Never in the history of science or mankind have we tested for coronavirus in such detail, so with the greatest of respect you are speculating the negative as much as I am speculating the positive.
    Thanks for the respect.

I said a vaccine resistant strain was probably unlikely to come quickly enough to disrupt a return to some domestic normality in the coming months. I think that's relatively positive?

That an evolution to vaccine resistance is possible is beyond question though. I mean we know, for instance, that SARS-CoV-2 and the original SARS share a common ancestor and that a vaccine for one wouldn't work on the other.

Great vaccine numbers today. Even if we only keep up that pace we should have everyone’s first jag done by mid April.

Reiteration of the point that overseas travel won't be possible for the foreseeable future.

Absolutely correct. He's an excellent journalist and tends to follow the story fearlessly.
Was hilarious watching him swat away homicidally seething twitter bers.

Vaccines Minister just said the UK is on track to have having OFFERED a vaccine to all care homes by mid February. FFS sake, what does that actually mean?

Chat with every care home manager including "Do you want anyone here vaccinated?"

    I don't get it.

Last week you were saying the numbers were a disgrace, a shambles etc. Yet you knew the large vaccination centres weren't going to open up until this week and the numbers would go up then. So, the plan is the same and is being excuted the same as last week. But now it's ok?

Thank God. Getting there, but the next stage will be managing the second doses quickly and well and drilling into what completing vaccinations does and does not mean for restrictions.

The fanatical devotion to daily figures by some on here reminds me of asking a [insert racist stereotype of stupid person here] to check whether the indicators on your car are working. "Yes they are" "No they're not" "Yes they are" "No they're not" ...

When things improve I say so. Last weeks numbers were poor and NS said so. This weeks are much better so far and I’m happy to say well done.

More likely they've just hammered out a mail shot with an Excel attachment.

I'm suggesting that focusing on the transient detail can make it harder to see an overall process clearly.

It was clear though that numbers would improve as soon as the mass vaccination centres opened. It's been known for a while that would be the case.

The figures were poor and could still be much better. And I'll continue to comment accordingly.

I think he meant that the joke could be repurposed to fit "stupid" stereotypes that are in themselves racist, eg. British people would have used "Irish person", Irish people would have said "Kerryman" etc. The joke was racist, not you.

I could alter my post to [Irishman] but I think I'd get infracted pretty sharpish. Not sure where you're getting the idea I'm accusing you of being racist. And I'm not accusing anyone of being stupid, just suggesting some are obsessing about detail.

It's not the case that SG did badly last week and well this week. They were following a plan!

Can't help feeling I'd have enjoyed your post a whole lot more had it begun with 'Things improve when I say so.'

And I felt the plan needed sped up. Is there any reason the mass centre could not have been opened last week? The vaccine supply was here?

Maybe they didn’t delay, maybe they just did not start the preparations on time? There are lots of potential reasons for them not opening earlier but vaccine supply was not one of them.
So far I haven’t heard a reasonable excuse for them not being open last Monday as opposed to this Monday.
