i get what you mean it's a fair point but imo that would be giving in to terrorists, if the authorities did that this time then it could become the norm.
I get your point too and agree that you can't give in to terrorists. The inauguration has the potential to be much worse than the 6th was. I see it is going to be a scaled down event and that there will be a massive security presence and Facebook are blocking the co-ordination of protest events from being organised through their platform.

Instead of one big gathering in Washington storming into the Capitol, what I'm guessing we will see are numerous incidents all round the country but indivudyall they'll be on a smaller scale than what happened at the Capitol. I expect the Trump followers will find another platform to use to coordinate but one that's less mainstream than Facebook.

Since Trump was inaugurated The Washington Post has been running a fact checker, keeping a running tally of the lies he told in office. Well, with just a few days left of Trump's presidency, he has gone past THIRTY THOUSAND lies. That must take some doing.

the poisonous cretin apparently going to free up to 100 other *******s before he leaves, inc...

Donald Trump to 'issue 100 pardons before fleeing Washington DC at 8am Wednesday' (msn.com)

Among those he is set to free is shamed eye doctor Dr Salomon Melgen, who was jailed in 2018 for stealing $73m (£54m) from Medicare by ordering treatments for elderly patients who did not need them.

It is also suspected he could pardon rapper Lil Wayne, who is due to be sentenced this month on weapons charges.

Similarly he may order rapper Kodak Black, who is in jail for illegal weapons possession, to be free, according to reports in the US.

i hope the yanks do something about this to stop a PoS president still having the powers to do this, even after being impeached..again

I read similar on CNN earlier. No surprise that he'll be issuing pardons given the power he has to do so, but for Trump just another opportunity to play to his base. Speculation over whether he'll pardon Bannon, Assange or any of the Capitol rioters (or even himself / his family) but the part of the article pasted below was also interesting. (Article also noted that some of the lobbyists are paid thousands of dollars to do their lobbying).

"Trump is still receiving multiple streams of recommendations on pardons from those advisers who remain at the White House, as well as people outside the building who have been lobbying for months for themselves or their clients.
The expectation among allies is that Trump will issue pardons that he could benefit from post presidency.
"Everything is a transaction. He likes pardons because it is unilateral. And he likes doing favors for people he thinks will owe him," one source familiar with the matter said."

What a messed up system that allows one person to pardon who they want. Shambles.

Today his diary contained...nothing. Absolutely nothing. A spokeperson told a news channel that he'll be taking lots of calls and doing lots of duties. But he was diarised for nothing. Tomorrow he becomes the first living president to not attend his successors inauguration.

God knows how long it will take the US to recover from the last four and a bit years. He's a ****ing shambles and I hope he's left in a jail cell for the rest of his life.

I doubt he’ll ever go to jail but he will likely spend the rest of his life dealing with lawyers. The Trump org won’t survive this.

I read that he’s also not doing the customary hand over of the White House to the new incumbent.

I just watched the ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial. That was Presedential.

With all the personal pain Joe Biden has been through it would be too easy to be cynical, but somehow he has made it through and remains a decent man. If I had lost my wife and 2 children I would be broken, so has gets my respect for being a better man than me.

His list of pardons and commutations have been announced, and include Steve Bannon, Jared’s pal Ken Kurson and his fundraiser Elliot Broidy.

    Corrupt to the end.

so, has the tiger king joe exotic been pardoned ? his legal team have lined up a limo and helicopter for his expected release after serving just 2 years of a 22-year sentence, and he wants to get his hair done straight away as he doesn't want the public to see it

I don't really understand the whole pardons system.

I understand why it could be useful for overturning a death sentence at the last minute when all other avenues have been exhausted for example (executing people in a supposedly civilised society is a whole other debate anyway). However this huge swathe of pardons at the end of presidential terms just seems like an abuse of executive power. A chance to sort out your mates and a few celebrities without fear of political reprisal. Why has Bannon been pardoned? What compelling evidence is there that he is likely to be the victim of a miscarriage of justice if he went to trial?

That's not just aimed at Trump either because it's pretty much a tradition for outgoing Presidents. It seems a pretty weird justice system that allows this and, unlike a lot of areas of US politics, there is little that can be done at federal level to stop or reverse the decision.

There could be many pardons which have been kept secret.

I doubt it. Pardons have to be public and to pardon her would go against Qanon, with all that would do to Trump's massive pile of lies.

AFAIK, it’s just a historic convention that they’re made public and there is actually no requirement to do so.

There’s a strong belief among many that Trump will have pardoned others privately and they’ll only become public down the line if those people are charged.

I think historically it is seen as a good thing as it has been used to correct a lot of miscarriage of justice cases. It is also seen as another balance on a justice system the is racist. It’s always been abused though and that is what gets the attention.

There is no benefit to that though. A public pardon will stop an investigation in its tracks. If it’s kept secret then it will proceed and the hit to reputation and further legal jeopardy can happen.

In the right hands it is the ultimate check to the system and has probably done more good than harm. Trump has just ended things as he started.
