Pressure needs to be kept up. It is not going fast enough for them to meet the targets they set themselves.

The race to get the vaccine rolled out is like a triathlon where competitors get to choose the order of their disciplines. England got straight on the bike and will probably do the running next before the swim. Scotland are just getting out of the water but will still cross the line about the same time as England. We'll probably have less blisters at the end too because we started in a better position.

Are the slow(er) rates of vaccination Scotland not partly due to the focus on care homes first?

Not that it isn't disappointing that we are not getting a faster roll out of course.

I understand the focus on vaccinating care home residents as a priority but less than 40% of vaccines being administered so far is still pretty poor.

This needs to be significantly improved over the coming days.

1 in 10 people in the UK had antibodies against Covid-19 last month. Slightly less in Scotland at 1 in 11 people.

But the 700,000 were not always available so you can’t just get magic a new total number and say only 40% have been done.

It’s a bit like saying that while we had used a 100% of available vaccines up to yesterday and thus had a 100% rate when a new delivery arrived today we are only at 40% and that’s not good enough.

Then there is the fact that there was a figure of 530,000 expected to be avail for the whole of Jan so I’m not sure where the extra has suddenly appeared from.

On the flip side for the care home focus making us slow reason...that is maybe A reason but the majority of vaccinations have not been happening in care homes so it can’t be the sole reason for the apparent lag in Scotland numbers.

Anyway let’s hope for a better daily figure today as the weekend jab rate was a bit disappointing.

There is not a single Asian country on that list btw

I think there was a few comments on here maybe last week saying what you highlight. That's there's zero evidence to say Scotland has handled this any better than other parts of the UK

I wish all these charts were split out by nations

Not sure if this and JMS’s post is aimed at me or not. In any event, what I actually said was that ‘being slightly better than the ***ttiest’ is no badge of honour.

The graph is for the seven days up to 17/1 by the looks of it. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t think deaths are less meaningful just because they happened in the first wave. The fact remains that, since Coronavirus hit Scotland, the number of people who have died from it is a disgrace and worse than most other countries. In her defence, Sturgeon seems to at least learned some lessons from her government’s utter failure.

Cue more than one post - ‘it’s not their fault, being part of the UK etc’.

Leaving the 700,000 figure to the side for a second, we were sitting at around the 500,000 figure more than a week ago now and we are only now just over 50% of the way through that initial supply and that's before we even get to the additional 200,000 vaccines we now have.

According to this article, it seems the new variant is sweeping through care homes in England, and has overcome some of their defences.

It wasn't aimed at you but can't remeber who it was. I mind posting to you my response was at the specific "we are all the same in the UK comparison" post

We arnt the same but at the same time doesn't mean we couldn't have been better

In true Lennon style, WE ARE ALL THE SAME.... Except less cases per 100k and less deaths per million

I heard Sturgeon say that part of the reason for the slow rollout of vaccines is due to Scotland's geography and having some remote areas.

That may be the case but conversely 70% of the population live in the central belt. We really need to see the vaccine rate pickup or the SG are quite rightly going to get hammered.

  22. #32091
BBC don't expect any new restrictions, just clarity than the stay at home order will continue beyond the end of January.

Schools expected to stay closed until at least the February break.

I don't think any of that comes as a surprise.

I guess they could've just smashed them out to that area and a easier to reach group

But if they had supply issues afterwards it would possibly mean more deaths?

Hopefully we all end up at the same destination around the same time

It's not just geography but that really doesn't help. Care homes have to be visited individually by the vaccination teams. Many of the residents will be distressed by the appearance of new faces disrupting their routine. That is not only time consuming, it ties up manpower as well. Given all of that we are doing pretty well in Scotland. Once the mass vaccination centres are up and running we will see things moving much more rapidly.

Same. The hospitalisation figures need to come down a good bit first. If they reopen too early pushing the R rate back up, it's going to put too much pressure on the HB's.

The long-term impact of all this on children's education is of great concern and goes much deeper than the cancellation of exams for a second year running. Personally speaking, the home learning resources are significantly better this time round than they were last year but it's no substitute for kids being in school, especially when you bear in mind the variations in how much time parents have available to help out younger kids who can't be expected to get on with the work unassisted.

I think schools could have made a decent stab at catching up had the closures been limited to what we experienced last year, but if, as you say, this shutdown lasts for a whole term then they're really going to struggle.
