People talk about the new normal. But this is the new normal in politics. They think they're untouchable - with a large Commons majority they are going to lie their way through the coming years. They lied about the C19 strategy, they lied about PPE, they lied about care homes, they lied about testing, and they lied about test track & trace. Ian Blackford has waited approximately 12 hours before saying what he's said, it's not even been a full 24 hours yet since the story broke. Maybe Boris Johnson will sack Cummings by tonight, I doubt it but he might.

All I was questioning was, did Ian Blackford put similar public pressure on Nicola Sturgeon to sack Catherine Calderwood in the hours leading up to the decision that evening? I don't believe he did.

I'm just sick and tired of politicians in this country, of every persuasion, sticking their oar in when it suits them but then either turning a blind eye to, or defending, exactly the same behaviour when it suits them.

Another key difference in how they were dealt with is that Calderwood issued a public mea culpa at lunchtime on the Sunday (it was widely derided as inadequate, from what I recall). Sturgeon made her anger clear around the same time. We didn't have to wait too long thereafter for the resignation announcement.

If Blackford didn't comment publicly, he probably had a very good idea it was going to be properly dealt with fairly quickly (you have to think he'd have been in contact with the FM privately). I accept however that it was a situation he would be rather content not to get involved in, while the opportunity to sink the welly into Cummings is one he will be relishing! But the continued, completely unacceptable silence from Johnson just allows opposition politicians (and to be fair some Tories) to fill the vacuum.

Whilst the other knowingly put the health of her family and locals near her holiday home at risk. This really isn’t a case of who behaved worse. They both behaved deplorably and showed utter contempt for the rest of us. Why are people using this to try and downplay what Calderwood did?

They're not. Cummings was actually knowingly infected with a highly contagious and dangerous disease when he decided to ignore instructions on isolation whereas calderwood was an arse without a contagious and dangerous disease who ignored instructiond lockdown rules.

They are both idiots and one deservedly lost her post, but the other who's behaviour is far worse will carry on like nothing has happened.

According to Worldmeter Spain saw a big jump in deaths and infections yesterday, relative to what they had been in the preceding couple of weeks. I assume that is an anomaly based on change in calculations rather than anything sinister though.

I can't remember what day it was but Spain announced hundreds of historical deaths in one day recently as there had been a data lag. They confirmed that the actual number of deaths on that day was about 50 or something.

I don't have any problem with her questioning of Blackford. In situations like this, it's important those who are dealing out criticism are challenged on that criticism. However, I would expect the same challenge to be made to the opposing position, which I think is where the BBC appears to have fallen short in this instance.

I see that by providing Laura Keunsberg with an off the record rebuttal last night the government have been able to change the narrative from Cummings visiting his parents to visiting his sister. If LK had attributed that rebuttal last night to a named source like any self respecting journalist they wouldn’t have been able to change the reasoning when they realised the original excuse did not stand up to scrutiny.

Thanks for this. Presumably those figures don't represent a steep rise in cases/ deaths from the weeks prior to lifting measures, or we'd be hearing more about it.

I can't remember when each country started to ease lockdown but here's the same figures from the same source for the last week of April which seems a decent period to compare with as I think it was early May before anything was really lifted.

IMHO, had the police who visited Calderwood issued her with an FPN for the offence at the time, justice would have seen to been done. She would not have had to resign or be sacked as that's double jeopardy plus it's not a criminal conviction so would not effect her in the future.

I think that's a rather hopeful take on the events. The Westminster machine needs to do everything in its power to belittle the Scottish Government and the SNP administration. Attacking the CMO was all about the Tories and the right wing press using her misdemeanour as a stick to beat the Scottish Gov. Issuing a fine wouldn't have made the slightest difference, in my view.

BBC has lost its impartial point of view over the last 10+ years ..and the LKs of this world have gone weak when we needed a challenger voice most ..more focussed on protecting relationships than holding up the mirror ..

Channel 4 news to me still stands out from the crowd as a quality news channel in the UK
