'Alan Hansen played for Partick this day'. I don't think that's right, as Alan Hansen didn't make his Partick debut until 1973. I'm assuming it was his older brother, John, who was playing that day.
PS Keep up the good work. These are great![]()

He placed the ball in the corner quarter circle turned to me and said “ I’m f##king knackered! “ and then took the corner kick
I always thought ‘Hammy’ was a good player and the Huns snapped him up

There was a thread a wee while back about the identity of the falling HIBS player?
The fact it is his birthday today I thought it was an appropriate question to revisit
Not sure about the Hearts player?
Hearts are not my bag
Guessing maybes John Stevenson????

I’m surprised too.He was a good player and should have been used more at the 1974 World Cup as he was in good form at the time.

I know the 70s weren't great for them, but my recollection was their yo-yo years were later than 1974. As posters have confirmed in subsequent posts

Out of my four years at High School, Hibs and Hearts only played one season in the same league as each other (78-79)
I think we played each other more times in the EoS Shield between 77 and 83 than we did in the league

8/9/2001 Scottish League SPL Match Day 6
Motherwell 1 v 3 Hibernian
Sauzee 2 ( 1 pen)
Fenwick
For this game Alex McLeish restored his back three of Smith Fenwick and Sauzee.
Hibs played well with great aplomb Franck Sauzee scored a penalty and uncharacteristically missed a second in the first half
At half time in the Changing Room he was raging with himself. He looked every HIBS player in the eye stating that he should not miss a penalty and if HIBS got a free kick outside the box he should take it because the ball it will be going into the top left hand corner.
Sure enough second half HIBS got a free kick outside the box and every HIBS player knew what was coming as he stepped up and curled a superb free kick beautifully into the top corner
Franck should have had a hat-trick that day
Hibs Colgan Fenwick Smith Sauzee Laursen Jack De La Cruz Orman O’Neil Brewster and McManus
Subs: Luna Smart

8/9/1973 Scottish League Division One Old Match Day 2
Hearts 4 v 1 Hibernian
Cropley
Hearts get their revenge for 0-7
Alex Cropley scores his fourth goal in five games
8/9/1971 Scottish League Cup Quarter Final First Leg
Falkirk 2 v 0 Hibernian
This game was a major disappointment The HIBS train came off the tracks. I still remember the large crowd of 18500 where young boys had to sit round the track
George Miller scored with a soft penalty and Tom Young scored with a long range howitzer that dropped out of the sky with snow on it
HIBS: Herriot Brownlie Schaedler Stanton Black Blackley Hamilton O’Rourke Hazel Cropley and Auld
8/9/1965 Inter Cities Fairs Cup Round 1 Leg 1
Hibernian 2 v 0 Valencia
Scott
McNamee
HIBS were once again drawn against their arch nemesis Valencia who had eliminated them in 1963 before going on to win the trophy for the second time in a row and reaching the final the season after
It was to be another glorious night under the lights for HIBS with Jim Scott heading home a John Baxter cross after only 5 minutes.
Valencia then parked the bus and their goalkeeper Zamora seemed almost invincible as the Spaniards repelled attack after attack
Hibs were denied at least three blatant penalties in this match and bizarrely the HIBS Captain John Baxter was called into the Referee’s room at half time and told to instruct his players to stop shouting at each other during play a request that was obviously ignored
Big Bad John McNamee headed home a valuable second goal to take to the away leg on the stroke of full time when he bulleted home a Peter Cormack cross from close range
This game gave Bob Shankly the unique record of being the only Manager in the country to have managed a team in the European Cup, Cup Winners Cup, Fair Cities Cup and the Friendship Cup
Hibs Wilson Simpson Davis Stanton McNamee Baxter Cormack Quinn Scott Martin and Stevenson

I always thought the five forwards against Valencia was a line of inside forwards, they could all play there.
