Here’s a “fact”relating to that game at Firhill that people might find “interesting “.Of the Thistle players that played that day 5 of them earned in total 68 caps for Scotland. This stat is a bit lopsided as Alan Rough acquired 53 of them.”Fascinating “eh !!!
Wondering who else they could be. Guessing Jimmy Bone and John Hansen were two of the players.

Turnbull should have signed Rough and kept the change for George Stewart instead of the Barrel. Might have won the league then.

We still would have been without Stanton, Edwards and Blackley for a good few weeks. The were all given chunky suspensions.

Did we not fail to win any of our last six games or something ridic. season 72-73? Still finished second, but you have to see that as one that got away.

Hughes's tackle on Bobby Duncan was a disgrace.
It was a shocker. Bobby was away from him and Hughes lunged at him from behind. I can’t remember if he even got booked.

Our 1st cup tie in the cup final 71/72 season was at Firhill in front of 21,000. I remember the terraces being rammed & Schaedler & Gordon both scored their 1st Hibs goals. Must have been 12k Hibbies there.
I was there. First tornadoes game as I think it was Alan Gordon's debut?

One of Erich’s rare goals. A 25 yarder if I remember correctly. We won every round to the final 2-0 ( after 1-1 in the semi) and it was supposed to be an good omen as we had done the same on our way to lifting the trophy in 1902.
We know how that worked out!!
2-0 at home to Aridrie in the 4th round and then 2-0 at home to Aberdeen in the QF. I think 25k vs Aberdeen when Scotland were playing in the 5 nations at the same time. Was at all the Scottish cup games as a 14 year old that season

    21/1/2012 Scottish League Premier Division

    Hibernian 2 v 3 St Johnstone

    Griffiths pen
    Booth

A seesaw game and a dagger through Pat Fenlon’s heart and HIBS’ survival hopes

Lee Croft opened the scoring for Saints on his debut with an 18 yard finish on the half hour

HIBS had to wait until the 70th minute to equalise when Leigh Griffiths was pushed in the box and duly picked himself up and dusted himself down to convert the award

Saints regained the lead shortly after when the ever dangerous Liam Craig dispossessed Stephens and scored with ease

Griffiths hit the bar with a header from an Eoin Doyle cross before Calum Booth showed him how it should be done when he curled a beauty past Enckelman to score what HIBS thought was a share of the points

With the clock ticking down Sandaza received a cross from the left swivelled in the box and squeezed a pinpoint shot past Brown to seal all three points

Partick Thistle fielded a young centre forward on this day none other than our very own Joe McBride Snr who was a popular figure with our fans almost from the day he arrived

    21/1/1959 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 4 v 2 Raith Rovers

    Baker 2
    Gibson
    Ormond

Hibs had been drawn against Raith Rovers away in the Scottish Cup but before that game they had this dress rehearsal in the League on a frost bound Easter Road

The game provided great entertainment for the fans with Drummond in the Raith goal denying Joe Baker his hat-trick miraculously saving a postage stamp bound vicious drive after Baker had been set up by Gordon Smith tipping it around the post and out for yet another corner

Hibs would progress to the next round of the Scottish Cup after a replay

    21/1/1956 Scottish League Division One

    Kilmarnock 0 v 1 Hibernian

    Reilly 73

Lawrie Reilly scored the winner following a neat one two with Gordon Smith

Watson of Kilmarnock wasted a late penalty when he blasted the award high over Younger’s crossbar

    21/1/1950 Scottish League Division One

    Partick Thistle 2 v 2 Hibernian

    Turnbull
    Smith

Hibs were drawn against Partick Thistle at home in the Scottish Cup but first up they had to visit ‘Firhill for Thrills’ in the League

Eddie Turnbull continued his fine scoring form by opening the scoring just after the half hour

Thistle took the lead either side of half-time with goals from McCallum and Gibb but the best goal was yet to come

A corner kick from Ormond was delivered to the back post Gordon Smith controlled the ball with his first touch before sending it crashing into the net off the underside of the bar from an impossible angle

In the game that St J won 3 2 at ER as you say Lee Croft scored their 1st. It came from a Saints break when a midfield player ran into space & David Stephens backed off & off & off. Finally Paul Hanlon ran out past Stephens & threw himself in front of the shot. It was a magnificent block but unfortunately the ball broke to Lee Croft who scored. FFS Hanlon said the guy next to me. Plus ca change! 😁

    22/1/2020 Scottish League Premiership

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Hamilton Academicals

    Doidge 64
    Hanlon 86

Alex Gogic rose at the back post to head home a Dales corner after 17 minutes to give Hamilton a half-time lead

Jack Ross rung the changes at half-time with the ineffective Slivka and Hallberg being replaced by Omeonga and Newall

The change seemed to work after 10 minutes when Kamberi played a ball inside the full back Martin Boyle scampered onto it chipped the ball over the goalkeeper and watched in agony as the ball rebounded off the post Luckily the ever vigilant Christian Doidge was there to knock the ball home getting there just ahead of Gogic

Just when it looked as though Accies would hang on for a well deserved point Paul Hanlon Captain Courageous rose to determinedly head home a Boyle cross with five minutes to go

Riordan scored the first when he was first to react to a Glass cutback sidestep his man and send a perfectly placed shot past Combe

The second arrived when he flicked a Garry O’Connor cross high past Combe

Derek was denied a hat-trick shortly before half-time when Garry Hay kicked his effort off the line after Combe had parried a Fletcher drive

The third goal arrived when after a pass from that man Glass Riordan drilled a low drive from the left hand side of the box powerfully past Combe

The result cemented HIBS’ position as the best team in Scotland outside the Old Firm

In a rough and tumble match played on a heavy pitch and marred by some horrendous tackling from the hosts HIBS’ obvious quality won the day

Forfar hit the post from an early penalty and dangerman Gordon Smith was carrried off on a stretcher just before half-time but his injury was not as bad as first feared

    22/1/1887 Scottish Cup Semi Final

    Hibernian 3 v 1 Vale of Leven

    Groves 2
    Montgomery

Vale Of Leven who had previously won the Scottish Cup were Hibernian’s opponents in the semi-final

The match that was due to take place at the Holy Ground on 15th January was cancelled due to frost and fog at the last minute much to the disappointment of the already gathered large crowd

The match took place one week later and the visitors looking good took an early lead

‘Darling Willie Groves’ then took a hand in proceedings grabbing an excellent equaliser and giving HIBS a second half lead. James Montgomery making sure of a Hibernian win with a third

Hibernian Park erupted in celebrations the slum team from Edinburgh’s Irish neighbourhood were in the final of the Scottish Cup Or were they?

Vale of Leven lodged a protest stating that the man who had destroyed them Willie Groves was in receipt of illegal payments accusing him of professionalism a serious charge in those days

It was to roll on to be one of the most bitter and controversial cases ever heard by the SFA

The match result would be upheld and HIBS would win the Scottish Cup for the first time in this season

    23/1/2016 Scottish League Championship

    Hibernian 3 v 1 St Mirren

    Henderson 10
    McGinn 44
    Stokes 90

Liam Henderson opened the scoring with a superb free-kick after 10 minutes John McGinn added the second just before half-time against his old club Stevie Mallan still had time to pull one back for Saints with a brilliantly executed free-kick before the half-time whistle

On for the last 20 minutes Celtic loanee Anthony Stokes celebrated his return to Easter Road with a last minute strike

This result took HIBS to within two points of The Rangers at the top of the League

    23/1/2010 Scottish League SPL

    Hibernian 5 v 1 Hamilton Academicals

    Nish 16
    Stokes 21 53

    23/1/2002 Scottish League SPL

    Hibernian 3 v 4 Aberdeen

    Luna 2
    Townsley

If ever a match summed up Franck Sauzee’s time at HIBS as Manager this was it

Hibs fought back bravely three times to equalise only to be so cruelly killed off at the death

Eugene Dadi gave the Dons the lead only for Paco Luna to equalise 40 seconds later with a magnificent strike from 12 yards Robbie Winters put Aberdeen ahead again before Ulysses De La Cruz ripped the Aberdeen defence apart with a pacy mazy run allowing Derek Townsley an easy finish from his cutback

Guntveit put Aberdeen ahead for the third time on 48 minutes only for Paco Luna to equalise with a trade mark looping header from a Grant Brebner corner

Derek Riordan Hurtado and Jarkko Wiss all went close to scoring before disaster struck in the 90th minute Ian Murray pulled Darren Young down in the box and even although Nick Colgan made a brilliant save from Darren Mackie’s spot kick Mackie was first to react and fired home the rebound

    23/1/1999 Scottish Cup Round 3

    Hibernian 1 v 1 Stirling Albion

Chris Jackson would come back to haunt us in the replay

    23/1/1997 Scottish Cup Round 3

If we lost 4-3 at home to Aberdeen under Jack Ross, would people describe that as the exciting type of games they've been missing... or would they say 'we just can't win the big games'?

    WIllie McCartney RIP

Hibernian Manager Willie McCartney took unwell during this game

He was driven home where tragically he passed away later that evening

Three months later his young exciting HIBS side would win the League becoming the first team outside the Old Firm to win the League since 1904

Like his father a former Hearts Manager he is credited with signing Tommy Walker for Hearts and the Famous Five for HIBS

HIBS fans still speculate to this day as to how good his HIBS team might have become had he survived

An exciting Scottish Cup tie at Easter Road Pat Stanton put HIBS ahead with a great header Alan Reid equalised before Joe Harper put HIBS ahead with a left footer Alan Hunter equalised for the Pars and just when it looked as though a replay would be required Bobby Smith scored with a dramatic late header

Just. catching up with previous post as I’ve been preoccupied with current affairs.
The five Patrick Thistle players with 68 caps were:-
    Alan Rough - 53
    John Hansen-2
    Alex Forsyth-10
    Ronnie Glavin- 1
    Jimmy Bone -2

The Bonnyrigg Rose player who scored in their 8-1 defeat on 21/12017 was called Hoskins. No knowledge of first name or whether he was a Jambo.

    25/1/2003 Scottish Cup Round 3

    Dundee United 2 v 3 Hibernian

    Brebner 10 28 87

Hibs TV legend Tam McManus ran the United defence ragged. Midfielder Grant Brebner gave HIBS a two goal first half lead

Into the second half and United were back into it with ten minutes to go Stephen O’Donnell scoring with a deflected shot and a Jim Hamilton penalty

Just when it looked as though it was heading for a replay Grant Brebner rose like a salmon to power home the winner with a header and complete his hat-trick

Now desperate United piled forward hitting the post and having a goal chalked off for offside

    25/1/1975 Scottish Cup Round 3

    Hibernian 0 v 2 Celtic

Celtic had sold Davie Hay and Lou Macari and had new signing Ronnie Glavin on the bench

Celtic took the lead when Hugh Whyte failed to gather a Harry Hood cross and Dixie Deans out jumped Pat Stanton to score

Des Bremner hit the post before with 10 minutes to go Harry Hood hit the by-line for Stevie Murray to slide in on the seat of his pants to prod home

    25/1/1969 Scottish Cup Round 1

    Rangers 1 v 0 Hibernian

Colin Stein comes back to haunt us as he taps home from a suspiciously off-side position after a Willie Johnston shot had hit Thomson Allan’s post

This match is best remembered for the ball rolling down John Madsen’s arm in the HIBS penalty box with minutes to go and Referee R H Davidson ( Airdrie) waving play on much to the disbelief of the Ibrox hordes
