Peter was in the same Scottish Schoolboys team as Jimmy O'Rourke
On the back of that they were both invited down to Old Trafford for a weekendwith a view to signing for Man Utd
Put up in a top hotel ,shown around the ground and taken to the pictures with a rep from United
Their parents (no agents then) were wined and dined with of course the push to get the signatures of both players(Matt Busby had previously came to Clermiston to speak to Jimmy)

Anyway cut to the chase .
,On the morning they were due to get the train home no sign of the Lorimers.
Leeds had got word they were there and tapped Peter and slipped them away
The rest as the say is history.

As for Jimmy, a fair number of English clubs wanted his signature.
Spurs being another who sent a top man(Bill Nicholson) to Clermiston to sign him.
I kid you not when i say clubs were lining up to sign Jimmy .
Both sides of the border (bar one club!)
Celtic sent their top scout (Fallon) to the house

Faither asked him on the way back from Manchester

" Do you need more time to make your mind up ,James?

"No,Dad I want to sign for Hibs "

    The Grassmarket Affect !!!

I dont think any other players from that Scottish Schoolboys side made it pro

Possibly one or two but cant remember names
Ian Grassick maybe (Brog or Forza Fred here may recall

i might add when they left the hotel the complimentary drinks (that you pay for !)in the rooms were all gone and it wasn't Jimmy or old Mick
So Mick was on his best behaviour!!

Oh James .....you could have played alongside Law and Best !!!!
Brilliant story Mick. Was Frank Sharp in that team? Didn't Jimmy & Lorimer score 2 goals each in one game, all from about 30 yards?

I had a quick look on Scottish Schools website. The player I was thinking of was Derek Trail but he was a year earlier. In Jimmy's year there was also Jim McCalliog & George Gartshore who IIRC was on Hibs books but never played a 1st team game. Even in those days the West bias was ridiculous, it was unusual for an Edinburgh player to be capped.

I thought that Graham and McBride would be our main strikers for a few years. Unfortunately the club owner thought differently.

Dropped them both our major goal threat for our biggest game of the season versus Bill Shankly’s Liverpool at home for the sake of a few shekels and watched our Manager walk as a consequence

    Nuts!

How did i forget him and Sharp.
The chances of making a career at football even for these talented schoolboy players was slim as it is today

    AS for the weegie selectors
Even they could not ignore Jimmy and Peter
    Peter was from Dundee
My initial post is not all from memory (i was only 10yrs old when James signed for Hibs

I think i saw one of his games
    If you can check Brian
It might have been at Ibrox
(AL ask him next phone call if i remember too)

Jimmy's horrific leg break at Tannadice when he was 17? set him back years imo

    Another snippet
He also played for the Scottish FA Youth Team at a tournament in Cannes,France
A culture shock for a laddie fae The Market
Although similar to Clermiston and Cramond beach!
Willie Johnston(rangers) and Jimmy became good pals on that trip

    12/11/2016 Scottish League Championship

    Hibernian 1 v 1 Falkirk

    Hanlon 83

Paul Hanlon’s late header earned HIBS a draw which moved them a point clear at the top of the Championship after finally breaking down a ten man Falkirk

The visitors seemed on course for an unlikely victory when John Baird’s excellent finish stunned Easter Road

Former HIBS midfielder Tom Taiwo had been dismissed for a crunching first half tackle on John McGinn

The Bairns held firm until Hanlon connected with a floating McGinn delivery in the closing stages

HIBS had further chances through McGinn and Grant Holt but were left frustrated at failing to overcome their depleted opponents

Hibs Laidlaw McGregor Hanlon Fontaine Gray Fyvie McGinn Stevenson Shinnie Holt and Boyle

    Hearts 1 v 2 Hibernian

    Kano
    Archibald

Hearts hadn’t lost to HIBS in 10 years but that hoodoo ended in this Edinburgh Derby

HIBS scored first through Paul Kane but then had skipper Gordon Rae sent off

Despite being down to ten men HIBS held on then in 83 minutes a sublime flick from Kane put striker Stevie Archibald through on goal leaving Hearts’ Dave McPherson trailing in his wake as he smashed the ball into Henry Smith’s bottom left hand corner at the Gorgie Road end from fully 22 yards to make it 2-0 for HIBS to the utter elation of the HIBS fans on the Gorgie Road terrace behind the goal

Dave McPherson netted an injury time consolation and it finished 2-1

I'll give him a call next week Mick. Amazing to think that in the same calendar year that Jimmy was representing Scotland schoolboys, he also played for Hibs in Europe & scored his 1st Hibs goal. Is Jimmy our youngest ever scorer, 16 years 88 days?

Ive had the good fortune to play against Jim MCCalliog. He played the odd time in our local 5 a side league guesting for a team called Boston (named after a B'pool hotel) the same team boasted Tony Green and Dave Wagstaffe. Needless to say the won the league year in year out. They had another ex pro playing for them too who played for Bradford City but his names escapes me.

    13/11/2010 Scottish League SPL

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Motherwell

    Riordan 14 and 27

Nick Blackman fired Motherwell ahead from the penalty spot but Derek Riordan replied soon after with a low strike A Stephen Craigan Gerrardesgue slip gave Riordan all the time in the world to run through and finish clinically Riordan was denied a hat-trick by a brilliant Randolph save in the second half

Brewster and McKinlay put United ahead Michael O’Neill cracked a beauty off the post

Into the second half and Darren Jackson from close range thanks to a cute Keith Wright dummy Minutes later and another dummy from Wright allowed Brian Hamilton a free shot on goal that Alan Main was unable to hold

    13/11/1971 Scottish League Division One

    Airdrieonians 2 v 2 Hibernian

    Duncan

This match is significant in that it saw the long awaited debut of Alex Edwards Mickey was instrumental in setting up goals for Arthur Duncan and that man Blackley again but exhibee Derek Whiteford spoiled the party with a double for Airdrie

13/11/1968 Inter Cities Fairs Cup Round 2 Leg 1

    Hibernian 3 v 1 Lokomotive Leipzig

    McBride 3

The HIBS fans got their first glimpse of striker Joe McBride the man brought in to replace Colin Stein and what a home debut he had with a first half hat-trick that had the HIBS fans asking at half-time Colin who?

Shooting up the slope Joe McBride was on target after only three minutes when German Goalkeeper Neuert dropped a Jimmy O’Rourke cross at his feet for an easy tap in

In the 14th minute just after Pat Stanton had cleared a shot off the line HIBS went two up. Alex Scott chased a throw in from O’Rourke held off a tackle from Geissner crossed hard and there was McBride flying in to bullet home a header

McBride scored his third on half-time taking a Stevenson pass first time with his left foot and the despairing goalkeeper could only help the ball into the net

Into the second half and with the advantage of the slope and a strong wind HIBS were unable to add to their total indeed with 20 minutes to go Naumann took advantage of a mixup in the HIBS defence to grab a valuable away goal. Minutes later Alex Scott was cynically hacked down by two defenders and when he retaliated he was immediately sent off by the Swiss Referee

With 5 minutes to go 10 man HIBS were robbed of an obvious penalty when O’Rourke was hacked down inside the box but the Referee ignored all appeals

Q Who was the last HIBS player to score a hat-trick in Europe?

    Johnstone

    13/11/1948 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 3 v 4 Morton

    Cuthbertson 40
    Reilly 59 89

Hibs never held the lead in this game with Neilly Mochan opening the scoring after only 10 seconds

Even a last minute goal by Lawrie Reilly was too little too late

    14/11/1992 Scottish League Premier Division

    Hibernian 3 v 1 Falkirk

    Tortolano
    Evans
    Hamilton

Jim Jeffries’ Falkirk visited Easter Road on a freezing afternoon on League business. Gary Lennox gave the Bairns the lead with a looping effort after 12 minutes. Joe Tortolano equalised for the Hibees just one minute later to cries of ‘Joe Joe Super Joe’ from the terraces. Falkirk had a string of chances to score before the interval but a combination of their own inept finishing and splendid goalkeeping from John Burridge kept them out

HIBS improved after the break but Falkirk kept coming forward. Burridge denying the Bairns with more great saves then Gareth Evans scored with a header on 67 minutes. Substitute Brian Hamilton put the icing on the cake with a goal in the last minute

Hibs travelled to Perth to face St Johnstone who were undefeated so far at Muirton Park

The pitch enjoyed the reputation as being the biggest in Scotland and Hibs employed Alex Cropley and Arthur Duncan on either wing to take advantage of the extra space

A Bobby Johnstone double and a Lawrie Reilly counter secured a point but many neutral observers felt HIBS should have had a penalty in the last minute when Reilly was pulled down inside the box.The Referee waved play on and was immediately surrounded by protesting angry HIBS players and was urged to consult his linesman After several minutes deliberation the verdict free kick outside the box when it was blatantly obvious to everyone inside the ground that the infringement took place inside the box

Funny, looking at Hibs v Motherwell in 1987. Must have been early days in Millers tenure at Hibs. How many centre halfs can you fit in a side, with Rae, Hunter, MacIntyre, Mitchell and Orr all on the park. Mitchell would have been left back, Orr holding midfield and I’m assuming a very young Hunter was at right back?

Dougie Bell playing too. A very talented lad who never really made the most of his gift.

Remember Lexo having everyone back at corners

Dougie Bell always looked at though he had the ba attached to his boot with a piece of string[/QUOTE
Sometimes he went gung ho and had 2 going up for our corner kick.
Aye, he was quite conservative in his approach to the game at times.

A guy like Bell was never going to offer the workrate Miller demanded from his players, guys like him and Joe McBride jnr were never going to fit into his style of play.

15/11/1978 Scottish League Cup Quarter Final Leg 2

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Morton (Agg 2-1 )

    Refvik 2

Morton arrived in confident mood for the second leg of this League Cup quarter final after the enigma that was Andy Ritchie had scored a hat-trick against league leaders Dundee United the previous Saturday. This talented Morton side also included Bobby Russell and Neil Orr

Hibs had their own joker up their sleeve though as they were given the go ahead to play Norwegian Internationals Sven Mathisen and Isaak Refvik who were still awaiting Work Permits

Mathisen’s promptings from midfield were a joy to behold while Refvik stole the show with two goals that took HIBS into the semifinals Both goals were set up for Refvik by Ralph Callachan the first from a free kick the second from a superb run and cross

There was a late scare however when Morton were awarded a late penalty kick and the normally reliable Andy Ritchie uncharacteristically blasted the ball over the crossbar

p.s. Here's a wee video in which many of us current oldies were the kids running onto the pitch to celebrate at the end of the game (apologies for the poor quality...and the weird music :-) )

    Brilliant!

No often you get to see a trophy being presented at Easter Road

    Cue pitch invasion

‘Yes Sir I can boogie ‘ would have been better background music

I must have watched dozens of games where we should have beaten THEM and didn't, this must be about the only one I can think of where it was the other way around .. and what a time to do it!
But you know it ain't all about wealth,
as long as you make a note to .. EXPRESS YOURSELF!

    16/11/1974 Scottish League Premier Division

    Hibernian 1 v 0 Clyde

    Harper

Stan Anderson brought his stuffy Clyde team to Easter Road containing Willie McVie Dom Sullivan Brian Ahearn and Joe Ward. It was that man Joe Harper that got the winner in a dour encounter with Clyde goalkeeper Evan Williams claiming he had been impeded by Harper in the build up to the goal

    16/11/1968 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 5 v 1 Morton

    McBride 4
    Quinn

Joe McBride makes his home League debut days after scoring the first hat-trick by a HIBS player in Europe versus Lokomotiv Leipzig

    16/11/1963 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 1 v 1 Celtic

    Hamilton

Celtic opened the scoring through Bobby Murdoch but it was debutant Willie Hamilton recently signed from Hearts with a brilliant goal that sealed the point

Special mention to Ronnie ‘Faither’ Simpson who was outstanding in the HIBS goal

Willie Hamilton would go on to score 24 goals in 74 competitive appearances from midfield and would be rated by Pat Stanton as the best player he has ever played with

    16/11/1946 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 2 v 2 Falkirk

    Aitkenhead
    Smith

With the cold weather taking a grip and playing a part in proceedings HIBS once again paid the price for defensive frailties with two fine goals from Johnny Aitkenhead and Gordon Smith being cancelled out with a double from John Wardlaw

    16/11/1878 Scottish Cup Round 3

    Edinburgh University 2 v 5 Hibernian

    Frank Rourke 3
    Tailor Flynn 2

The Scottish Cup Third Round draw threw up a local derby for Hibernian as they were drawn to play Edinburgh University at their Corstorphine Sports Ground The Match was eagerly anticipated by the Edinburgh footballing public and special trains were put on from Waverley to Corstorphine and the crowd numbered several hundred in these embryonic times in football

HIBS lined up with Club Captain Michael Whelahan in goal and a splendid match ensued HIBS went two goals down but fought back in true Hibernian style with a hat-trick from Frank Rourke and two from Tailor Flynn

The press wrote that the cheering of the Hibernian supporters ‘baffles description’

They also commented that the heavy and unnecessary charging of the previous season was nowhere to be seen

This fine victory was followed up with a fourth round victory two weeks later at Powderhall with Hibernian soundly beating Rob Roy from Callendar by nine goals to nil
