Some great old games to read about once more and amazing how the (my) memory plays tricks with some of the games and scorers, great stuff.

Was was at the game in 71
devastated when stein scored what seemed like an eternity into stoppage time
only two players short of the tornadoes there
maybe cilla was injured but Alan Gordon didn’t sign until the next month if I recall his debut was in the 3rd round of the Scottish cup at fire hill in january
seem to remember it was an early kick off maybe 2pm so we could get home for Christmas dinner

I really like this thread - thanks for keeping it going.

It would be great to go to a Hibs v Rangers game today - radio coverage is okay but doesn't really hit the spot - and I've only watched two games this season - the Cup semi final and final.

Hopefully we can get fans back next season.

HIBS pummelled them but unfortunately the Girvan Lighthouse was in top form and Rangers defended well

Tosh made his debut 22/1/1972 in a 1-2 home loss to Motherwell

    Pat Stanton missed a penalty

I attended the Scottish Cup tie at Firhill What a game defo Firhill for Thrills

Erich Schaedler scored a beauty when the ball was cleared back to him from one of his famous long throws and Alan Gordon opened his account

Hibs would get to the Scottish Cup Final in this season

    Halcyon days

    26/12/2019 Scottish League Premiership

    Hearts 0 v 2 Hibernian

    Boyle 2

Martin Boyle’s double made it back to back derby wins for HIBS at Tynecastle for the first time since the 1970s as Hearts remain stuck at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership

Both goals came in a first half dominated by the visitors with a well taken volley followed by a one on one finish

Hibernian had a host of star men with McGregor and Stevenson immense while Scott Allan did not put a foot wrong showing graft as well as guile

The pace and finishing skills of Boyle was enough to earn him Man of the Match

    Hearts 1 v 1 Hibernian

    Lovell

Craig Levein’s first Derby as Manager and he was starting to become a stane in our shoe

HIBS totally dominated and Stuart Lovell gave HIBS the lead in 41 minutes HIBS continued to squander chances and Gary McSwegan equalised for Hearts on 60 minutes

Hearts continued their resistance and HIBS were unable to get the better of Niemi in the Hearts goal

The Man Utd game saw Bryan Robson taken off with a shoulder injury. That injury plagued him throughout his career.

    Barcelona 4 v 4 Hibernian

    J Baker 7,74
    Macleod 19
    Preston 72

HIBS put on a magnificent performance against the Inter Cities Fairs Cup holders leading 2-0 after 20 minutes and 4-2 with only 6 minutes to go on their home turf

Joe Baker scored the first when goalkeeper Ramillieta came to the edge of his box to clutch a long ball it fell from his grasp and the ever vigilant Joe Baker waltzed round the keeper and coolly slotted the ball into the empty net with his left foot

Things went from bad to worse for Barca in twenty minutes when Johnny MacLeod accepted a pass from Sammy Baird in midfield carried the ball swiftly into the unguarded centre and unleashed a cracking shot from 20 yards that beat Ramillieta all ends up

Cue a crescendo of boos and white hankies all around the Stadium

Barcelona pulled one back following a freekick and HIBS responded just before half-time when Baker struck the upright

Barcelona equalised eight minutes into the second half through Kocsis when he was left unmarked and was able to pick his spot with a header

HIBS continued to press forward and were denied a penalty when MacLeod was brought down inside the box five yards from goal

Hibs took the lead with 18 minutes to go when Tommy Preston rattled in a great left footer that went in off the upright Baker followed up three minutes later when he broke clear and smashed a 25 yarder that cannoned in off the post giving the keeper no chance

Barcelona were now getting the slow hand clap and were getting desperate

With six minutes to go Kocsis pulled one back in a goal mouth scramble to complete his hat-trick and in 89 minutes he split the HIBS defence with a wonderful pass for Evaristo to fire home

This match was played in gale force winds and driving rain so a good outcome

    27/12/1941 Scottish Southern League

    Rangers 0 v 1 Hibernian

    Combe 76

Hibs recorded a League double over Rangers in this season

Hibs were without flu victim Bobby Baxter and RAF duty bound Arthur Milne but Sir Matt Busby was available and he made all the difference as the HIBS halfback line was the key to victory

Rangers could not handle the green jerseys

In each half HIBS were denied stonewall penalties but it did not disturb their poise and they produced all the good football

With fourteen minutes to go and after good play by Busby Gordon Smith led the way through the Rangers defence and an astute cross to Bobby Combe saw him crash the ball with cool deliberation into the roof of the Rangers net despite close attention from two defenders

Rangers did not take their defeat well as it was the first time in this season they had been defeated at home and failed to score and it was no surprise to see several Hibernians limping off the field of play at the final whistle

HIBS Joe Crozier Davy Shaw Alex Hall Matt Busby Sammy Kean Bob Hardisty Gordon Smith Willie Finnigan Willie Anderson Bobby Combe and Jimmy Caskie

That performance at Tannadice that day was scintillating. The news of the tsunami was breaking that day, I remember a full boozer in Dundee watching the pictures in stunned silence.

I was at the game when Tommy Preston was sent off. It was the first time I'd ever seen it happen so it was quite shocking. Of course this was long before cards and the refs used to have a huge rigmarole when booking a player. When it was seen that Preston was leaving the field there was a stunned silence.Gerry Mays was the Kilmarnock player involved. An inside forward-sometimes centre- he was a good player but it was thought that he had a grudge against Hibs because he'd been quite a few years at ER during the was but was released in 1946 without ever playing for the first team.Any time he played against Hibs he was well known for niggling fouls. In this game he slid in on Preston well after the ball had gone and as he got to his feet Preston pushed him over and was sent off for it. As usual with the SFA lack of interest in the paying customer fans never knew what was going on .Some refs would wave their book as a threat ,others could be writing a novel while still others would book a player without making it apparent and you would only find out when you read the paper. There was one well known story of the era when a player was booked and the ref said "off you go"meaning go back to your position but the player trotted off the park. Allegedly.

That 4 nil was probably Liam Craig at his best for Hibs....also shout out to Scott Robertson, an underrated player imo....

We didn't have one ball winner in a midfield of Craig, Robertson, Handling & Allan & absolutely no width yet we destroyed The Rangers 4 0. Spoils a lot of preconceived ideas!

Great to see Ian Black getting subbed on the clip never to be seen again

    Scotty Allan totally eclipsed him

Remember going into Robbie Bar after that game to be met by a typical knee jerker saying he had left early because Hibs were rubbish and he was’nt going back. The look on his face when I told him what had happened after he had left was a joy to behold.Typical Gareth Evans performance, one week he looked top quality the next you wondered why he bothered getting out of bed that morning. What was even more commendable for the Hibs comeback was for most of that game Duncan Ferguson was outstanding and unplayable for Dundee United.I am right in thinking Billy that Ferguson scored both United goals.A complete nutter but some player when he was fit.
