There needs to be a massive change in the UK and Scottish govt outlook. The lockdown can only last so long so they need to be putting in place now a testing regime for when we come out of lockdown. The public need to feel confident that there is a plan in place for us to get back to normal life.
There are problems building up, not least in the fact that money is just not getting to people quick enough. There are going to be some major companies collapsing very shortly as well and the govt will need to decide what it wants to do about that.
Just now all we are getting is daily updates on new cases but indication from the govts that they have a plan in place that isn’t us all just staying home forever.

The testing regime appears to be slowly getting up to speed.

You have to say though that it appears there was zero contingency planning here..even when the likes of Italy were starting to suffer there is no indication that the authorities here were putting testing capacity in place.

There are doing so now but the delay has been costly in many ways.

But as you say a lockdown exit strategy needs to be worked on and rapidly. Two more weeks then maybe another 2-3 is about all that can be tolerated, government help or not.

The exit strategy has to be based on massive testing capability both for infections and antibodies. That aligned to focussed track n trace policies combined with shielding of vulnerable groups should allow some sort of normality to resume. Add in the semi permanent rise in ICU / ventilators that should finally be in place and we can start to look forward.

Sadly though this will take a good while to implement. Not least because it appears that no one had any real plan for an outbreak. The response is being made up on the hoof, scrambling around to react to events rather than putting in place a pre prepared response plan.

Sure plenty of 20:20 hindsight in some of the above but none the less there does seem to have been a rather glaring lack of preparedness, even when the writing was on the Italian wall.
Totally agree and it appears both govts equally to blame. Scottish govt has to accept its share of the blame here. They are responsible for health in Scotland and following the UK policy so closely has proved mistaken to say the least. The lack of testing has been a disgrace, as well as the lack of ppe for nhs staff. What on earth were they doing all February when this was going mad in China?

This is a wee bit different.

Let's hope it has an effect.

Would it be possible to start loosening the lockdown gradually with households only released after testing negative for the virus and individuals who've developed antibodies after recovering. That would make most sense to me but is it logistically possible?

    Yes, roughly.

We're approximately 16 days behind in the number of deaths (1016 deaths on 12th March in Italy) and 15 days behind in the number of cases (17660 cases on 13th March in Italy).

That's a massive jump in deaths today. The next two weeks are going to be crucial.

That was a great report. Hopefully we really start ramping up the support for the nhs now. A proper testing set up will be a lot cheaper than us all sitting in the house not working.

Looks like they’re reporting only 2546 new infections today though.

That’s either because they’re testing less people or (hopefully) the lockdown is beginning to have an effect. It’s more likely it’s just an anomaly though and it will jump up again tomorrow.

Don't think enough days have passed yet for the lockdown to have had any effect on numbers.

That's broadly comparable with the number of daily infections in Italy around 15 or 16 days ago so unfortunately I wouldn't read too much into that at the moment.

At Hill of Tarvit in Fife today there were runners and walkers dimantling a road block so they could park their cars and access the site.

I'm sure the majority are trying their best to abide by the rules but a selfish, moronic minority are going to get us all completely confined to our houses with minimal exceptions.

This is quite an interesting piece on how different the whole 'lockdown' experience would have been only 15 years ago.

There is a cruise ship with 4 dead and many more with symptoms hoping to make it to Fort Lauderdale. It must be hell for those on board who have been trapped since Puerto Arenas in Chile. Chile refused them to dock at the originally intended destination and they might be refused entry to the Panama Canal. If they get through the canal they are likely to dock in Fort Lauderdale although many locals are complaining it will flood hospital beds at a time when cases are exponential here. Some think the ship should return to where it is registered and pays taxes.

We should let them dock for humanitarian reasons but impose quarantine and test everyone for the virus. Feed them on board or empty a massive hotel and lock them in it till they are clear. Bill Carnival Corp for the resources and services supplied.

Thousands of New yorkers have driven down to Florida to escape the carnage. Trump is going to impose a quarantine on NY, but I fear that may be too late for Floridians.

Why would a ship be refused entry in to a canal?
And why are so many other countries employing teams of hazmat-clad workers to disinfect roads and pavements? Is there something about the infectivity of this virus that we in the UK are not being told (perhaps in continuing pursuit of a 'herd immunity'/culling policy, despite official denials)?

Agreed. You should see the amount of kids milling around the local shop here today. Parents should be strung up.

Heartbreaking real life stories out there. Hopefully someone will make a decision that will aid them. God bless them and everyone else that's in similar horrific situations.

It makes my blood boil hearing tales of complete and utter idiots still carrying on as if the virus didn't exist.
