We can't build them in days because we would have to ship the modular units, that would enable such a programme, from China and we don't have the labour force that they do.
Like it or not prefabricated offsite construction is the future of building and the Chinese are far ahead of the game in manufacturing for that.

I'm perfectly prepared to admit that I have absolutely no knowledge of the specifics of what you've posted about. What would be involved (in terms of steps and timescale) in the UK becoming capable of building these units?

On a related note, as you seem to have some expertise, what is your opinion of Chinese construction practices more generally, in comparison to UK practices?

Trump declares a national emergency in the USA. His handling of this has been shocking. It wasn’t too long ago he was saying that the virus will “go away”. It’s now in 46 states...If the US economy goes the way of the Chinese one it will be a very rough few months

I dont knowvmuch about their methodology but I've worked on jobs where similar modular systems to those used for their hospitals were used and they are a good system.

Schools all closing over here now until after Easter at least. Only parents with jobs that are listed as necessary for the upkeep of society will be offered child care places.

Are folk still claiming that "it's just like the flu" or sentiments to that effect?

From what ive read and seen on TV the symptoms vary greatly case to case. Some.people are pretty symptom free, some have a mild cold and others end up on a ventilator or worse. Seems to be your luck and state of health really .
My son said to me today to remember more people have lost their jobs to this virus than have died . We need to keep perspective

I didn't really mean the symptoms. I was more refering to the blasé attitude and cavalier approach some seemed to be exhibiting. Even today I read posts saying something about a global madness and that you're more likely to die from... something trivial or other.

I don't know how many people are living with cancer in this country, certainly several hundred thousand or even more, and they are all vulnerable, regardless of their age.

Loads of other older folk would justifiably have been expecting to live for a few more years, but are now facing an imminent threat.

Yet we read people saying that it's ok because it's "only older people or those with underlying illnesses" who are dying.

My mate is only 66 and has a cancer which is being managed brilliantly. He's not expecting to die anytime soo, but now I'm worried about him.

My father in law is living with cancer and, as a result of the cancer medication, he has developed heart failure. Again, he's been managed brilliantly to the extent that he's been looking at moving house. I expect he's terrified now.

So, when someone callously says, " Every year flu kills loads of folk too", it boils my blood.

    Quite frankly, I'm frightened.

And re herd immunity - I've not really heard of this being discussed as appropriate anywhere. As far as I was aware we weren't doing that - the plan was initially to contain and now we're going for delay, so the health service can cope with the steady stream of cases needing admitted as the months go by. If the harm from the current pandemic can be minimised and a vaccine found soon (which it should) then by next year it should generally be ok. I've not seen talk of allowing herd immunity anywhere - something that would be ******g insanity with a disease with as high a mortality rate as this one (and totally unknown long-term effects, such as possible chronic lung damage.)
Herd immunity and the government's policy of allowing healthy people - not too many, not too few - to become infected was discussed on R4 Any Questions tonight, shortly after you posted.

Youll always get people like that. My friend refuses for her and her family to have flu jags every year as she believes they are no good for you. About 3 years ago they all spent the whole of xmas really ill with flu but she still wont take the jag.
Ive said it in a few posts over the last few days its bull headed people im scared of. People who carry on because they believe they will only have mild symptoms and never give a thought for those they will pass it on to

I'm not wanting to drag this out...ok, that's maybe a lie as it's Friday night with no football on the TV so what else am I going to do?!?

I don't understand how it's two separate issues and I don't understand how a nation's previous poor construction record is irrelevant to whether we should be inspired by their recent building of hospitals.

To draw a line under this however, I guess it's a matter of opinion whether or not you find the construction of the hospitals in question to be inspiring and something the UK would be incapable of. I know Chinese construction kills people though, so my opinion is that it's not inspiring.
Chinese construction. The front of a hotel collapsed.

UK construction. A tower block goes up in flames.

I don't think we have any right to be critical of another country.

    Exactly.

I do buy a flu jab because it's a horrible illness although I've never really considered that it could be fatal. I suppose I still think I'm too young for that outcome.

However, I'm always told that it protects against maybe 4 or 5? strains of flu, but it might reduce the symptoms if I caught a different type.

I wonder if that applies to Covid 19.

Probably not, but I can live in hope.

    Isolation buying, anybody?
I'm getting up early doors tomorrow to do just that.
I don't want to but the panic buying has started locally in my area.

I get the flu jab, not for me really but more so I don't get it and pass it to my wife who has no immune system to speak of.

A week or so ago, I started writing a thread entitled "Can you blame the panic buyers".

My argument was that it was entirely understandable and made sense. I decided against posting it because I could imagine the insults and aggression that would be coming my way. You only need to look at the "Not going tomorrow" thread to see a few Drama Queen jibes etc and my thread was going to be posted a week or so ago so it would have been worse.

However, I don't blame anyone for preparing for isolation. If I can find any dried pasta, I'll be buying some and I usually only use fresh.

Deliveroo and Just Eat are all very well, but they're gig economy jobs and if the workers are sick, they don't get paid so can they be trusted not to infect you?

On another note, I see Just Eat have introduced contactless payments so you can just ask them to leave it at your door and ring the bell.

If I use them I'll unpack and wash my hands before eating though.

I haven't panicked bought but I'd say I've been pretty strategic, was always of the opinion if **** hit the fan I could live for a couple of weeks from the contents of my freezer and cupboard as it was, but I have bought a few things to make sure they are full, so it's pretty much been a normal weekly shop for me but I've bought different things this time

Great post and describes basically where I'm at from the beginning of this outbreak. I can understand black humour and even people in denial, but the callous opinion that it's somehow ok because it's only the sick and elderly that will die really does grip my ****.

Was in Tesco at 7am this morning, we always keep a healthy stock of things in the house anyway including toilet rolls so no mass buying from me, just topping up like I always do.

    Was in Morrison’s tonight....what a war zone!!

As the news has deteriorated I’ve been stocking the cupboards and the freezer over the last couple of weeks. Rather than silly to do so I think, looking at the situation today, it would be silly not to.

Call it panic buying if you want but if I don’t buy it someone else will. Anyway I’m pretty prepared I think so no panic here.

Also if I have too much then I can help out friends and family if needed, otherwise it can go to a food bank if things don’t pan out as grim as some of the forecasts are suggesting.

Or even worse companies that are in a strong position to survive the crisis and are relishing the fact that some of their competitors might not come through this. I know it's a fact of life that the strongest will prevail, but I'd kind of hoped that humans might stand together rather than be eager to pick the carcasses of the weak.

    That's actually heartened me.

My vision of isolation was being stuck in the house, mostly in my bedroom, alone, ill and bored.

Your video has reminded me that I could use my garden and even go for a walk in the common, assuming that I was up to it.

    Thanks.
