Can also confirm 9 years since the Cowdenbeath game as it was my son’s 1st ever Hibs match. He was only 2 at the time, made a last minute decision to head up thinking he could run around the grass bank if (when) he got bored.

Had a disagreement with the bloke on the turnstile who wanted to charge me £12 for him, I said I wasn’t paying that for a 2 year old. He eventually got his supervisor who told him just to let me take him in for free!

Was bloody freezing. Cowdenbeath scored after 20 seconds and my son promptly burst in to tears and said he wanted to go home.

“Ah” I thought, “NOW you’re a true Hibs fan”.

Ian P was extremely upset by the accident, 100% not his fault. He visited John B in hospital asap after the match. Incidentally the legendary Maud McFarlane was Ian's aunt & Ian remains a Hibs supporter.
Brog my cousin played in the same team as Ian, Clermiston YMCA. They played in all green strip shorts etc.
I used to go and watch them now n again and remember being at Saughton enclosure when they defeated a team called Qoin Thistle in a cup final
Qoin Thistle were a Catholic Youth club ? and I remember my cousin getting a kick out of beating them as he was a good Catholic boy and being ex St John Vianney and Tony's !

    Hibernian 4 v 1 Morton

    Cormack 33 35
    O’Rourke 51 88

Colin Stein made his debut in this game after scoring 11:12 for the Reserves

Erik Sorensen in the Morton goal had to look lively inside the first five minutes punching a Stevenson corner off Cormack’s head and fisting over a drive from the keen Colin Stein

Morton started to take the initiative and twice former Hibee Morris Stevenson forced Wilson to his knees to make saves with good efforts on target

Morris Stevenson had the best chance of the match to open the scoring when Chic Halliday set him up with a free shot on goal but once again Wilson managed to scramble his attempt clear

Stein once again showed his undoubted potential with a glorious diving header but somehow Sorensen managed to divert the ball from the top corner out for a corner

In the 33rd minute following a defensive mixup Cormack found himself in the clear and managed to sidestep the goalkeeper and tap the ball into the empty net

Two minutes later HIBS were two up Stein tried an overhead kick into the box and Cormack repeated the trick with a wonderful overhead kick that sent the ball flashing high into the roof of the net

Six minutes into the second half after Wilson had saved at the feet of Craig Watson Jimmy O’Rourke increased Hibs’ lead when he fired home through a ruck of players in the box

Alan McGraw almost pulled one back for Morton but his effort just cleared the crossbar

Morton’s pressure finally paid off in fifty five minutes when Smith fired low into Wilson’s net

I was at the Irvine Meadow game and I remember a few bigots had infiltrated their support for the day and tried to make it into a Rangers level of sectarian ditties.

Fortunately they mostly disappeared long before the end of the game and left the genuine Irvine supporters in peace. There were quite a few comments on Social Media expressing some Irvine supporters' disgust at the infiltrators for giving them a bad name.

p.s. I was honestly surprised at how good they were and they were rightly applauded off the park at the end of the game.

    10/1/2015 Scottish League Championship

    Hibernian 3 v 3 Falkirk

    Cummings 2
    Leahy og

HIBS threw away a two goal lead and two points to draw with Falkirk at Easter Road

Jason Cummings opened the scoring on 11 minutes but John Baird levelled with a free header on his Bairns debut

Jason Cummings then added another two to complete his first senior hat-trick but Referee Willie Collum controversially decided that his second goal was an own goal by Luke Leahy ?

Into the second half Martin Boyle missed a good chance to increase HIBS’ lead when he knocked the ball past the upright from a good position

Peter Grant pulled one back for Falkirk from a corner when the ball seemed to enter the net via a HIBS defender There was no doubt however about Grant’s well taken second and Falkirk’s equaliser.

Apologies once again for the partisan commentary

    10/1/1968 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Round 3 Leg 2

    Hibernian 1 v 1 Leeds United ( Agg 1-2)

    Stein 4

My first ever HIBS game and I was hooked when I saw the green shirts with the long white sleeves running out under the drench floodlighting in front of 40000 fans

The match that had been delayed by five minutes to allow the massive crowd into the ground got off to the best possible start from a HIBS point of view

Kicking up the slope Cormack fed Quinn out on the left who spotting Stein’s run squared the ball high towards him and as the ball bounced in front of him fending off the attentions of Cooper he spotted Sprake off his line and managed to lift the ball over his despairing hands from a tight angle towards the unguarded net Jack Charlton backtracking could only help the ball into the net

It was redemption for the young centre forward who had had a goal controversially disallowed and had been carried off in the first leg to square the tie on the night

Leeds did not take this setback lying down and Eddie Gray unleashed a shot from the edge of the penalty area that Wilson gathered at the second attempt

HIBS piled forward and Bremner nicked the ball off Stein’s foot as he was about to strike and Cormack was hauled down outside the Leeds box but nothing came of the freekick Minutes later a long range daisy cutter by Quinn almost caught Sprake unawares

Into the second half and HIBS were going down the slope and things were getting heated

A Billy Bremner back heel allowed Gray a free sight of goal and he hit it with all his power but Pat Stanton put his body in the way to deflect it for a corner Cormack and Charlton then entered Clive Thomas’ book for separate misdemeanours

Alex Scott pulled out a brilliant save from Sprake with Joe Davis going close from the resultant corner bringing a huge gasp from the crowd

Alex Scott and Colin Stein then broke clear with only Charlton between them and Sprake’s goal Scott fed Stein whose rushed shot flew past the upright

Peter Cormack then produced the best piece of skill in the whole game showing the ball first to Bremner then Hunter before impudently going past both feeding Quinn who once again sent his drive beyond the post

Five minutes to go and Leeds scored against the run of play Lorimer harassed Wilson on the right hand side of his box just as he was about to launch a hand to ball clearance down the slope forcing him to inadvertently take an extra step with an alleged push the rule at the time was that the goalkeeper was allowed to take four steps something Sprake got away with the whole game taking several steps on more than one occasion

Clive Thomas gave the award Jack Charlton stood on the goal-line Johnny Giles flighted the ball over and with one flash of Charlton’s head HIBS were unluckily and undeservedly knocked out of the Fairs Cities Cup

Hibs had one final spell of pressure that ended with a Quinn corner He sent the ball over Sprake came for the ball and missed it but there were no takers in a green and white jersey

Leeds United would win the Fairs Cities Cup in this season

Remember seeing Leeds United at St James Park where Billy Bremner knocked the Newcastle no 11 out with an uppercut that Josh Taylor would have proud of.My memory is a bit addled but I seem to remember that the referee booked the Newcastle no 11 for diving and shook the great Billy’s hand for letting him be on the same pitch as him. Leeds had a reputation for being bully boys but they did. have top quality players especially the Scottish boys.Wasn’t all that keen on Johnny Giles, who every time I saw him he used to do his party trick of creeping up behind players and drawing his studs down the back of their leg and then disappearing into traffic.A nasty piece of work.

Hibs’ first game without John Brownlie and Des Bremner was drafted in as a straight replacement to make his debut Although he had a solid debut too many of his new colleagues had an off day and United won 1-0 thanks to a first half goal from right back Andy Rolland

HIBS would drop two points and Rangers would enter the title race

42000 turned up to watch this repeat of October’s League Cup Final in which Motherwell had defeated 10 man HIBS so comprehensively 3-0

Hibs flying high in the League were out for revenge and Gordon Smith and Lawrie Reilly ran the show

HIBS took the lead when the Motherwell goalkeeper parried a shot and Smith with his back to goal performed an overhead kick that saw the ball destined for the roof of the Motherwell net

Into the second half and Willie Ormond fired in a stinging shot past the Motherwell goalkeeper that earned him a pat on the back from his marker

Smith then went on one of his trade mark marauding runs down the right wing beating man after man before cutting inside to his left foot and sending an unstoppable shot past the impressive Hamilton

Forrest pulled back a late goal for Motherwell

HIBS would win the League in this season

Hibs won a thriller at East End Park to cast the Pars four points adrift at the bottom of the SPL

Andy Kirk headed Dunfermline ahead on 13 minutes following an excellent delivery from Joe Cardle

Hibs equalised when after a period of sustained pressure Dunfermline failed to clear their lines and Leigh Griffiths latched onto a David Wotherspoon header to calmly slot an angled shot beyond Turner

On the hour HIBS made a positive change bringing on Garry O’Connor and it paid off 15 minutes later when Calum Booth fed Griffiths in the Pars box who found O’Connor and the Scotland international fired the ball into the roof of the net

Hardie thought he had equalised with a header but Hart appeared on the goal-line to clear the danger The equaliser was only delayed however as HIBS failed to clear a Cardle free-kick and Buchanan fired home from close range

Leigh Griffiths scored the winner for HIBS in eighty three minutes when Turner allowed a routine shot to squirm away from him and over the line

15/1/1969 Inter Cities Fairs Cup Round 3 Leg 2

Hibernian 2 v 1 SV Hamburg ( Agg 2-2 Hamburg won on away goals)

    McBride 2

    Dearie me!

Hamburg came to defend their one goal lead and defend they did

The Hamburg goalkeeper sported a green top the HIBS bench protested before kick off but the Swedish Referee refused to do anything about it

As it turned out HIBS had two perfectly good goals wrongly disallowed for offside against the goalkeeper

The first when Cormack headed a corner back across goal for a Joe McBride tap in The second when the Hamburg goalie could only parry a Cormack shot and Stanton followed up to fire home

Then the normally reliable Penalty King Joe Davis missed a late first half penalty when he fired past the post following a foul on Peter Cormack

German World Cup hero Willi Schultz did not reappear for the second half as he had a suspected broken cheekbone

Hibs finally got the goal their superior play deserved when following yet another HIBS free-kick Joe McBride scored after a huge stramash in the box There was nothing the Referee could do about this counter as there was about ten Hamburg defenders in front of McBriide

Game on but tragedy struck 11 minutes later when leg break victim Bobby Duncan tried a speculative cross-field pass this was intercepted by veteran German striker Uwe Seeler who gave Thomson Allan no chance from 15 yards to score the invaluable away goal and stun the home crowd into silence

Joe McBride pulled a goal back for HIBS in the final minute but it was too little too late

Remember it vividly. No whistle, no sign of of giving a foul until the ball was in the net. An example of the New Firm being treated like their older counter-part.

In the Hamburg game, did Pat Stanton not score a great goal that came back of the net stanchion and the referee thought it had come off the bar?
Wasn’t allowed to go to night matches as a ten year old so wasn’t at the game sadly.

Sounds familiar Some newspaper reports have HIBS scoring three good goals that were not given with the Terrace side linesman constantly raising his flag

I was at the game and I remember Alex Scott Eric Stevenson and Peter Cormack in particular coming in for serious roughhouse tactics from the German defenders who also employed time wasting tactics straight from kick off

Interesting to see the legendary Angus Plumb scoring v Aberdeen. Ten games for Hibs and ten goals.

"Plumb scored 7 goals in 7 league games, and 3 goals in 3 league cup games for Hibs, all in season 1948/1949. He had signed for Hibs in Feb 1948.

He left for Falkirk in December 1949, before moving onto East Fife and East Stirlingshire.

In total his career stats are quite impressive, 103 goals in 184 league games; 33 goals in 41 league cup games and 7 goals in 15 Scottish Cup ties. He also played in another 2 cup games [ST Mungos cup and another cup competition] for Falkirk scoring 1 goal"

Another tale from the Hamburg game is that one of the goals which was almost saved by the keeper on the way in was disallowed by the linesman for handball by a player in green.

    Hibernian 4 v 0 Hamilton Academicals

    Paatelainen 37 61
    Lavety 68
    McGinlay 90

This was HIBS’ ninth consecutive victory in the second tier and they were enjoying life playing fancy football and attracting big crowds

Hamilton on the other hand were 13 games without a win and when an early opening goal was disallowed for offside frustration got the better of them and they lost their discipline when Ian McAulay and Gary Wales were both sent off for violent conduct

It was doubtful if they would defeat this HIBS side with 11 but with 9 the floodgates opened

Goals win games and HIBS scored the only goal of the game when Jamieson headed a Callachan cross back across goal and the predatory MacLeod was lurking on the edge of the six yard box to crash the ball home

THE RETURN OF THE BAKER BOY

After a 10 year absence prolific goal scorer and my Dads all time hero returned to Leith

There was tremendous media interest and I remember Football Focus doing a special on this match as not only was the Baker Boy returning to his old club but the big question was could HIBS breach the Aberdeen defence as goalkeeper Bobby Clark had gone 1093 minutes without conceding ?

Joe Baker Captain for the day led the team out resplendent in green top white sleeves white shorts white socks and white boots All sideburns and cheeky chappie grin The electric pace I had been told about had gone but the brain was still there holding up play, perfect distribution, adopting dangerous positions and not being afraid to get stuck in

The 23500 crowd had to wait until the 64th minute when Pat Stanton smashed the ball past Clark to end his record followed by a glorious bullet header from Baker to seal the points Davie Robb scored a late consolation for the Dons

Mature, sensible signature required for responsible position. Good prospects for the right candidate. Apply within.
