I mentioned this earlier. Sweden actually had the highest per capita death rate in the world for the week leading up to 2nd June. They've now acknowledged they might have got things wrong:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-52903717

I guess we'll get a better idea about their strategy if they continue to have the world's highest per capita rate over the next few weeks and months and countries which went into lockdown see an ongoing decline in their per capita rate.
What is that based on exactly?

I've possibly misunderstood the wording of the stat and if so then apologies but there appears to be around 7 countries in the world with a higher death rate than Sweden.

    Brazil crisis deepening:

Reuters: Brazil death toll passes 30,000 with true infection rate estimated to be 15 times higher than official figures
The number of daily deaths is now well in excess of 1200 and the overall number of confirmed cases -- 555,383 -- makes Brazil the world's second most affected country after the United States. However, experts estimate the real number of infections could be up to 15 times higher than official figures, given relatively little testing across the vast country of 210 million.

The Independent broke it down into per capita figures but I can't find the article now. This Guardian piece explains it though:

Number of cases is still around 6 times higher than Spain and Italy. They're both in the low hundreds now whereas the UK is just below 2000.
I don’t know how many daily tests other countries are doing. There were 171,000 tests done in UK yesterday.

I guess if you test less then you’ll find fewer infections.

I posted a screenshot further up from the FT site. Sweden now has the highest per capita new deaths per day. Here it is again:

Spain is no longer recording excess deaths, Italy was also nearly back to long term averages as of Apr 30.

Latest from UK is still about +25% in England, +10% in Scotland, +12% in Wales.

Actually, the Scottish figures are a week ahead, up to May 22. For comparison purposes at May 15 where the E&W figures are, S was +17%.

Ahh ok thanks I'm assuming the emphasis is on the "new" deaths.

Are they still double counting tests? ie nasal and saliva tests in the same kit are counting as two for one patient.

Highest over the last 7 days.

But overall still well below Italy, Spain and U.K. And about the same as Scotland. Scotland is worse if you use the excess deaths number.

What's significant about the Swedish stats is that their decision to follow a form of herd immunity as opposed to strict lockdown has attracted a lot of attention. It will be interesting to see how the figures stack up over the forthcoming weeks.

So, under the new tracing system, should all MPs who were present in the Chamber today also be in self-isolation...?

Rees-Mogg should be flogged for putting MPs lives at risk.

Flogged as in privatised and sold-off? Not many takers there.

Only if he tests positive and only if someone has been within 2 metres of him for 15 minutes or more.

There were not 171,000 tests carried out yesterday. The government included the tests are in the post in the figures.

I don’t dig into things that closely. The reported tests were 171,000 and the positive cases (presumably from those tests) was 1,871.

I suppose if there is consistency in approach then you can then compare accurately to previous dates.

For example on the 6th May there were 6,111 new infections reported from 69,000 tests.

According to the news this morning if a person gets tested they get swabs from both the nose and mouth, that's counted as 2 tests.

Pretty sure that's been the case from the start, they count the tests, not the testee.

Chiquitos and Frankie & Bennys to close 100+ restaurants permanently. They employ over 20000 people UK wide. They also own the Wagamama brand.

I'd expect a few more hospitality groups to start announcing closures in the coming days if the whispers I'm hearing are accurate.

Is there an advantage to that or am I just being too generous tonight and it's simply just the Government at its tricks again and it's a way of making the figures look more impressive?

It has although they didnt make it clear
    https://www.hibs.net/showthread.php?...=1#post6183271

If the results are both tests being negative (otherwise why have two?) then while theres two tests in the kit, the test per person is really only 1

At the very least the govt figures are misleading. Like many of the other statistics used by them recently.
