Part of the problem is the public continues to buy the myth that politicians are overpaid. MPs are underpaid, in terms of their basic wage, for the responsibilities they have. Capable people can make far more in other lines of work with a fraction of the scrutiny. It's the proverbial no brainer.

That leaves us with a handful of genuinely committed individuals surrounded by careerists and those who have enough money from other sources to sustain them whilst they implement a system that protects their wealth.
What you're describing there is a kleptocracy.

Some disagreement on the benefit of school closures. I suppose that highlights one of the 'problems' of being led by experts. Different experts have different views.

I read somewhere else that children do not spread the virus as easily as adults, as well as not getting it as easily and suffering very little symptoms.

In what way? The majority of the UK voted for their MP knowing who was in charge and who would be leading the country. Going off course obviously now also so.
The 'landslide victory' that Johnson won was a parliamentary majority, not a majority of the UK voters. 43 per cent of the country voted for the party he leads. Other voting systems are available (which a majority of voters don't yet seem to want).

One of the theories used in the herd immunity argument was that letting kids circulate was the best way of spreading the virus.

In saying that, a few weeks ago the French authorities were saying that masks were of no use whatsoever for the general public, but now it looks like they're about to become compulsory.

    It's all getting very confusing.

It is getting confusing but I do think that common sense prevails in the current situation and to looks after yourself and family and loved ones as best as you can is all any of us can do.

On BBC Radio Scotland a Doctor was on this morning and he said if Boris does recover we are looking at weeks until he would potentially be able to return to work. The likelihood is he will not be leading the country when this virus is at its worst.

Is it time for a Government of national unity? Keir Starmer seems a competent politician and is someone I personally would like to see be involved in the Government's fight against the virus.

Not really a great choice in a crisis that depends on the Health Service. Not sure he is that respected by employees in that sector.

Sensible suggestion. Not a chance of it happening.

We still need an opposition asking constructive questions and pushing the Government as needed, even more so now. That doesn’t mean the usual knockabout politics of course. So far it looks it looks like the opposition are getting the balance just about right and supporting the Goverment as required.

Anyone seen the Home Secretary in the last month? Priti Patel. Key cabinet role but clearly completely distrusted with any kind of public messaging.

Shows up the depth of quality in the govt. Full of people who cannot connect or display trust, empathy and leadership.

Johnson isn’t going to be PM after this, no matter what.

So we’re left with a pick n mix selection that involves Hancock, Patel, Gove, Rees-Mogg, Raab, Truss, Sharma, Jenrick, Williamson etc etc.

I suppose Sunak could be a contender but only just in the job.

    What a mess.

Patel issued a statement a couple of days ago pledging to prosecute anybody found guilty of domestic abuse during lockdown. I don’t think she appeared in person though, looks like she is being kept out of sight.

Gove says Johnson's not on a ventilator. So at least we know for certain that he's either not on a ventilator, or on a ventilator.

If you hold a govt of national unity then who holds the govt to account?

Very true. I’m not saying he’s not a contemptible prick with a woeful track record but he’s been consistently saying the right things about Coronavirus while Johnson and Hancock have been all over the place.

Hancock strikes me as one of the least able people ever to reach such a lofty cabinet post.

I think in some ways this has come at a convenient time for her, following the bullying allegations that were stacking up against her just a couple of weeks before the virus took over.

Plenty time on my hands just now and I rarely ever see GMTV. However, it has occurred to me that Piers Morgan and his cohorts are the most abusive and bile people I have ever witnessed on UK television. He exists for the sole purpose of creating arguments. Its not a debate. Its a rant. The man is tripe. His 'show' is tripe. Wish he'd just go somewhere and never come back.

If there is any opposition to the Govts performance at the moment none of the news outlets are covering it.

"Boris" (no surname necessary) is the perfect man for the job according to the TV this morning who are all but canonising him. ("Everyone in the country is praying for him" )

I've yet to hear any concrete criticism being followed through. Hancock made a mess of assessing the problem and for its preparation but the lack of examination of his performance and the constant footage of him miming that "ramping up" thing with his hands means hes "popular". He should be out of a job given his (in)actions in Jan-Feb.

Cant see anything wrong with widening the pool of MPs available for public duties, although as I said it wont happen. We'll end up with Gove as PM and stagger from piller to post.

Saw something on TV about people who were deemed “high risk”, never received letters
I know of quite a few family members, and my mums neighbours who should possibly have received them, but never got one
Anyone in the same boat, or does anyone know someone, who got a letter?

Were the letters not an England only policy?

Edit - Just checked and it's UK wide but administered by the respective governments.

I actually thought he had died when I heard the way that twat Morgan was droning on about things this morning. It's all very OTT. Yes, he's ill. So are lots of others.

There are more Etonians ready to fill the gap while he recovers.

    I've edited my post.

Seems it is a UK wide initiative but enacted by each of the respective governments.

I’m not his biggest fan but he has raised a lot of valid points during this crisis.. I also liked the gesture he made to the nurses regarding parking fines.. I’m a mixed bag about him in general.

I posted earlier in the thread that I have a friend that lives in Rome. She is a key worker so has still been working throughout.

She posted a couple of pictures on Instagram today of Battistini metro station and it was rammed, she said it has been getting gradually busier for a few days now as are the streets. The 1st week of the lockdown she had a whole carriage to herself, today she said she couldn't even count how many were on board as it was so busy. Also posted pictures of a perfume shop that had opened and people queuing to get in. She seems to think the lockdown is about to break in Rome as people are blatantly flouting it and the Police are struggling to/not even trying to control things.

Given things seem to be slowly improving in Italy it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
