    Rangers 0 v 1 Hibernian

    Houchen 60

This match was a resounding success for master tactician Alex Miller setting up 3-4-3 to counter Rangers’ Scotland strike force of McCoist and Johnston and the threat offered by their attacking wing backs by pushing our fullbacks forward into midfield John Collins was utilised as an out and out left winger to feed our new twin pronged attacking threat offered by Keith Houchen and latest signing Paul Wright from QPR

The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft a-gley and this almost came to pass when misfiring Rangers centre forward Ally McCoist rattled Andy Goram’s crossbar with a first minute header when it looked easier to score

After this scare HIBS held Rangers and gave as good as they got their well laid plan paying off in 60 minutes when Collins caught the Rangers defence square and laid the ball on a plate for Houchen’s glorious finish to open the scoring

There was never any doubt about the final outcome after this although McCoist did take the ball around the despairing Goram seven minutes later before lifting his shot high over the open goal from seven yards

This win lifted HIBS into fifth spot closer to the coveted European spot and proved to the players that they could beat Rangers in Glasgow

Paul Wright’s exciting HIBS career would be cut short one week later by a horrendous tackle by Neil Berry in the derby and he would end up being sold to St Johnstone

    He didn’t like us much

IIRC Tommy McLean was standing in splendid isolation the only man in our half and at the same time Sloop John B was shouting at the Lino to get his flag up and Bobby Davidson was waving his arms in the air shouting “ Play on”

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Dundee

    Best 25
    Murray 44

George Best let himself and the team down with the French Rugby team episode and he chose this match to show exactly what he could do with his best goal for HIBS. Picking up the ball just inside the half-way line he carried the ball forward beating man after man dummying four defenders in the box before striking a scintillating unstoppable shot past Dundee goalkeeper Ally Donaldson It took five minutes for the cheers to die down and George to walk back to the centre circle and fully recover

Best set up the second goal for Willie Murray just before the break with a magnificent pass for him to run on to and stick past the Dundee goalkeeper

George Best was head and shoulders above everyone on the park that night with his vision and passing striking the post and laying on at least five gilt edged chances for his colleagues

Ex Hibee Erich Schaedler was fortunate to stay on the park after one robust challenge on the great man

Dundee Manager Tommy Gemmell thought Best was exceptional and his visionary passing was as good as ever

Gordon Smith had the crowd cheering when he went on a mazy run but his rocket shot cannoned off the Saints crossbar

Smith scored HIBS’ second when he headed home an Ormond cross and returned the compliment for Ormond to head the third before half-time

The Buddies were the better side for the bulk of the second half but lost two further goals to Reilly and a last minute strike from Smith

One of the classic games of the eighties

Gordon Rae gave HIBS the lead with a thirty yard screamer after 3 minutes that Hamish McAlpine thought he had covered but only succeeded in getting a hand to it

Davie Dodds equalised with a near post header from a corner Ian Britton then gave United the lead when put through by John Reilly

Richard Gough put United 3-1 up when a ball from Britton fell kindly to him at the edge of the box just before half-time and he drilled a volley low into Roughie’s bottom left hand corner

Ralph Callachan replaced Mike Conroy at half-time

HIBS fought back and Brian Rice was unlucky with a left footed volley that McAlpine held at the second attempt

Willie Irvine #1 then scooped a simple chance over the crossbar from six yards out as he was caught leaning back as the ball fell to him

Irvine made up for this miss as he ran through the United defence chasing a head flick and slid a right footed shot low into McAlpine’s bottom right hand corner

The HIBS fans were in full voice as McAlpine turned another drive from Irvine away for a corner United were unable to clear the danger and Mexico bound Brian Rice scored a magnificent left footed volley as the second follow up corner was partially cleared to him lurking on the edge of the United box and he sent the ball flying high into McAlpine’s top right hand corner

Gordon Smith had returned to the side after being out injured and he did not look 100% fit It did not stop him laying on the opening goal midway through the first half when Bobby Johnstone headed home his corner Smith had a second assist when following a clever move with Reilly he set Reilly up for a tap in just before the half-time whistle

Willie Fernie scored for Celtic just after half-time but the Referee pulled play back saying he had already blown for a penalty Bobby Collins stepped up and Tommy Younger almost saved the award but the ball trickled over the line

Celtic pressed for an equaliser but Bobby Johnstone scored the winner with five minutes to play when he cheekily back heeled the ball into the Celtic net from eight yards out

    Hibernian 3 v 1 St Mirren

    Wilson 16 80
    Williamson 38

Jimmy Williamson came in for the injured Willie Smith for this Scottish Cup Semi Final at a packed Tynecastle

Hibs were the smarter team and took the lead after 16 minutes when Bobby Wilson hit a raking long range shot into the St Mirren net HIBS continued to play Cup tie football safe and sure and added to their tally just before half-time when Jimmy Williamson cracked home number two

At half-time the HIBS fans sang ‘God Save Ireland’

St Mirren came out and made a game of it quickly pulling a goal back For the first time in the competition HIBS looked nervous and Willie Allan had to pull off a great save to keep St Mirren out

Bobby Wilson ‘the skinny daft wee laddie’ Dan McMichael’s inspired signing from the United States then stepped forward with ten minutes to go to score the best goal of this or any other tournament the goal of the season to win the match and book HIBS’ place in the Scottish Cup Final

We are told that on the final whistle the HIBS hordes invaded the pitch and carried Wilson off shoulder high but Dan McMichael, John Farmer, Owen Brannigan and the other Directors sat in the Stand stoney faced knowing that their Cup Final opponents would be Celtic

Stevie Mallan looked a lot less fleshy in the face in that game than he did later in his Hibs career.

I wish we could get the old Stevie Mallan back, he did very well in his first season with us and gave us something wehad missed for a long time and still do, a goal threat from midfield

This was HIBS’ last home match of the season in a match played in a howling gale

HIBS had the wind behind them in the first half so all roads led to Roy Baines in the Celtic goal

Pat Stanton made an emotional first return to Easter Road as a Celtic player

Baines pulled off save after save including one outstanding save from Derek Spalding but the expected goal arrived on 35 minutes when Ally MacLeod capitalised on excellent work by Des Bremner and Ally Scott and wasted no time in burying his shot low past Baines

Celtic equalised within a minute when Johnny Gibson playing his first and only game for Celtic crossed for Ronnie Glavin to head past Mike McDonald

Hibs trailed 0-3 at half-time thanks to a double from Henry Hall and one from John Muir

Hibs fought back in the second half with an Alex Cropley penalty a strike from Arthur Duncan and a first goal for the club from Joe Harper

The result became even more galling when news filtered through that fellow Championship contenders Celtic could only draw with lowly Dumbarton at Celtic Park

Jim Black missed his first game after 112 consecutive appearances

Was that not the game that some of the players dragged him out of one of the pubs in Easter Road. Remember that game for Best and Willie Murray running the show.

Dunno about that but in his interview with the Dundee Courier Ally Donaldson said it was the greatest goal he had ever seen in fact very similar to this goal George Best scored for Fort Lauderdale according to Donaldson
