when Jamie Murphy threaded a brilliant ball through to Rossiter who drilled it low into the far corner of the net.

Jamie MacLaren was just denied at the other end when he latched onto a stray ball in the Rangers box but Bates got a foot in just in time to concede a corner

Seven minutes from half-time Bruno Alves squared the match when he curled in a stunning free-kick from 25 yards. Jason Cummings almost gave Rangers the lead just before half-time when he latched onto an Ambrose mistake rounded Rocky but thankfully Ambrose got back to clear the danger

Into the second half and Rangers found themselves 5-3 ahead thanks to two fortuitous deflected Jason Holt strikes That should have been it but in typical fashion McGinn drove deep into the Rangers half fed Slivka who teed it up for Jamie MacLaren for a comfortable finish

A remarkable game continued to flow from end to end and with 13 minutes left Hibernian survived a real let off when Whittaker appeared to handle in the box before Darren MacGregor cleared Jamie Murphy’s net bound shot off the line

With five minutes remaining Rangers were reduced to 10 men when Jason Holt was dismissed for a second bookable offence for pulling back John McGinn

In the final minute Alnwick produced a stunning save from McGeouch as Hibernian turned the screw on the beleaguered Rangers defence

Easter Road erupted deep into time added on when Jamie MacLaren turned home a low Brandon Barker cross at the near post high into the Rangers net

A jaw dropping last second Bob McHugh goal put Falkirk into the play-off final to play Kilmarnock

On a night of high drama Falkirk took the lead through a Blair Alston strike James Keatings pulled two back for the Hibees the first from the penalty spot

Luke Leahy struck an equaliser before Hibs’ Jason Cummings thumped the bar Extra time beckoned but in the last act McHugh turned on a long throw in to thump the ball into the HIBS net

Rangers failed to claim top spot in the SPL after fighting back to earn a draw in a pulsating encounter at Easter Road Derek Riordan gave HIBS the lead with a splendid curling strike Nacho Novo thought he had equalised but the Assistant Referee said the ball had not crossed the line

The Spaniard did grab a leveller 10 minutes from the end but HIBS held on to claim a point
