I’m all for this. The sooner the better. And broadened out to other retailers too.
Definitely. The sooner my other half gets back to work the sooner I can slow down with the garden and DIY. I'm knackered.

Is anyone else playing coronavirus bingo during the press conference?

While the critique of the Government handling of this entire sorry saga is undoubtedly fair, it was a leading virologist based at Oxford who said human trials on a vaccine would be commencing this week, when she was interviewed by Andrew Marr on Sunday. I can't remember her name right now, but this week was the stated start period well before Hancock announced anything today.
Saw the interview and gave the impression so many hurdles to pass to get working vaccine. Now running as first BBC story. Up there with 100k tests a day which diverted from Gove lying about contacting Uk firms for ppe.

Just a precaution am isolating from my partner as she is due in July. Over the last few days I have had a dry not so continuous cough. Wheezing today and now starting to ache a bit. Thankfully no temperature but think it’s for the best just now. My neighbour currently has COVID we spoke last week but kept social distancing.

It'll be a good while before we know how Sweden's "different" approach compares to everyone else's, but that doesn't strike me as a good idea.

The FT reckons the UK death toll is actually about 41000.

    That sounds very plausible.

I was speaking to a neighbour yesterday who works at an NHS care home in Edinburgh and she said 35 of the 40 patients have tested positive.

The nurses haven’t been tested unless they show symptoms.

You can imagine how this is being replicated across the country.

If it is 41,000 then on a mortality rate of 0.4% that would mean 10m have been infected. At 0.1% then 41m.

    Who knows 😳.

Given how those in charge are massaging the truth across all other aspects of this crisis you can only assume the figures they give are fixed in some way. Ft's numbers look horrendous.

Immunologist from Imperial College was on BBC breakfast this morning. They are developing a vaccine separately from the one being trialled tomorrow, and expect to be ready to begin human trials in June. While stressing there are no guarantees, he thinks there is a good chance of success and if it passes the trial process then it could be ready before the end of the year in this country. However, it wouldn't be available globally until well into 2021 due to the magnitude necessary for worldwide manufacture and distribution. But other countries are obviously developing their own vaccines at the same time.

He also said the virus seems to be remaining stable which is good news for those involved in trying to find a vaccine.

George Osborne just on the radio there saying we will need ten years at least of austerity to pay for this crisis.

No worries, we'll all be in it together, just like the last ten years when the rich tripled their wealth and all the aristocracy in this country managed to get richer by the minute.

I can't link to it for some reason but there is an interesting study from Australia which suggests that it may be possible to locate community outbreaks of Coronavirus from untreated wastewater.

They have sampled from 2 sites and found the virus present at both. The virus is shed when people go to the toilet and the viral load they are calculating is consistent with the numbers the local public health authority have as confirmed cases (allowing for a margin of error of course). It's certainly seems an interesting angle for tracking and tracing future localised outbreaks.

It would also suggest public toilets should be avoided.

I think that is exactly it. Unlike Scotland they have made no effort at all to consider the community or care home deaths into the official figures. They should be asked the next time they mention being passed the peak whether that is the peak of hospital deaths or all deaths due to the virus. Get the impression there are loads in the community as well as care homes.

Does anyone know if there's a realistic possibility that Covid was reasonably widespread in Scotland before the first positive case on 1 March? Just been reading this New York Times article and the symptoms it describes are remarkably consistent with an illness my dad had mid February.

My friend is a nurse and she swears she had it end of Jan/beg Feb. She went on a cruise at the tail end of it too.

Over 1600 deaths announced in Scotland that were linked to Covid-19.

Awaiting the daily number from Nicola Sturgeon on hospital deaths.

My son (23) was bed ridden for over a week from 4th Feb. Fever, muscle aches, coughing. Took about 2 weeks further to fully clear. I’ve only ever seen that type of “being ill” with someone having the flu.

My wife had a mild “cold” about 2 weeks before this. She is a teacher at a nursery school. I’ve had a sore throat but nothing worse.

    Who knows.

Someone I know is a bit of a figure of fun among a group of my friends because she is a total drama queen. She was hospitalised in late December and was all over social media with it. 'Worst flu ever' and 'the doctors just don' t knwo what is wrong with me'was her constant cry. At the time we all dismissed it with if she was that ill she wouldn't be on her phone.

Reading that does make you think.

Is the number of new cases an increase on yesterday?

IMO this has been doing the rounds for a significant time before confirmed cases. I will bet a fair few folk who maybe had a mild dose put it down do just being not well since turn of year. If somebody in a home or already ill in hospital caught it then there is a chance this was missed for a few deaths early doors perhaps. When we were in Vegas in November my wife was very ill for a couple of the nights coughing and fever but as quickly as came it went and I never got ill, she says it was totally bizarre. Of course not suggesting it was that but no doubt this was taken as something else by some early on.

Yes 366 new cases since yesterday's update. Yesterday's number of new cases was about 260 I think.

EDIT - Sorry that was Monday, yesterday was 222.
